Getting to Hooker Valley & Parking Tips
Why You Should Leave Early in the Morning

Securing a parking spot at Hooker Valley is key!
I stayed the night before in Pukaki, the closest town.
If you're curious about my review of the free Pukaki campsite,
check out the post below.
Getting There

The road winds up along the western side of Lake Pukaki,
with the lake constantly unfolding on your right.
The drive itself is incredibly scenic and therapeutic.
There are lookout points along the way,
but since securing a parking spot was our priority,
we drove straight through without stopping.
As you follow the road,
you'll reach a fork for Tasman Valley and Hooker Valley.
For Hooker Valley, you'll need to take the second turn to the right.
Most people head towards Hooker Valley, so
just follow your navigation, and you'll be fine.
Parking Options

Just before the right turn, you'll see an electronic sign
indicating available parking spots.
Many people park along the roadside, so
even if it seems full, don't worry too much.

Free Parking
If you want to park for free,
you can park tightly along the bottlenecked road just before entering the main car park.
While it's free,
it adds about a 30-minute walk to the start of the trekking course.

Paid Parking
If you prefer paid parking, drive further in
to the designated campervan parking area.
Just like other paid parking areas,
you'll need to pay the fee beforehand.
The fee is 5 NZD per hour, with a maximum of 25 NZD per day.

Next to the parking payment machine building, you'll find a restaurant and restrooms.
There are no restrooms along the trekking course,
so make sure to use them before you set off!
The Trekking Course & Estimated Time
Choosing Your Course

Using the restroom building as a reference, Hooker Valley is to the right,
and the Mueller Hut Route is to the left.
To reach Hooker Valley, head right.
Estimated Time
Round Trip

✔ To just before the Second Suspension Bridge: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes
(Currently, the 2nd bridge is under construction – expected to open late June 2026)
✔ Round trip to the Third Suspension Bridge: approximately 3 hours
(It's mostly flat, so it's not as difficult as you might think.)

As of June 2026, the Second Suspension Bridge is undergoing maintenance.
Unfortunately, you can only trek up to just before the Second Suspension Bridge.
If you visit after the construction is complete, be sure to go all the way to the Third Suspension Bridge.
Given the nature of New Zealand's administrative processes,
there's a high chance of construction delays,
so checking beforehand is essential.
Mueller Hut Route

Recently, many people are also heading towards the Mueller Hut route.
It's a route where you can visit Kea Point,
and it's popular as an alternative course during the 2nd bridge's construction period.
Suspension Bridges & Photo Zones

If you pack snacks like chocolate bars, water, and fruit,
enjoying your snacks with the vibrant popsicle-blue lake, snow-capped mountains, and a clear blue sky as your backdrop
feels truly Michelin-starred.
The sun can be quite strong, so a hat or sunglasses are essential.
Mueller Lake Viewpoint Just Before the First Suspension Bridge

The vibrant popsicle-blue Mueller Lake, formed by melting glaciers,
and the snow-capped peak of Mount Sefton
are captured perfectly in one frame.
It's a place where you can truly feel the mystery of grand nature,
so I couldn't help but take out my camera.
Rocky Section After Crossing the First Bridge

After crossing the first suspension bridge,
you'll find a rocky section,
which is a popular spot for everyone to take photos with Mount Sefton in the background.
Viewpoint Just Before the Second Suspension Bridge

From a different angle than the Mueller Lake Viewpoint,
this section offers a wider view of the lake.
Unfortunately, from the second bridge onwards, it was under construction,
so we couldn't cross.
However, the view from this viewpoint alone was completely satisfying.
🔺Queenstown Shopping Recommendations
Regarding Suspension Bridge Safety

The suspension bridge has a warning limit for a maximum of 20 people,
but you'll often find that people don't really stick to it on site.
It's best to take your time and cross leisurely.
Weather Pro Tip

The weather around Mount Cook changes by the minute!
Even if it's cloudy when you start your trek,
you'll often find the clouds lifting beautifully.
So, even if the weather seems a bit disappointing, it's always worth giving it a go.
This trekking course is simply too magnificent
to abandon just because of the weather.
Honest Review: Local Cafe
The Old Mountaineers Cafe

There aren't many restaurants around here,
so options are pretty limited.

The coffee is perfectly fine for a pick-me-up.
And the Mount Cook view from the window is truly stunning!
But, to be honest, the pizza was a bit disappointing.
The burgers, on the other hand, seemed to satisfy Western visitors more.

As expected for a tourist spot, the prices are on the expensive side.
If you urgently need to use a clean restroom
or just want to enjoy a cup of coffee with that Mount Cook view,
you'll be set!

The Hooker Valley Trek is mostly flat,
so it's not as physically demanding as you might think.
However, if you visit after the construction on Bridge #2 is complete,
I highly recommend you make it all the way to Bridge #3!
