In my last post, I shared everything from picking up our Maui campervan

to the unfortunate incident where we broke the wastewater pipe.

After that, driving for 8 days myself, there were quite a few things I thought,

"I wish I had known this beforehand!"

From understanding road signs to parking, refueling, and even insurance claims,

I'm going to compile all the practical tips you can use right away!

How to Read New Zealand Road Signs

Speed Limits

Even though a campervan is a large vehicle, you can simply follow the posted speed limits.

However, the maximum speed limit for campervans is 90km/h.

In New Zealand, speed enforcement officers are often hidden.

Many people get speeding tickets when they let their guard down,

so please make sure to always observe the posted speed limits.

Give Way (Yield Road)

While driving, you'll sometimes encounter a

"Give Way" sign before a bridge.

This means you must yield if there's an oncoming vehicle.

These are sections where the bridge is narrow, allowing only one direction of traffic at a time.

Always check for oncoming cars before proceeding.

Overtaking Lane

Only use the right lane for overtaking,

and return to the left lane immediately after completing your overtake.

Passing Bays

As you drive, you'll see signs asking if you have a queue of vehicles behind you,

and a little further on, you'll find a passing bay (a roadside waiting area).

If you pull over briefly here to let the cars behind you pass,

New Zealand drivers will give you a big thumbs up!

Due to the driving culture in New Zealand,

it's considered polite for slower vehicles to yield first.

Campervan Parking Methods & Precautions

Campervans are larger than regular cars,

so you might find yourself needing more than one parking spot.

If there's no sign prohibiting campervan parking,

it was generally okay to park across two spots.

However, be aware that some supermarkets do not allow campervan parking.

How to Read Parking Signs

For paid parking lots, you'll proceed at the payment machine near the entrance in this order:

Select Time → (Occasionally) Enter Vehicle Number → Payment.

Even if you pay for 2 hours and leave after only 1 hour, there are no refunds.

Conversely, if you exceed your paid time, you'll be subject to enforcement, so be mindful.

Shopping Tip

When going to a supermarket or a large shopping mall,

if you head to the parking lot of a large supermarket on the outskirts,

With plenty of spacious spots, parking a campervan (which takes up two spaces) is much easier.

Fuel / Gas / Dump Station Hot Tips

Fuel – Using the Gaspy App

Before fueling up, be sure to check the lowest prices at nearby gas stations using the Gaspy app.

Fuel prices in New Zealand have risen quite a bit, so finding even a slightly cheaper spot is essential.

For a Maui Beach campervan, a full tank usually costs around NZD 150.

This amount can vary depending on fuel prices, so please use it as a reference only.

LPG Gas Refill

Finding LPG refill stations can be trickier than you'd expect.

While the THL RoadTrip app does show LPG refill stations, many of them aren't actually operational when you get there.

Recommended Method

Search for Kiwi Gas or Caltex on Google Maps, then check the Google reviews to confirm if they offer LPG refills before you head out.

Dump Stations

Most dump stations are located near holiday parks.

You'll also find some in urban areas.

If you're planning to return your campervan in Christchurch, Allied Petroleum 24/7 Fuel, right in front of the airport, is the closest dump station to the return location.

Their fuel prices were also cheaper than elsewhere nearby.

Insurance Coverage & The Waste Pipe Accident Outcome

The outcome of the waste pipe accident, which I hinted at in the last post, is finally revealed!

Important things to know before getting insurance

✔ Personal injury accidents are not covered by campervan insurance.

✔ Travel insurance is a must-have.

I signed up for Kakao Travel Insurance.

Value Pack Coverage Scope (based on thl, including Maui, Apollo, Britz, etc.)

The Waste Pipe Accident Outcome

On the very first day, the waste pipe's connection point (outline) cleanly broke off.

Thankfully, the waste pipe's main body was fine, and only the connection point was damaged.

I was absolutely trembling when I returned it, but it was handled by the Value Pack with no extra payment! 😮‍💨

However, the outcome can vary depending on the extent of the damage.

If possible, it's safer to have extra options (like comprehensive insurance) covered.

● Maximum speed 90km/h – watch out for hidden speed cameras/police

● Give Way sign = yield to oncoming traffic

● Parking P+number = Free, $P+number = Paid

● Before LPG refill, check Google reviews for Kiwi Gas / Caltex

● For Christchurch returns, use Allied Petroleum dump station

● Personal injury accidents are not covered by campervan insurance – travel insurance is essential
