Maui Beach 4-Seater Rental Cost Breakdown
In my previous post, [How to Book a Campervan on a Budget],
I've laid out all the booking methods for you.
Check it out for even more helpful tips!

I opted for the Maui Beach 4-seater model.
Our Actual Payment Breakdown
Item | Details |
Rental Period | 8 days |
Insurance | Value Pack Basic |
Additional Options | Windshield & Tire Coverage Roadside Assistance |
One-way Drop-off Fee | Queenstown drop-off included |
Total Paid | Under NZD 3,000 |

⚠️ Important Insurance Update (Post-April 2026)⚠️
The Windshield & Tire Damage option and Roadside Assistance
have been removed from the standard Value Pack and are now separate add-ons.
Given the abundance of gravel and unpaved roads on the South Island,
I highly recommend adding both of these for peace of mind!
By comparing prices three months before our trip,
we managed to save approximately $500 NZD (about ~$314 USD)!
This truly shows why timing your booking is so essential!

The list of restricted roads is super important,
and I've got it all laid out for you below.
Queenstown Airport → Campervan Pickup Guide
From Queenstown Airport to the campervan office,
they offer a complimentary pickup service!
How to Call for Pickup Service

① Head towards the Domestic Arrivals area.
② After exiting the gate, follow the 'Transfers & Ride-Share Waiting Area' sign.

③ Turn right around the building, and you'll spot some lockers alongside an 'Off-site Rental Cars' sign.
You'll then see a black phone.

④ Pick up the phone and dial your rental company's number. For Maui Rentals, it's 809.

Once you call, they'll come pick you up right away!
Our waiting time was super short, only about 5 minutes.
The Campervan Handover Process

Many blogs mention a "test that takes an hour,"
but thanks to having completed online check-in in advance,
I skipped the test and only needed my driver's license, international driving permit, and passport
After a quick check, we picked up the car in no time.
I highly recommend doing the online check-in beforehand!

What You'll Learn During Vehicle Handoff
The staff will check the vehicle's exterior and interior condition with you,
and walk you through each of these items:
✔ How to use LPG gas
✔ How to connect to power (electricity)
✔ How to refill water
✔ How to dispose of wastewater
✔ How to empty the toilet
✔ How to use interior power and lighting

If you record a video during this training, you can refer back to it
anytime if you forget something on your trip. Make sure to film it!
And one last thing the staff emphasized:
Always be careful with left-hand traffic.
They said driving itself isn't difficult.

While at the office, make sure to check out the 'Free Zone'
where other travelers leave behind useful items.
I found a large plastic bag there that came in handy everywhere.
Important Notes

Essential Checklist Before Return
Item | Details |
Fuel | Refill to full |
LPG Gas | Refill to full |
Used Water Tank | Empty |
Toilet | Clean |
Personal Belongings | Do not leave in vehicle |
Trash Can | Empty |
Vehicle Interior | Clean |
Gas stations near return locations can sometimes be expensive.
It's more economical to fill up beforehand in a town 5-10km away.
I returned my campervan in Christchurch,
and in the next post, I'll share some airport-area
dump stations and affordable gas stations!
4 Roads Prohibited for Campervans

Road Name | Notes |
Crown Range Road | ⚠️ Be cautious on the Queenstown → Wanaka section |
Skippers Road | Rough, unpaved mountain road |
Ball Hut Road | Towards Mount Cook |
Mt. Aspiring Road | Towards Aspiring National Park |
The Crown Range Road is the most important one.
When traveling from Queenstown to Wanaka,
Google Maps often automatically directs you this way.
Absolutely do not take your campervan on this road.
Queenstown → via Cromwell → Wanaka
By setting Cromwell as an intermediate stop, you can safely avoid the Crown Range Road.
My Actual Experience

Driving Feel
Compared to its size, the accelerator, brake, and steering wheel
felt surprisingly light.
However, I lacked a sense of its width and height,
which was subtly nerve-wracking at first.
There's an auxiliary mirror that shows the area below the side mirror.
It was essential to get into the habit of checking the lane below.

Bed Configuration
The Maui Beach model allows you to set up beds in three locations: the bunk bed, the dining table area, and the seating area.
We decided to keep the seating area permanently set up as a bed throughout our trip.
Since it's designed for four people, there were plenty of blankets,
and covering ourselves with 2-3 each, we slept surprisingly well.
However, depending on which way the ground sloped,
Make sure to adjust the duvet just right.
It was also great for tossing luggage onto – it helped keep smaller items from rolling around.

Gas Usage
After using the gas, always make sure to turn off the LPG tank before and after you set off!
The heat output was surprisingly good, so we often grilled meat!

Toilet Precautions
Always remember to open and close the toilet valve
before and after use.
The toilet tank can overflow while you're driving.
Trust me, this comes from experience!

And then...
On our very first day, we had an accident and broke the wastewater pipe!
That's a long story, so for the full, detailed account,
please check out the post below!

● Maui 809 → call for pickup → head to the office
● Complete online check-in beforehand to skip the on-site briefing
● When picking up the vehicle, definitely film the instruction video
● Absolutely no entry on Crown Range Road – go via Cromwell instead
● Never, ever forget to open and close the toilet valve
The moment you pick up your campervan and hit the road for the very first time,
that's when your New Zealand South Island adventure truly begins!
When those majestic snow-capped mountains unfold outside your window, you'll be absolutely awestruck.
For those curious about the wastewater pipe incident, I'll spill all the details in the next post!
