If you're planning to hike Hallasan (한라산),
Day trip vs. 2-day, 1-night trip —
Many of you are probably wondering which is better, right?
For my first Hallasan climb,
I opted for a 2-day, 1-night itinerary.
After experiencing it myself,
if climbing Hallasan is your main goal,
I realized it's definitely better to book accommodation
and prepare properly.

A grueling 9-hour hike
Climbing up was tough,
but coming down was even harder..
If I had tried to do it as a day trip,
having to travel straight to the airport afterwards
would have been much more exhausting, I think.

So,
today, for those preparing for their first Hallasan climb,
I'll share the advantages of a 2-day, 1-night climb and recommended accommodations for Hallasan hikers,
and compare the Seongpanak (성판악) and Gwaneumsa (관음사) hiking trails.
Hallasan Ascent
Why a 2-day, 1-night trip is better than a day trip
Climbing Hallasan isn't just a simple up-and-down hike.
If you're aiming for the summit at Baengnokdam (백록담),
you should expect a hike of approximately 9 to 10 hours.
It took me about 9 hours as well.
Especially if it's your first time tackling Hallasan,
the physical exertion is greater than you might imagine!
That's why
I recommend a 2-day, 1-night trip for three key reasons:
1️⃣ Preparing for an early morning climb is much easier.

Hallasan has set
entrance and exit times that vary by season.
If you plan to reach Baengnokdam,
it's advantageous to start moving early in the morning.
Rather than arriving on Jeju (제주)
and starting your climb immediately,
it's much more relaxed to arrive at your accommodation
the day before and get your hiking gear and supplies ready!
Especially if it's your first time climbing Hallasan,
getting enough sleep before you start is crucial!
2️⃣ You can reduce the burden of travel after a 9-hour hike.
Climbing up was tiring, but
descending places an even greater toll on your body.
Especially after a long hike,
all you want to do is shower, rest, and lie down, right?
But if it's a day trip,
you'd have to travel to the airport and catch a flight,
which can make your schedule extremely tight.
Therefore, including accommodation before and after your Hallasan climb
will definitely help with managing your energy!
3️⃣ You can focus on the weather and your climbing schedule.
Hallasan is a place where the hiking experience
can really transform depending on the weather.

When I climbed, the rain made
reaching the summit quite challenging.
The hike took longer, and I expended a lot more energy.
What's more, if you're trying to catch a flight,
you might feel rushed throughout the climb.
Planning a 2-day, 1-night trip
gives you a bit more breathing room for such eventualities.

Of course, booking accommodation doesn't mean
you can avoid trail closures due to bad weather.
Still, if it's your first climb,
I recommend splitting your travel and hiking across separate days
rather than trying to do it all in one.
Hallasan Hiking Accommodation
What criteria should you use to choose?
If climbing Hallasan is the main purpose of your trip,
your selection criteria will be a bit different.
I prioritized these three things first!
First: Proximity to the hiking trail

Since you'll need to start traveling early in the morning,
a location convenient for reaching the Seongpanak or Gwaneumsa trails is ideal.
Second: Room cleanliness and comfortable beds
After nearly 9 hours of hiking,
getting proper rest at your accommodation is crucial, right?
Third: Convenient facilities

It's even more convenient if there's a convenience store nearby
where you can buy water or snacks before your hike.
As I searched for accommodation based on these criteria,
one place that caught my eye was
It's Hotel Nanta Jeju.
Hotel Nanta Jeju: Your Hallasan Mountain Climbing Accommodation
Hotel Nanta Jeju (호텔 난타 제주) is
a hotel highly sought after by those
visiting Jeju (제주) with the purpose of climbing Hallasan Mountain (한라산).
📍 Hotel Nanta Jeju
56-26 Seondolmokdong-gil (선돌목동길), Jeju City (제주시), Jeju Special Self-Governing Province (제주특별자치도)

📌 Address
56-26 Seondolmokdong-gil, Jeju City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province
⏰
Check-in: 3:00 PM
Check-out: 11:00 AM
🏨 Main Facilities
Rooms, restaurant, convenience store, parking facilities, etc.
Especially,
for those considering the Seongpanak (성판악) and Gwaneumsa (관음사) climbing courses,
this hotel offers a great location advantage.
1️⃣ Excellent Location for Hallasan Climbing
It offers good accessibility to the Gwaneumsa Trail (관음사 탐방로),
and since Hallasan climbs start early,
the advantage is that you can reduce travel time.
Of course, the hotel isn't within walking distance of the trails,
so you'll need to plan transportation like a car or taxi
separately.
📌 If you take bus number 281 from in front of the hotel,
you'll arrive at Seongpanak Entrance (성판악입구) (takes about 30 minutes).
2️⃣ Clean Rooms
After a long hike,
aren't clean rooms and comfortable beds
even more important?

The rooms and bedding are kept clean,
so there are many reviews from people who rested comfortably after their hike.
Having experienced a 9-hour hike myself,
I completely understand why these aspects are so important.
3️⃣Convenient with a convenience store and other facilities
You can buy water, snacks, and other climbing essentials
at the convenience store on the first floor.
Hallasan Climbing Course Comparison
Seongpanak vs. Gwaneumsa
There are two main climbing courses
to reach Baengnokdam Crater Lake (백록담) peak on Hallasan Mountain.
Seongpanak Course vs. Gwaneumsa Course
The two courses differ not only in distance
but also in difficulty and scenery.
| Seongpanak Course | Gwaneumsa Course |
One-way distance | 9.6km | 8.7km |
Estimated time to peak | Approx. 4 hours 30 minutes | Approx. 5 hours |
Estimated round trip time | Approx. 9 hours | Approx. 10 hours |
Characteristics | Relatively gentle sections | Steep incline and good scenery |
Recommended for | First-time Hallasan climbers | Those confident in their physical fitness and enjoy scenery |
🏔️ Seongpanak Course
Compared to Gwaneumsa,
it has relatively more gentle sections.
However, because the one-way distance is long,
you should never consider it an easy course.

But if you're attempting Baengnokdam on Hallasan for the first time,
it's one of the most considered courses.
🏔️ Gwaneumsa Course
It's shorter in one-way distance than Seongpanak, but
the incline is steep, and the difficulty is higher.
However, it has the advantage of allowing you to enjoy Hallasan's scenery,
including valleys and Samgakbong Peak (삼각봉).

It's a good course choice for those confident in their physical fitness
or who want to enjoy diverse scenery during their hike.
The course I chose was
Gwaneumsa Start, Seongpanak Descent
My first Hallasan climb went like this:
Gwaneumsa → Baengnokdam Peak → Seongpanak
This is how I proceeded.
While climbing up to Gwaneumsa Temple (관음사),
there were more steep sections than I expected,
and it was really tough.

What's more, it was raining at the time,
which made the hike even more challenging.
The fog made it hard to see ahead,
and after making it to the summit,
I descended via the Seongpanak Trail (성판악).

If you take this route like I did,
it's a course that utilizes different trails,
so while it has the advantage of allowing you to enjoy
both courses,
you should be aware that
the starting point and descent point will be different.
For my next climb up Hallasan (한라산),
I'm planning a 2-day, 1-night trip.
The 9-hour hike was by no means easy,
and the ascent, especially with the rain,
was incredibly challenging.

Even after all this time,
I still feel a strong desire to go back again.
This time, on a clear, rain-free day,
I really want to capture the views of
Baengnokdam Crater Lake (백록담) with a bit more leisure.
If you're preparing for a Hallasan climb,
I recommend thoroughly researching your accommodation
just as carefully as you plan your climbing course.

Especially if it's your first time climbing Hallasan,
try to plan for a 2-day, 1-night trip rather than a day trip,
allowing yourself a bit more time.
When booking hotels, even for the same date and room,
prices and benefits can vary depending on the booking platform.
If you have a preferred platform you usually use,
also check for member discounts or loyalty point benefits.
