My husband always wanted to go boat fishing with his father-in-law,
so this time, we headed to Jeju's Chagwido Dalae Boat Fishing experience.
You could certainly just go for a boat fishing trip,
but we opted for **a course that included dolphin watching**.
It was a truly, truly special experience, but
we **didn't take motion sickness medication beforehand**, and we suffered quite a bit...
Especially if you're thinking of trying boat fishing this summer,
even for someone like me, who rarely gets seasick, it wasn't easy at all,
so **motion sickness medication is an absolute must**!
Since this was a trip I paid for myself,
I'm sharing **my honest review of the Chagwido boat fishing experience**.

We discovered Chagwido Dalae Boat Fishing through the Jeju Tour Pass,
While Dolphin Boat Fishing typically costs ~$19,
we were able to book it for **~$14 per person with the Jeju Tour Pass**.

Depending on the time slot, there's **Daytime Boat Fishing and Sunset Boat Fishing**,
and you can choose whether to just do boat fishing or **go to see dolphins as well**.
For reference, boat fishing takes 1 hour and 30 minutes, while dolphin boat fishing takes 2 hours.
**However**, if you go out to see dolphins like we did,
the actual boat fishing time gets shorter than you might expect,
so if you **want boat fishing to be the main activity**, I recommend the regular boat fishing.
The easiest way to book is via Naver : )
Due to our schedule, we booked the boat fishing for 12:30 PM,
but **I really don't recommend the 12:30 PM slot in summer**...
I highly recommend doing the **sunset boat fishing or going in the morning** if possible!
The heat can make motion sickness worse, as it did for me.
You need to arrive at the Dalae Boat Fishing office 30 minutes before your reservation,
because you have to fill out a boarding form and also **purchase any necessary supplies**.
There are no pharmacies nearby, so you should **bring motion sickness medication in advance**.

Motion sickness medication, arm sleeves or a thin outer layer (to prevent sunburn), a hat (one that won't blow off easily), sunscreen

Wet wipes, bottled water, cotton gloves, squid bait, etc.
When I went, the **total number of passengers was about 15**!
There were families traveling with children, and also a group of Chinese tourists.
The boat was small, but it had a central deck area where you could sit,
and there was even a spot where you could lie down if you weren't feeling well.
Before our boat fishing adventure, we first set out to spot some dolphins!
It seems the order of activities depends on the weather conditions,
and on this particular day, the swells were quite strong, so we decided to do the boat fishing later.
We ventured about 40 minutes out into the sea, reaching the vicinity of Songaksan Mountain, and that's when
we finally spotted a pod of dolphins for the very first time!
I even learned for the first time that those white splashes breaking like waves near the coastline
were actually dolphins! Who knew?
On the way back, we kept spotting dolphins,
and we were lucky enough to see dolphins even while boat fishing,
which makes it a truly memorable and joyful experience! : )
Our captain was fantastic, pointing out the dolphins as soon as they appeared,
and every time we spotted a pod, everyone, adults and children alike,
would exclaim "Wow!" in delightful surprise. It was just so heartwarming and fun to witness.
Our boat fishing adventure kicked off once we returned to the vicinity of Chagwido Island.
It took a little while to find a spot with calmer waves,
so we ended up fishing for about 30 minutes in total.
For the basic bait, they provide shrimp,
and our captain personally demonstrated how to properly attach it to the hook.
However, as total novices, we found it quite tricky to attach the bait to the fishing hook.
If only we had known, we would've bought some squid bait from the snack bar!
Apparently, squid bait is not only easier to attach but also known for catching bigger fish.
Despite our struggles, some of the other folks on the boat
were reeling in several fish each, even with the shrimp bait!
And guess what? My husband managed to catch one too, even if it was a little guy!
While my husband and dad thoroughly enjoyed the boat fishing,
my sibling and I, unfortunately,
ended up suffering from severe seasickness and had to lie down.
If you're someone who tends to get easily tired or prone to motion sickness,
you might want to reconsider the 2-hour dolphin boat fishing trip.
Personally, this Jeju Island boat fishing experience was
a truly memorable and enjoyable experience.
However, it's crucial to not be overly ambitious and choose a course that genuinely suits your preferences and endurance
to fully enjoy the adventure, in my opinion.
Specifically, while there's only a 30-minute difference between regular boat fishing and the dolphin-watching boat fishing experience,
if you get seasick, that seemingly small 30-minute difference can feel like 3 hours,
so I highly recommend that first-time boat fishers think carefully before making their choice.
And if you typically don't get seasick and skip taking motion sickness medication,
you might end up suffering unnecessarily, just like I did.
So, definitely pack that motion sickness medication!

The Dolphin Fishing course, originally ~$19, can be booked for ~$14 per person when using the Jeju Tour Pass. You can enjoy the experience at a discounted price when booking with the Jeju Tour Pass.
There are no pharmacies near the boat fishing office, so you must bring motion sickness medication in advance. Even those who don't usually get seasick may experience severe motion sickness during the 12:30 PM slot in summer, so it is highly recommended to prepare it.
The Dolphin Fishing course takes a total of 2 hours. However, if you go out to see dolphins, the actual fishing time may be shorter, so if boat fishing is your main purpose, it is advisable to consider the regular boat fishing course.
