Why you should pass through Cromwell

When traveling from Queenstown to Wanaka,
the Crown Range Road, which your navigation automatically directs you to,
is a restricted road for campervans.

If you add Cromwell as a transit point,
you can avoid this road and travel safely.
While it might seem like a road you just have to pass through,
Cromwell has some truly unmissable spots.
🔺 [Curious about other restricted roads?]
Jackson Orchards
Fruit picking experience, Fruit store

The first recommended spot is
Jackson Orchards.

It's a place that sells fruits directly grown in their own orchard,
and local reviews are quite good.

You can experience PYO (Pick Your Own),
where you can pick the cherries you want to buy yourself from December to January.
If you're on a family trip with children,
it's an experience worth trying at least once.
Jones Family Fruit Stall
Fruit store, Fresh fruit ice cream

The second recommended spot is
Jones Family Fruit Stall.
It's so famous in Cromwell that even tour buses stop by.

The biggest advantage is that, unlike supermarkets, you can taste the fruit before buying.
As I mentioned in my previous New World post,
New Zealand only has seasonal fruits,
and sometimes if you buy them at the end of the season, they're not very tasty.

If you taste them here and confirm the flavor before buying,
you can purchase with confidence, knowing you won't get a bad batch.
The **red kiwis and apples** were delicious,
but unfortunately, **flat peaches** weren't in season, so they weren't available.
Beyond fruits, they also sell
**New Zealand souvenirs** like Manuka honey.
🔺 Hot Tips for Discounts at New World, New Zealand's Representative Supermarket

I also tried ice cream here this time,
so if you're specifically looking for it, feel free to check it out!
If you've been worried about data during your New Zealand campervan trip,
there's an eSIM that works great even in smaller towns like Cromwell.

If you turn on Netflix using your data,
**you can watch the same content you enjoyed back home in New Zealand.**
It was truly invaluable during nights spent relaxing in the campervan.

I ordered the **cherry-flavored** ice cream.
Seeing the staff member wearing a **hygiene cap** while making it,
it instantly got my seal of approval.

They put plenty of cherries into vanilla ice cream,
then topped it with more vanilla before mixing it with a machine.
**The rich flavor of New Zealand's dairy, renowned for its strong dairy industry,**
**and the cherries blended together wonderfully – it was truly fantastic.**
If I hadn't had a tight schedule, I probably would have ordered another one!
Lowburn Harbour
Overnight Campervan parking
Cromwell Free Campsite

My third recommended spot is
**Lowburn Harbour Campsite**, officially known as
Lowburn Harbour Overnight Campervan Parking
or Lowburn Harbour camping site.

If you've rented a campervan and only use paid holiday parks,
it's honestly a bit of a missed opportunity, right?
**This is a free overnight campground, equipped with trash cans and even restrooms.**

A river flows right next to it, and the riverside scenery is absolutely stunning.
In the morning, you might even see **geese**!
Many people simply did their dishes quickly in the restroom.
I also took a quick wash here before heading to the next
paid campsite to get a proper wash later.

**Since it's by the river, it can get quite chilly at night.**
On cold nights, I recommend using a hand warmer when you sleep,
or layering 2-3 blankets.
In summer, right next door, they operate something called **Kiwi Water Park**,
a water activity facility similar to a 'ppaji' (wakeboarding/waterskiing park).
If you love water activities, this place is perfect for you!

Cromwell might seem like just a stopover, but
once you get to know it, it's definitely worth taking a little time to explore.
Sampling fresh fruits, enjoying an ice cream,
and spending a night by the river,
this section could easily become one of the most memorable days of your New Zealand campervan adventure.

For those who've stopped by Cromwell
on the way from Queenstown to Wanaka,
which fruit stall did you like best?
If you could share in the comments which fruits were in season,
it would be super helpful for other travelers!
