When you're exploring New Zealand's South Island, Wanaka

is definitely a city you should experience for at least two nights.

From running along Lake Wanaka to enjoying its restaurants and cafes,

it was simply too charming to spend just one day there!

Today, I'll be sharing my experience at

the Hampshire Holiday Park in Wanaka,

from the best spots to barbecue tips and more!

Booking Hampshire Holiday Park

I made my booking using the CamperMate app.

CamperMate is an essential app for campervan travel in New Zealand.

For detailed instructions on how to use it, please refer to my previous post.

There's one crucial thing you absolutely need to know:

There are two places with similar names for Hampshire Holiday Park.

❌ Hampshire Holiday Parks - Glendhu Bay

When booking, make sure you select Wanaka!

Check-in Process

The gate is blocked by a barrier.

The reception is located on the left, just before the barrier.

You'll need to check in there and get a PIN code

to pass through the barrier.

They'll ask for your vehicle registration number at check-in,

so it's handy to have a photo of it or memorize it beforehand.

The PIN code isn't just for entering,

you'll also need to enter it when exiting.

At the reception, you can also pick up items like body wash and shampoo

that previous travelers have left behind,

all for free!

Check-out is by 10 AM.

There's no need to inform the reception;

simply exit by the designated time.

There's also a dump station opposite the reception,

so make sure to use it after check-out.

Recommended Prime Spots

For campsites, always go for

the spots closest to the restrooms, showers, and dining hall – they're the best.

✔ Section 216-224

✔ Section 188-191

These two sections are closest to the shower facilities and dining hall.

If you note your preferred camping site number in the special requests when booking,

you'll have a higher chance of getting a great spot.

The grounds are incredibly spacious, so if you're assigned a spot far away,

walking back and forth every time can get tiring.

Amenities Review

Kitchen, Dining Area

Among the holiday parks I visited,

the kitchen here was quite well-equipped.

✔ Coffee vending machine, regular vending machine, toaster

✔ 8 cooking stations and sinks

✔ Kitchen utensils, shared spices available

✔ 2 refrigerators (name tags required inside)

However, some of the gas stoves were not working.

It's a good idea to turn them on and check before settling down.

Showers & Restrooms

The restrooms and showers were spacious and clean.

The hot water flowed well, and the showers even had

individual changing areas, which was very convenient.

A downside is that there are no hairdryers.

Most holiday parks don't have hairdryers, so

it's a good idea to bring one with you.

BBQ Tips

One of the advantages here is the presence of BBQ facilities.

You can exchange bills for coins at the reception.

The BBQ grill can be used for approximately 20 minutes

by inserting a $1 coin.

The heat was quite good, so $1-2 was sufficient.

However, the grill is only cleaned once, around checkout time, so

if a previous user used it before you, there might be some charring left.

I recommend getting there early to use it.

It's much cleaner if you drizzle a little oil, wipe it once, and then

start cooking.

Steak grilled on the BBQ

was much tastier than when I cooked it in the kitchen.

Make sure to utilize the BBQ facilities whenever they're available.

The BBQ facilities are located near the kitchen.

Even if it's a bit of a walk, you'll find a BBQ area over near Site 47.

Nearby Attractions & Shopping

Nearby Attractions

Within walking distance from the Holiday Park, you'll find Wanaka's famous Lone Tree and

a beautiful lake promenade.

While the view from the accommodation itself might be a little disappointing,

stepping out and immediately being greeted by stunning scenery is

the true advantage of this accommodation.

Grocery Shopping

Wanaka New World Mart is within walking distance.

Just a heads-up: campervans aren't allowed inside the supermarket, so you'll need to go on foot.

On the way, you'll spot donut and ice cream shops,

so I highly recommend grabbing a treat on your way back from grocery shopping.

If you're choosing a campervan accommodation in Wanaka,

the Hampshire Holiday Parks Wanaka location

offers a fantastic layout and perfectly good facilities.

Make sure to take advantage of the BBQ grills,

and definitely bring a hairdryer!
