Salmon Fishing Experience Review

It was my first time fishing, and I caught two!
Since it's a fish farm, there are so many salmon you can actually see them.
Once you cast your line, you'll get a bite quickly.

There are reviews saying you even get bites with an empty hook,
so it's a place where managing the number of fish you catch is really important.

It's structured so you pay for what you catch,
so if you get too carried away by the thrill of the catch and reel in too many, it'll be difficult to process them all,
and you'll end up paying a lot. So, try to stick to just one or two!

You have to process the salmon you catch right there on the spot.
If you catch a salmon and put it back into the pond, there's a fine.
A hefty $100...

And after you catch it, you have to kill the salmon by driving a nail into its head.
The scales get really slimy with fluids, so make sure to hold it firmly
to avoid hurting your hand while you do it.

It takes quite a while for the food to come out,
so you can take a walk around the area or enjoy the view from the outdoor seating,
and the wait won't feel wasted at all.
My Honest Food Review

To be frank, I personally don't recommend the sashimi here.
There's a special Pukaki Alpine Salmon in New Zealand's South Island,
and the sashimi from that salmon was far more delicious.

The smoked salmon is quite good when served on a cracker with wasabi,
and soy sauce – that one-bite combination is pretty fantastic.
If you can't finish it, you can self-pack it to take home,
so don't force yourself to eat it all if you're full!

I actually packed mine up, brought it back to my accommodation,
bought some Alfredo sauce from the supermarket,
and made salmon pasta – that combination was absolutely the best!

This place is more about the experience than the taste itself.
When you consider where else you could have the unique experience of catching your own salmon
and having it cooked right there on the spot, you'll agree it's definitely worth a visit
beyond New Zealand.
Important Things to Know

✔ One fishing rod is enough for two people to take turns.
✔ You must purchase any salmon you catch (putting it back in the pond incurs a fine).
✔ Food takes 30-40 minutes or more to arrive – enjoy a stroll around while you wait.
✔ Don't be shy with the bait – feel free to use it all up; they'll quickly give you more.
✔ Walk-ins are welcome, no reservation needed.
✔ Salmon can be packed to go – great for cooking at your accommodation.

This is a place where the experience truly matters more than just the taste.
The 'feel' of the catch was genuinely fantastic, making the fishing itself incredibly enjoyable.
Hauling in my first big salmon with the net, feeling that rod tremble, was a dopamine rush!
It's an experience from New Zealand that I think I'll remember for a long time.
Personally, I found choosing smoked or grilled salmon, or taking it to go and using it for pasta at the accommodation,
to be a more satisfying approach than the sashimi.
Next time, I'll be back with a review of Pukaki Alpine Salmon.
