As you prepare for your New Zealand South Island trip,

are you racking your brain trying to figure out your Milford Sound itinerary?

You might be agonizing over whether to rent a car or join a tour,

and hearing that it's an 8-hour round trip from Queenstown

is probably making many of you anxious.

Today, I'll share everything I personally discovered, from how to get a half-price cruise

to my honest review, including why you absolutely *must* bring instant cup noodles.

3 Ways to Get to Milford Sound

There are three main ways

to get to Milford Sound.

By Air

The first is by helicopter or scenic flight

departing from Queenstown.

While offering breathtaking aerial views,

it's the fastest way to get there,

but also the most expensive and highly dependent on good weather.

By Tour Bus

The second option is a cruise + tour bus package

departing from Queenstown or Te Anau.

By Driving Yourself

The third way is to drive yourself by rental car,

which is a 4-hour one-way journey from Queenstown.

I booked a campervan and stayed overnight at Milford Sound Lodge,

then took an early morning cruise the next day.

If you're driving yourself, it's definitely best to plan an overnight stay

in Te Anau or Milford Sound Lodge.

The last hour or so leading up to Milford Sound

involves driving on winding, hilly roads,

which was quite challenging.

How to Book Milford Sound Affordably

There are three main ways to book your cruise:

You can book through official websites, travel platforms (like MyRealTrip, Klook, etc.),

or New Zealand's dedicated activity booking site,

Bookme.

If you're only booking the cruise, getting in early on Bookme was actually the most budget-friendly option.

However, if you're looking to book a package that includes a bus tour departing from Queenstown,

paying for everything at once through a travel platform like MyRealTrip or Klook

offered a pretty good price.

Parking and Free Shuttle Information

For those coming by rental car, you absolutely need to know about the parking situation.

The free parking lot tends to fill up almost completely by around 9:30 AM.

It can accommodate campervans and is generally easy for regular cars to park,

but the downside is it's a 30-minute walk to the pier.

Walking along the road can be dangerous, so

it's best to take the forest path next to the sign.

On the other hand, the paid parking lot is right in front of the Visitor Information Centre,

so it's only about a 15-minute walk.

Since the tour lasts about 2 hours,

paying for 3 hours of parking should be just right.

Here's a super useful tip for you!

After your cruise, on your way back,

if you're lucky, you might be able to catch a free shuttle bus that goes to the airport near the free parking lot.

Even the staff aren't entirely sure about the exact schedule, but they say it generally comes consistently with a 20-30 minute interval.

I was super lucky too; the bus arrived right after I asked about it!

If you see this bus (referring to the picture above),

definitely ask the driver before you get on!

To avoid a long, tiring walk back from the parking lot later, save this picture and keep an eye out for this bus!

RealNZ Mariner Boarding Review

Among the many incredible vessels, I chose to ride RealNZ's Mariner.

I saw other cruises passing by,

but they were so crowded that I felt my boat was

much more spacious and comfortable.

The age group mainly consisted of

older travelers.

When it rains, even more magnificent waterfalls appear,

and the scenery is truly artistic, but the wind was so strong and

the temperature was chilly, so it was a bit hard to keep sightseeing outside.

Since the tour route hugs the left side

in a large loop,

you'll get a much better view if you grab a window seat on the left side in the direction the cruise is moving.

The onboard snack bar sells coffee, snacks, and sandwiches,

And here's a really important tip!

They provide hot water for free.

Make sure to pack instant noodles and some simple snacks from home.

After being out in the cold wind,

the broth of instant noodles tastes absolutely heavenly.

Since the tour starts early in the morning, if you're lucky,

you might even see a pod of dolphins, but unfortunately,

I only got to see adorable baby seals.

The English-speaking guide kept announcing over the loudspeaker that today's weather

was truly wonderful.

I listened intently next to him

but my partner didn't seem too interested and stayed inside the warm cabin the whole time.

Amidst the colossal landscapes of Mother Nature,

it was a day where humans felt truly small.

If you're planning a family trip to New Zealand,

this is definitely one of the places I'd want to go with my parents.
