Hello, I'm Lisa, your travel blogger!
If you're heading on a Western USA trip,
In-N-Out Burger, which you can only truly enjoy on the West Coast,
is an absolute must-visit!!
I visited it during my San Francisco trip.
Along with information about hidden menu items not on the official menu,
ordering tips, and my #PaidMyOwnWay review,
I'll share it all here!
1. San Francisco In-N-Out Location

☑️Days Off Open Year-Round

In-N-Out Burger is
a San Francisco must-try, located right in front of Fisherman's Wharf.
If you've come to the American West,
the In-N-Out you can only enjoy here
is an absolute must-have!!

Since it's right in front of Fisherman's Wharf,
its excellent accessibility means you're bound to pass by it during your trip.
Plus, it's one of the few spots open until the early hours,
making it absolutely perfect for a late-night snack.
2. In-N-Out Burger Atmosphere

Being the only In-N-Out location in San Francisco,
it's definitely a bustling spot.
Not only locals but also tons of tourists visit.
That means both the indoor and outdoor tables
are always packed with customers.

If you're with companions,
it's a good idea to grab a table first.
Even though I visited on a weekday afternoon,
the ordering line was quite long.
However, the turnover rate is quite fast, so
I was able to get a seat right away without waiting,
and my order was taken after only about a 10-minute wait!
3. In-N-Out Menu Recommendations & Hidden Gems!

The menu is wonderfully simple!
There are 3 official burger types,
plus 2 unofficial hidden menu items.
Menu | USD | Estimated USD |
Double-Double | 7.1 | ~$7 |
Cheeseburger | 5.15 | ~$5 |
Hamburger | 4.65 | ~$4 |
Fries | 3.05 | ~$3 |
Drinks | 2.6 ~ | ~$2 |
Shake | 3.4 | ~$3 |
✅ Additional 8.625% tax is separate
You can also upgrade to a set menu!
The price is the same whether you order à la carte or as a set;
however, the set includes a medium-sized drink,
while à la carte allows you to order a small size!

Drinks come with free refills
Since you get your drink directly from the dispenser,
if you go for the burger + fries + small drink combo,
it ends up being a little cheaper.
While the menu is pretty simple,
something fantastic to try out here
are In-N-Out's hidden menu items:
✅ Protein Style and ✅ Animal Style.
I'll show you how to order them below!
4. How to Order In-N-Out's Hidden Menu
Recently, on the 'I Live Alone LA Episode',
when BTS's J-Hope was seen eating In-N-Out,
many of you probably became curious about In-N-Out's Animal Style.
Why, you ask?
Because it's not on the regular menu!
You can simply tell the staff directly what you want.

📌 How to Order
1️⃣ First, choose your burger type.
Whether it's a Double-Double or a cheeseburger,
pick whatever fillings you'd like.
2️⃣ Then, choose your style.
Protein Style: Lettuce wraps the burger instead of a bun.
Animal Style: Comes with grilled onions and a special sauce.
📌 What to Say When Ordering
Can I get 1 Protein Style Double-Double?
You can choose your burger and style together like this.
🌟 Additional charge for style change: None.

They also have Animal Style Fries, topped with onion sauce,
so if you're a fan of things like garlic fries,
you might want to give them a try!
⚠️ Animal Style Fries do have an additional charge.
4. San Francisco Must-Try: In-N-Out Review

I ordered three different menu items.
✅ Basic Cheeseburger Combo
✅ Cheeseburger Protein Style
✅ Cheeseburger Animal Style
With an additional drink,
the total came out to $26.07 including tax.

🌟 Pro tip: when you order,
if you ask for an In-N-Out hat, they'll give you one.
They also have Sudoku puzzles..
and even stickers for your luggage!
Just ask when you order, and they'll give you everything.

It took about
10-15 minutes for the food to come out after ordering.
And the visual appeal, as expected, was fantastic.
Totally a handmade burger vibe!
I started by trying the basic cheeseburger.
Honestly, the flavor profile was pretty standard,
nothing too unique, but the juicy patty
and chewy bun made it taste even better.
The size wasn't huge,
so next time I visit, I decided I'll definitely go for the Double-Double,
which has two patties.

I also tried the Animal Style burger.
With that savory onion sauce
added to this menu item,
it was definitely a much juicier experience.
My friend actually said the Animal Style
was the most delicious!!
I totally understood why J-Hope ordered it.

Finally, the one I enjoyed the most was
the Protein Style!!
Since it's wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun,
it seemed perfect for those watching their diet.
Even without the bun, the combination of the patty and lettuce
was surprisingly delicious.
Amongst all the rich and heavy American foods,
it felt like a light, refreshing option,
almost like a salad, if you will?
If you enjoy salads,
you might really like trying the Protein Style.
I even had it again when I went to LA!
5. Any In-N-Out Tips?

American restaurants always expect tips.
So, you'll need to factor in tips separately
from the menu prices.
Typically, 15 - 20%
At In-N-Out, you don't need to leave a tip.
It's a system where we order ourselves
and pick up our food, without table service!
6. Wrapping Up

In-N-Out Burger in the US
is an absolute must-do on a West Coast trip!
That's because you can't taste it anywhere else!
While they have their classic menu items,
be sure to try their hidden menu options, like Protein Style or Animal Style :)
I hope this post has been a great help
for your US travel preparations,
and if you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment!
