This time, I rented a **Maui Beach** model for 8 days.
Maui vehicles are typically **1-2 years old or newer**, meaning their interiors are spotless and well-maintained.
They come fully equipped with a shower, toilet, kitchen, refrigerator, and a hot water system.
While this means they come at the highest price point,
I've seen many reviews where cheaper brands frequently experience minor breakdowns, costing travelers precious vacation time.

Booking Timing Pro Tips
During peak season (December-February), booking early often means snagging a better deal!
Plus, it's safer to secure your spot early due to the risk of selling out.
However, shoulder season can be a different story.
I've noticed prices tend to drop closer to the departure date as they try to offload remaining inventory.
I managed to book it about 400 NZD (approximately ~$242) cheaper by waiting roughly 70 days.
Just be aware, it could completely sell out, so
I finalized my booking two weeks before departure.
While waiting longer *might* get you a cheaper price,
there's always the risk of it disappearing entirely!

Previously included in the Value Pack,
Emergency Roadside Assistance (8 NZD/1day) and the
Tire & Windscreen Damage Option (15 NZD/1day)
are now separate add-on options.
Even if it means paying a little extra,
I highly recommend adding these two options.
Roads in New Zealand's South Island can include gravel and unpaved sections,
making tire damage more likely than you might think.
Also, since New Zealand doesn't have specific driver's insurance,
it's essential to get travel insurance from your home country.
When purchasing, be sure to check if it includes a driver's rider.
Campervan Pickup & Interior Facilities
On pickup day, after arriving at the airport, you'll take a shuttle to the pickup depot.
Pre-Pickup Checklist
✔ Self Check-in: Must be completed up to 2 weeks before pickup.
✔ Operating Hours: Usually until 4:30 PM (arrival before 3:30 PM recommended).
✔ Free food items available at the depot (left behind by previous travelers).
Onboard Facilities
✔ Fully equipped kitchenware (pots, plates, cups, knives, etc.).
✔ Refrigerator, electric kettle, and hot water system included.
✔ Toilet and shower space included (not recommended unless urgent).
Campervan Packing Tips
Backpacks are more advantageous than suitcases.
The internal aisle is narrow, so opening a suitcase can quickly make movement uncomfortable.
Realistically, you'll want to immediately store your luggage in the internal compartments upon pickup
and keep empty suitcases tucked away in a corner.
Things to Bring from Home
✔ Electric blanket (essential during periods of significant temperature fluctuations).
✔ Chopsticks (not provided in the vehicle).
✔ Emergency food like instant noodles and pre-cooked rice

They are well-equipped throughout the country,
so you can easily find them on the go.

The THL RoadTrip app is especially useful as it shows free campsites,
and even gas refill station locations,
making it reportedly the most used app during campervan trips.
Tips for Campervan Return
If you take care of these things the night before returning your campervan,
you can return it smoothly without any extra charges.
Interior Cleaning
Exterior dust isn't usually a major issue,
but a Special Cleaning Fee will be charged for interior contamination.
Use the provided broom or vacuum cleaner to clean it once.
Empty the Refrigerator
Leftover ingredients can be donated to the 'Free Food box' at the return depot.
Check Diesel Road User Charges (RUC)
Pay on-site upon return, based on mileage driven.
Check in advance if it's included in your booking package.
Diesel Tax
All campervans must pay
8.04 NZD per 100km upon return.
Make sure to bring enough cash and card for payment upon return.
Refuel 5-10km before the return point
Petrol stations near airports are often more expensive.
It's more economical to fill up in a slightly more distant town beforehand.
Check shuttle operating hours in advance
Many companies offer free shuttles to the airport after return.
Check this in advance to match your flight schedule.
