Hi everyone, I'm Lisa, your travel blogger!
If you're planning a trip to Auckland, New Zealand,
you've probably considered day trips to nearby areas.
Especially if you want to truly experience
the natural beauty of New Zealand's North Island,
I highly recommend Cathedral Cove on the Coromandel Peninsula,
which even appeared in 'The Chronicles of Narnia' film!
With its breathtaking emerald waters and
majestic natural arch right before your eyes, it's a truly impressive spot
and a popular choice for New Zealand honeymoons
or independent travel itineraries.

In fact, my husband and I loved it so much on our first visit
that I decided to come back again,
this time with my parents!
Today, I'll break down how to get to Cathedral Cove
(water taxi, shuttle bus, kayak, boat tour),
and share my personal experience of getting there by "shuttle bus + walking"!
It's also a fantastic day trip option
if you have a rental car,
so keep this in mind when planning your
Auckland area adventure!
1. Recommended Day Trip from Auckland, New Zealand
cathedral cove

Cathedral Cove is
a secluded beach boasting spectacular scenery,
located on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island.
This enchanting place, with its captivating
arched cave formed by white limestone cliffs,
earned its name "cathedral cove"
because its appearance resembles a cathedral.
📌 Cathedral Cove's Charms
1️⃣ Filming Location for 'The Chronicles of Narnia'
As a location featured in 'The Chronicles of Narnia,'
its mystical and dreamy atmosphere is
absolutely perfect for photos!

2️⃣ Cobalt Blue Ocean & Pristine White Sand Beach
Here, transparent waters, white sands, and dramatic rock formations blend together,
allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

3️⃣ Tranquil and Relaxed Atmosphere
Its somewhat challenging accessibility means it's not overly crowded,
and you'll find locals enjoying sea swims and picnics,
creating a unique and inviting atmosphere.

4️⃣ Diverse Activities
You can reach Cathedral Cove in various ways,
including hiking, boat tours, kayaking, and day tours.
All of these reasons make Cathedral Cove an absolute must-visit
for your Auckland area adventure!
2. 4 Ways to Get to Cathedral Cove

While you can't drive directly to Cathedral Cove, there are several wonderful ways to reach it.

1️⃣ Boat Tour
The most comfortable way to visit is by taking
a boat tour departing from Whitianga.
You can currently book these on kkday, and they offer a chance to explore
the stunning coastal scenery and caves around Cathedral Cove.
While you won't disembark directly at Cathedral Cove, many visitors share highly satisfied reviews.
So, if you're someone who prefers not to break a sweat or get splashed,
this is definitely an option worth considering!
I wasn't staying near Whitianga,
so I didn't include this in my options.
🥲
⏳ Duration: 2 hours
💰Cost: Around 150 NZD per person
For adults: ~$89

2️⃣ Shuttle Bus + Walk
✔️ The most straightforward way
to get to Cathedral Cove.
During peak season, from October to April,
parking isn't available at the viewpoint above,
so you'll need to take a shuttle bus.
You can catch the shuttle bus
from the Hahei public parking lot.
So, if you've rented a car,
you can park it at the Hahei public parking lot,
then take a shuttle bus to the viewpoint (10 minutes),
and walk for 30 minutes.
This is actually the method I used!
While it involves a bit of trekking,
it's a route where you can soak in
the stunning natural scenery as you journey.
I'll share more details about this below.

3️⃣ Water Taxi
✔️ It's expensive, but the fastest way
to get to Cathedral Cove.
You can catch a water taxi from Hahei Beach.
It reaches Cathedral Cove in just 10 minutes.
While it gets you there the fastest,
the cost is really... hefty.
⏳ Duration: 20 minutes round trip + 1 hour free time
💰 Round-trip fare: 80 NZD (~$47 per person)
Having to spend ~$44 for a round-trip taxi ride...
It's quite a dilemma, isn't it?
They also offer one-way trips from Cathedral Cove to Hahei Beach,
but the distance from the beach
to the public parking lot is quite far,
so whether you choose method 2 or method 3,
I recommend sticking to just one!

4️⃣ Kayak Tour
You can enjoy a kayak tour
departing from Hahei Beach.
It really sounded like a unique way to explore!
Imagine reaching Cathedral Cove
by paddling across the clear, transparent waters of New Zealand..!
⏳ Duration: 4 hours
💰 Cost:
80 NZD for 2 people (~$47)
(when booking online at bookme.nz)
While it was certainly unique,
it required some physical effort, and since we had to head straight to Auckland
afterward,
it wasn't an option for our itinerary.

Once I arrived at Cathedral Cove,
I noticed quite a few people who had arrived by kayak.
If I had had more time,
I think I would have definitely given it a try!
3. My Cathedral Cove Visit Review
Shuttle Bus + Walk (40 minutes one way)
Among the four methods above,
the way I chose to get to Cathedral Cove
was indeed method #2, 'Shuttle Bus + Walk'.
I really deliberated a lot!

Since it was a family trip,
I had to consider my parents' energy levels,
and as there were four of us, cost was also a factor.
So, I opted for the most affordable and practical method.

If I had known about the boat or kayak tours
in advance...
I probably would have considered those options.
(They look so exciting! 💓)
Anyway, let me share the method
I used to get there!

I parked at the Hahei Beach Public Parking Lot
Cathedral Cove Park and Ride & Hahei Visitor Carpark
Once you've parked at,
take a shuttle bus to the track entrance,
and after a 30-minute trek,
you'll arrive.

📍Hahei Beach Visitor Park Carpark Location
90/94 Hahei Beach Road, Hahei 3591 New Zealand
🚘 Parking Fee: Free
Shuttle buses run every 10 minutes,
so we had no trouble getting on board.
🚌 Fare: Round trip 7NZD ~$4

💰Shuttle Bus Fares
✅ Pay directly to the driver with cash
or
✅ Pay by card at the machine
(There's a 3% card surcharge)

✔️ Trekking Difficulty: Moderate
(Gentle ups and downs in between + a few stairs)
✔️ The scenic views from the observation decks along the way are
a major highlight.

🌟 Cathedral Cove Tour Tips!
✅ Highly recommend visiting during the summer peak season!
(The shuttle bus only operates in summer)
During the off-season, you can visit by
parking your rental car at the lookout car park!
✅ Even though it's a relatively short trek, the strong sun can make it
very hot, so
light clothing & sneakers are recommended
✅ Recommended to visit in the morning
(Fewer people and a peaceful atmosphere)
✅ Check the high tide schedule
At high tide, the beach narrows!
