If you're planning a trip to Jeju Island soon, I've got a fantastic restaurant recommendation for you! While I'd heard whispers of a cozy spot that captures the authentic vibe of a local Japanese eatery, it was actually a strong recommendation from a senior colleague that convinced me to visit. This is 'Manji Restaurant,' nestled in Gonae-ri, Aewol. It's famous for its long queues, so I made sure to arrive right at opening time to beat the rush.

How to Dine at Manji Restaurant
1. Regardless of empty seats, enter your information and make a reservation using the Catchtable system outside.
2. Enter after receiving an entry notification.
3. Show your notification and pre-pay.
4. Cooking begins after payment.
This is Manji Restaurant, often called a 'hidden gem' in Jeju.
It's a very small operation here. It looks like a residential house, but it's actually a Japanese restaurant!
Manji Restaurant operates only between 11 AM - 3 PM and 5 PM - 8 PM.
Plus, they're closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays...
The only downside is that due to its small interior, wait times can get drastically long if your timing isn't perfect. I highly recommend registering in advance via Catchtable or using their remote queuing system before you even leave. An "open run" (arriving right at opening) to avoid peak hours is your best bet! Also, be aware that they close early if ingredients run out, so it's essential to check before planning a late dinner visit.
This spot was originally a traditional "jeomppang" (a small, old-fashioned store) along the old pebble path in Gonae-ri, Aewol-eup, right on the Olle Trail Course 16. What's even more impressive is that the owners personally renovated everything themselves, except for areas requiring specialized expertise.
Inside, you'll find just one 4-person table and three 2-person tables.
Depending on the situation, you might need to enter in groups or sit separately.
This creates a wonderfully cozy and warm atmosphere, much like a tiny, authentic late-night diner in Japan. It's a fantastic spot to focus quietly on your meal, making it perfect for a date! (Due to space constraints, I don't recommend it for groups of 4 or more.)
You can expect to spend around ~$10-~$14 per person.
We ordered the signature Tonkatsu Set and Yakisoba.
Each of us got a Tonkatsu Set, and we shared the Yakisoba among four people.
Here's a secret: this is a *tonkatsu* paradise!
The pork isn't dry at all; it's incredibly tender and juicy. The crispy breading perfectly balances the meat, allowing us to savor every last, flavorful bite. My mouth is watering just thinking about it again! Considering the price, it was a truly satisfying and delicious meal. All my friends who joined me were equally impressed!
As for the yakisoba, the sausage itself is quite salty, and the sauce is rich, so it might be a bit much to eat a whole plate by yourself. Since I visited with four people and we shared it with other dishes, it was perfectly enjoyable.
The savory-sweet sauce coats the noodles beautifully. The generous amount of crunchy cabbage and the soft noodles create a wonderful textural harmony. The yakisoba's sweet and salty charm perfectly complements the potentially rich flavor of the tonkatsu.
I wouldn't recommend ordering it as a single dish if you're dining alone; it's definitely best ordered for sharing.
