This is a free camping zone exclusively for self-contained campervans. While it might not show up on CamperMate, a quick search for "Lake Pukaki Overnight Campervan Parking" on Google Maps will lead you right there!

The free camping area along Haymans Road, which was previously permitted, is now prohibited. So, listen up: currently, this spot near the hydroelectric power station is the *only* legal free camping area on Lake Pukaki.
Parking Zones & Spot Selection Tips
The area is quite expansive, so picking the right spot is key! It's generally divided into three main zones:

The middle zone might be the smallest, but it boasts the best lake access and beach views. The upper zone is the most spacious, offering fantastic expansive vistas. As for the lower zone, it's conveniently close to the restrooms, but the views aren't quite as breathtaking.

My personal golden tip after visiting is this: if you go too far up, you'll be a bit further from the lake, and if you go too far down, it can feel a bit too close, almost making the landscape feel a little confined. Seriously, the middle spot is absolutely the sweet spot!

During peak season, aim to arrive before 2 PM to snag one of those prime spots right by the lake. Arrive any later, and you might find all the best spots are already taken!
Consider this your ultimate guide, covering the best spots, facilities, and breathtaking views of the Pukaki Free Campsite – so go ahead and save this info!
Facilities & Important Notes

You'll only find pit toilets here; there's no drinking water, showers, or electricity. Depending on your chosen spot, the toilets can be quite a trek, so after you've set up, take a good walk around. If you spot a restroom, it's probably a good idea to make a pit stop!
As any seasoned campervan traveler knows, using the external toilets can often be far more convenient. That said, it gets quite dark at night, so for safety and comfort, I'd recommend sticking to your campervan's facilities after dusk.

Heads Up!
✔ No drinking water available
✔ You'll need to handle your own trash disposal
✔ Expect it to be quite windy here
✔ No open fires allowed outside your campervan
The views are gorgeous, and honestly, the fact that there are no sandflies here is a major win in my book!
My Honest Experience

On this particular day, we were on our way from Wanaka to Tekapo, and we decided to stay at a free campsite so we could embark on the Hooker Valley Track early the next morning.

We found Alpine Cook Salmon just around the corner, so we picked up some takeaway to finish at our campervan.

We secured a spot in the upper parking area
Even though the restroom was a bit of a walk, the panoramic, unobstructed view was so stunning that I wished I could stay here forever, whether I was having a meal or just relaxing in the campervan.

As the sun set over the wide-open landscape,
the entire world was painted in hues of red.
It was truly a breathtaking sunset, a symphony of colors I hadn't experienced since my trip to Zanzibar, Tanzania!

It seemed like the restrooms were cleaned every other day.
However, being a pit toilet, there was a strong smell of disinfectant and naphthalene, and the seats were often dirty.
So, it's definitely a good idea to bring disinfectant wipes with you.
Luckily, we arrived early, so we were able to use it when it was relatively clean.
*It was quite potent in the early morning...

When you look up at the sky at night,
it's absolutely teeming with stars, as if they're about to spill down on you.
I really regret not being able to capture it in a photo. ㅜ

Lake Pukaki is such a gem; it would be a shame to only stop for salmon and then leave.
Since it's a route you'll naturally pass through on the way to Mount Cook,
I highly recommend spending a free night here.
If you have some time, it's best to secure your spot before sunset.

In the next post, I'll be sharing about Mount Cook National Park
and the Hooker Valley Trekking Course!
