Hayuldalm: A Jeonju Gaeksa Must-Try for Pork & Beef Lovers
A Specialty Meat Restaurant Where They Grill Everything for You
Even on a blustery, rainy day, I found myself drawn to Hayuldalm,
a renowned restaurant nestled near Jeonju Gaeksa Hanok Village.
It’s a beloved spot that I used to visit way back when it was Cafe Universe,
so seeing it now, beautifully renovated as a BBQ restaurant,
made me feel an extra sense of warmth!
Every time I visit Jeonju, I’ve always noticed the crowds and wondered about this place.
Luckily, my wonderful younger sibling, who’s a Hayuldalm regular, took me there!
Hayuldalm Essential Information
Address - 1st, 2nd Floor, 16 Hyeonmu1-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si
Operating Hours - 4:00 PM – 10:30 PM (Mon-Fri), 12:00 PM – 10:30 PM (Sat, Sun)

While we waited for the 12 PM opening on the weekend,
Sik-K’s dreamy music flowed from the speakers outside the restaurant.
The rainy scenery coupled with the ethereal tunes created a strangely perfect harmony,
making the wait anything but boring—it was actually quite atmospheric and lovely! :)
Hayuldalm 1st Floor: Waiting & Pre-Order System

Hayuldalm, a popular BBQ spot in Jeonju Gaeksa, draws in both locals and tourists alike.
We were eagerly waiting right at the 12 PM opening on the weekend,
but alas, another lady managed to slip in just before us,
so we had to settle for being the second party to enter!
After that, customers just kept pouring in as if on cue –
it was truly amazing!
On weekends, arriving right at opening time, just like we did,
seems like a pretty smart move!

Hayuldalm operates with a unique system: you place your initial order on the first floor,
and then you’re guided upstairs to your table on the second floor! How cool is that?!
Of course, if we needed to order anything extra during our meal,
we could easily do so from the second floor, so there was no inconvenience at all.

While we waited, we also got a peek at the meat aging beautifully in the refrigerator.
And with the livestock grade confirmation certificate and slaughter inspection certificate clearly on display,
my confidence in the quality of their meat just soared!
Hayuldalm 2nd Floor Atmosphere

Following the staff's guidance, we headed up to the second floor,
and I couldn't resist taking a picture of all the celebrity autographs adorning the walls!

My sibling mentioned that the tables were replaced with wider ones after our visit,
but honestly, even when we were there, I didn't feel that the original tables were particularly cramped.
There was even storage space under the chairs, which was super convenient for stashing our bags and belongings.
All in all, it was a perfectly comfortable and inviting atmosphere for a meal.
Hayuldalm Menu

Hayuldalm specializes in unique cuts of both pork and beef,
and the absolute best part? You can indulge in both simultaneously!
For pork, they offer diaphragm (garenmak-sal), special shoulder (teukjeonji), and hongsi-sal (a tender, reddish cut).
As for beef, you can choose from premium beef tongue (teuksang-useol), Hanwoo tri-tip (hanwoo-samgak), and woo-mi-gui (a special beef cut).
Their meal menu is quite diverse, too, featuring delights like Gochujang Stew, Perilla Oil Buckwheat Noodles,
traditional Cast Iron Pot Rice, and assorted Boiled Meat (Modum Suyuk)!

Their alcohol selection is also quite extensive,
and get this – they even provide milk thistle when you order drinks! Talk about thoughtful service!!
Corkage is also very reasonable, at only ~$7 per bottle.
Hayuldalm: My Honest Take

The table was impeccably set with a neat trio of chili peppers, kale, and pickled chili peppers,
alongside green onion kimchi, white kimchi, sansho soy sauce, salt, wasabi,
and ssamjang – truly a perfect spread to complement the meat!

Even the grill pan felt uniquely Jeonju, with a fun hanok tiled roof design – so cool!

What made me feel good right from the start was the pre-meal welcome drink!
Since you could choose between sweet pumpkin sikhye and moju (a traditional Korean rice wine drink),
I asked for one of each, and they were perfect for a light palate cleanser before digging into the meat.
1. Garonmak-sal (Pork Skirt Steak)

First up, 2 servings of Garonmak-sal!!
It came out beautifully rolled, and just by looking at it, the meat quality seemed absolutely excellent.

One of the biggest advantages of Haeyuldam is that a staff member grills the meat for you from start to finish!!
You don't have to lift a finger; the staff expertly grills the meat, so all you have to do is simply enjoy every delicious bite.

This Garonmak-sal wasn't Min Yoon-gi, but it definitely had that *yoon-gi* (lustrous shine)!
For the first bite, I dipped it purely in salt and took a big, satisfying mouthful!

They also grilled chamnamul (Korean mountain herbs) alongside it,
and its fragrant aroma paired quite well with the meat.

The meat itself was delicious, but it was even more delicious when I put a piece of meat on chamnamul, along with wasabi, green onion kimchi (pa-kimchi), and pickled vegetables (jangajji), somehow?!
2. Jjageuli Jjigae (Spicy Stew)

The Jjageuli Jjigae (Spicy Stew) served as a complimentary dish!
The moment I took one bite, I immediately thought, 'Oh, this *has* to be eaten with rice,' so I promptly ordered an additional pot of gamasot-bap (rice cooked in an iron pot) lol.
At that point, I had no idea that gamasot-bap could be *this* delicious.
3. Hanwoo Samgak (Korean Beef Triangle Steak)

Just as we were finishing up the Garonmak-sal, they prepared a single serving of Hanwoo Samgak!
I thought the marbling was incredible, but it turns out it was a whopping 2++ Grade 9! Lol.
Its perfectly triangular shape, just like its name, was also quite impressive.
Let's take a moment to listen to the ASMR of the Hanwoo Samgak grilling~~

They told us it tastes even better with scallions, so they placed finely sliced scallions on top of the meat.
The aromatic and crisp texture of the scallions added beautifully to the meat's tender chew, making for a truly wonderful combination.

Half of the Hanwoo Samgak was grilled plain, and the other half was marinated and then grilled.
The plain grilled portion allowed us to savor the meat's natural flavor, while the marinated version had an added savory depth, offering a completely different charm.
It was awesome to enjoy two distinct flavors from a single cut! Lol.
4. Gamasot-bap (Rice Cooked in an Iron Pot)

Right after a bite of the Jjageuli Stew, we immediately ordered...
...and the Gamasotbap (rice cooked in a traditional iron pot) appeared!
Everyone, if you visit Haeyuldame in Jeonju, the Gamasotbap is
an absolute must-order! It's essential!!
Unlike typical pot rice, this rice is cooked with dashi (bonito flake broth),
so the rice itself is an explosion of umami,
and when you enjoy it with the accompanying seaweed, cucumber, and pickled ginger,
and a piece of meat on top, it sends you straight to heaven, I swear! Haha.
5. Perilla Oil Makguksu

Piping hot Perilla Oil Makguksu, with its intoxicating perilla oil aroma!
Pop the egg yolk...
...and top it with green onion kimchi for an even more delicious experience!!
The nutty aroma of perilla oil
and the savory taste of green onion kimchi paired perfectly.
However, the Gamasotbap was so overwhelmingly delicious
that the Gamasotbap alone would have been enough for the meal.
6. Assorted Hanwoo Suyuk

My stomach felt like it was about to burst, but thankfully
they gave us Assorted Hanwoo Suyuk as a complimentary dish!!
Rather than typical suyuk, it was closer to a savory Jangjorim
(braised beef in soy sauce) style, but the meat was incredibly
tender, making it perfect to enjoy with rice.

Overall Review

There's a separate washbasin conveniently located at the 2nd-floor entrance,
making it easy to wash up before and after your meal. From the restaurant's atmosphere
to the staff's kindness, everything was thoroughly satisfying.
You can enjoy various special cuts of pork and beef all in one place,
and the biggest advantage is that they grill the meat for you
from start to finish, so you can
dine comfortably!!
And personally, the Gamasotbap truly stood out in my memory.
