we journeyed past Te Anau, explored scenic spots along Milford Road including the stunning Mirror Lakes,
and capped it all off with an unforgettable cruise. Talk about a jam-packed adventure!

What truly made this trip memorable were New Zealand's signature colossal mountains, shimmering lakes, and boundless grasslands. And the best part? Getting up close and personal with majestic waterfalls right from our cruise! 🌊⛰️
So, join me as I share the exact route we followed,
everything about our New Zealand Milford Sound tour – from my review and booking tips to the unforgettable cruise experience.
It's all here, in one comprehensive post!
Setting Off from Queenstown

If you're planning a day trip to Milford Sound,
be prepared to dedicate a full, long day to the adventure!
We hopped on an early morning bus conveniently located near our accommodation,
and luckily, the pickup point was super close, making the start of our journey wonderfully easy.
It was still quite dark before the sun made its grand appearance,
but soon after we set off, a breathtaking pink sky began to unfold outside our window.
While getting up at such an early hour can be a bit of a challenge,
catching views like this definitely made it worthwhile! 🌄

In New Zealand, simply driving along the roads is an experience in itself.
The landscape constantly transforms, revealing magnificent mountains and vast grasslands.
So, the time spent on the bus felt far from boring; it was part of the adventure!
However, given the considerable travel time by road,
if you're prone to motion sickness, I strongly recommend bringing some anti-nausea medication!
Funnily enough, my motion sickness medication actually made me super drowsy,
so I found myself nodding off throughout the journey 😴
2. Te Anau: A Refreshing Pit Stop

After a good stretch of driving, we finally pulled into Te Anau.
This town serves as a convenient rest stop
before you delve deeper into Milford Sound.
It's the perfect spot to stretch your legs, grab a snack, and use the facilities.
Heads up: if a lot of people rush in at once, lines can get pretty long,
so if you're peckish, it's a good idea to grab your snacks and drinks first before doing anything else.

Honestly, for me, the highlight wasn't just the rest stop itself,
it was definitely getting to see the sheep roaming nearby.
🐑🐏
As you journey through New Zealand,
you'll constantly spot sheep and cows grazing in the fields. While it becomes a familiar sight, their undeniable cuteness never gets old!
3. Fiordland National Park & the Mesmerizing Mirror Lakes

Once you leave Te Anau,
the spectacular landscapes of Fiordland National Park truly begin to unfold.
There are several fascinating spots along the way where you can hop off for a quick exploration,
and one that absolutely captivated us was the incredible Mirror Lakes 🌈

True to its name, on days with perfect weather and mirror-still water,
the surrounding mountains and sky are said to reflect perfectly on the lake's surface, creating a stunning natural mirror.
A short stroll along the picturesque boardwalk nestled among the trees leads you to
this serene little lake.

On the day we visited, it had just finished a light drizzle,
so the sky wasn't perfectly clear, but even so, it was breathtaking.
Instead, the clouds hanging around the mountains felt truly New Zealand and were incredibly beautiful.
And even spotted a rainbow 🌈

I was busy snapping a few photos, when I suddenly realized everyone else had vanished!
I was so surprised I scurried off to catch up, haha!

Another beautiful rainbow I spotted from the bus as we set off again 🌈
It was absolutely dazzling... 🥺
The Scenery Along Milford Road

Even after passing Mirror Lake, we didn't head straight to the cruise terminal.
Instead, our tour stopped at several scenic points, including Monkey Creek, where we could soak in stunning views of the mountains and valleys.
The water was incredibly clear,
and surrounded by towering mountains,
the sheer scale of it all was far grander in person than any photo could convey!

As you journey towards Milford Sound, you'll also pass through the impressive Homer Tunnel.
Once you emerge from the long tunnel, the landscape transforms dramatically, and it truly felt like the mountains grew even more colossal as we neared our destination.
5. Booking Your Milford Sound Tour

There are several cruise operators for Milford Sound, but their main routes are quite similar, so the choice of operator might not be the most critical factor.
Normally, I prefer booking directly on official websites, but the Milford Sound official site had so many options and details to check in English, it ended up being more cumbersome than I anticipated. 😢

Plus, having experienced it firsthand, I personally felt the underwater observatory wasn't a strictly necessary part of the tour. So, I highly recommend checking Klook to easily compare itineraries and inclusions
at a glance, then booking whatever suits you best!
Especially if you just check these key points, choosing becomes much easier:
* Departure Location
* Round-trip bus inclusion
* Cruise inclusion/type
* Lunch or snack inclusion
* Hotel pickup availability

It's super easy to compare itineraries, inclusions, what to bring, and read lots of reviews all in one place, so it's a great idea to start by checking out the options below.

6. The Milford Sound Cruise Experience

The cruise typically includes a delightful picnic lunch and complimentary tea/coffee. You can also purchase additional snacks, beverages, and alcoholic drinks from the onboard cafe.
Oh... a little tip: if you spot cup ramen for sale, maybe skip it! It wasn't tasty at all ㅠㅠㅠ (I definitely recommend bringing your own simple snacks or treats! ⭐️)
7. Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls

As you cruise along,
you'll get up close to Milford Sound's magnificent waterfalls.
🌊
The most famous are the majestic Bowen Falls
and the stunning Stirling Falls.
At first, the waterfalls you see from a distance
might just make you think, 'Wow, that's beautiful!'
But as the boat gets closer and closer, the feeling completely transforms.
Especially at Stirling Falls,
the cruise boat approaches so closely it feels like you're almost sailing right into the waterfall!
SPLASH! 🌊🌊🌊

If you ventured out to the front deck,
you'd get a refreshing 'water shower' on your head and clothes! LOL.
If you want to fully embrace this experience,
I highly recommend bringing a waterproof windbreaker or a light raincoat.

Nevertheless, the experience of seeing the waterfalls this up close
definitely left a lasting impression.
8. New Zealand Fur Seals

In Milford Sound,
it's not just about the waterfalls and mountains; you can also encounter incredible wildlife.
Along with seals, if you're lucky,
you might even spot dolphins or penguins!
On the day we visited,
we spotted a single fur seal resting on a rock. 🦭
Even if it was just one, we were absolutely thrilled to watch it! LOL.

I've heard stories of people seeing several seals at once,
so it seems to really depend on your luck on the day!
9. Returning to Queenstown

After completing our entire itinerary,
we hopped back on the bus and returned to Queenstown.

It was so nice to grab a cup of coffee at the rest stop halfway through the journey.

On the way back, we continued to be greeted by meadows, mountains,
and the quintessential New Zealand scenery.

And then, we met some adorable alpacas along the way! 🦙🤎
They were so gentle and utterly charming.

Even after seeing Milford Sound's waterfalls to my heart's content,
I confess, I was the one who got most excited seeing the alpacas! Haha~

Sheep and cows continued to dot the landscapes outside the window,
and as the sun began to set, the colors of the scenery gradually transformed.

And when we finally got back to our accommodation, the instant ramen
and kimchi we devoured were absolutely heavenly... 🫠
10. Wrapping Up

Honestly, I was tired at the time, but looking back now,
