Auckland to Rotorua Day Trip by Rental Car (2026 Guide)

While exploring Auckland in New Zealand's North Island,

I made my way to Rotorua, a renowned destination for its geothermal wonders and rich Māori culture!

Rotorua is a must-visit spot on any North Island itinerary,

where you can experience geysers, hot springs, and lush forests all in one place!

When I looked into tours to Rotorua,

they were roughly ~$150 per person.

For three adults, that's nearly ~$449,

so I decided to compare rental car options.

Driving on the right-hand side (left-hand traffic) felt a bit daunting at first,

but I really wanted the freedom to explore the sights at my own pace!

I'll break down the costs I considered when booking,

pickup locations, and even my actual driving experience!

I visited as a day trip

and explored Te Puia and Waiotapu!

2	A 3-Hour Drive One Way from Auckland

The drive from Auckland to Rotorua is

228km one way, taking about 3 hours.

That means roughly 6 hours of driving round trip!

Since I was traveling with two other adults,

we rented a car and took turns driving,

which made the long distance much more manageable!

3	What Was the Total Rental Car Cost?

Tours from Auckland to Rotorua typically cost

around ~$150 per person.

For three adults, that would be over ~$449,

which felt a bit steep.

That's why I opted for a rental car!

The daily rental fee for the SUV I booked was

around ~$52 per vehicle,

and with comprehensive insurance, it was in the low ~$75 range!

Looking at the breakdown of our rental car expenses,

the cost per person came out to around ~$52.

This option allowed us to save money compared to a guided tour

and gave us the freedom to manage our time at each destination exactly how we wanted,

which is why I chose to rent a car!

4	How to Book a Rental Car

The main platforms for booking rental cars

are Klook and Trip.com.

However, the vehicle pickup locations differ between the two,

so I recommend choosing based on your travel itinerary!

Klook requires pickup and return at the airport,

while Trip.com allowed selection of city branches!

The price including insurance

was about ~$37 more expensive with Trip.com.

However, getting between Auckland Airport and the city center

takes about 45 minutes of travel time.

If you go to the airport to pick up the car and then return to your accommodation after dropping it off,

you'll incur two extra trips and additional transport costs!

If you're picking up a car to align with your arrival and departure, Klook is a great choice.

But if you're staying in the city and planning a day trip,

start by comparing Trip.com's city branch locations closest to you!

5	What to Prepare for Your Rental Car

Prepare your original Korean driver's license, International Driving Permit (IDP),

a payment card in the main driver's name,

your passport, and your booking confirmation!

An International Driving Permit (IDP) alone is not sufficient;

you must also carry your original driver's license.

6	My Experience Driving a Right-Hand Drive Car

My nearest branch was fully booked, so

I had to travel by bus to a branch

far from the city center.

Don't make the same mistake I did by traveling unnecessarily;

if your itinerary is set,

I recommend checking nearby branches in advance!

In my case, the pick-up process, including name verification and document signing,

was not difficult.

For navigation, I used Google Maps on my phone!

I found the navigation more challenging than the actual driving,

so I stuck with the familiar Google Maps on my phone.

At first, I was a bit nervous,

but there were fewer cars in Auckland than I expected,

and the traffic light system didn't feel complicated at all!

However, driving for long hours round trip was quite tiring.

I picked up the car around 7-8 AM and returned it around 10 PM.
