Perfect for a visit after work in the evening!

The 2026 Gyeongbokgung Palace Evening Opening

runs for exactly one month, from September 2nd to October 2nd.

​

Visiting hours are 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM,

and the admission fee is ~$2.

General visitors need to make advance reservations,

but those wearing Hanbok can enter for free without a reservation.

Most importantly, having visited myself,

I found the atmosphere completely different from Gyeongbokgung during the day,

and it was perfect for an autumn date in Seoul!

1. How Long Does the 2026 Gyeongbokgung Evening Opening Run?

The total number of daily visitors is 3,300 people, combining 3,000 online reservations and 300 on-site sales for foreigners.

When I went, it wasn't exactly uncrowded, but Gyeongbokgung Palace is so vast that as you explore, you can still find relatively quiet spots.

📌 One important note!

You might see another event listed on Naver event information as running from

September 2nd to October 24th.

This is not the general Evening Opening, but rather the 'Gyeongbokgung Starlight Night Tour.'

They are different programs, so don't get them confused when booking!

2. How to Reserve Tickets and Find Canceled Tickets for Gyeongbokgung Evening Opening

Tickets for the Gyeongbokgung Palace Night Opening in the second half of 2026

opened on NOL Tickets on August 26th at 10 AM,

on a first-come, first-served basis.

From my personal experience trying to get tickets,

even though I logged in right at the opening time,

there were already 4,000 people ahead of me in the queue, meaning

the competition was incredibly fierce!

The admission fee is ~$2, which is really affordable,

and since it's a night viewing event only available for a limited period each year,

it definitely seemed to be very popular.

But after waiting, I finally succeeded in getting tickets for my desired date!

What I realized while making the reservation myself was

if you want a weekend or a cooler date in late September,

it's better to log in right at the ticket opening time.

How to Get Cancelled Tickets

Even if you missed out on the initial ticketing,

cancelled tickets might become available again,

so you can check for your desired dates frequently.

I'm actually one of those people who cancelled their ticket the day before!

Gyeongbokgung Night Opening tickets

can be cancelled up until 5 PM the day before your visit.

​

I was originally planning to go with the ticket I had purchased,

but as the visit date approached, I suddenly had an idea!

"If it's Gyeongbokgung at night, wouldn't it be much prettier to go wearing hanbok

than just going as is?"

It turns out that those wearing hanbok can enter for free immediately on-site, even without a ticket!

So, the day before my visit, I ended up cancelling my reserved ticket!

I rented a hanbok and went for free. Hehe.

Just like me, people might cancel if you wait a bit,

so don't be discouraged even if you failed to reserve tickets initially.

3. Gyeongbokgung Hanbok Rental & Free Admission

There are so many hanbok rental shops around Gyeongbokgung Palace,

so it's easy to compare them on the spot and rent one.

​

Especially since many rental shops are concentrated around Gyeongbokgung Station and Gwanghwamun,

the route from hanbok rental → Gyeongbokgung Palace is quite convenient.

I rented mine from Hanboknam,

but there are also many other hanbok rental shops like Daehan Hanbok, Seohwa Hanbok, Cham Hanbok,

gathered near Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Perhaps because it's a must-do for foreign tourists,

the shops also had a wide variety of hanbok, from traditional to more elaborate themed hanbok,

available.

I didn't particularly need a flashy themed hanbok,

so I opted for a 2-hour 30-minute rental of a standard hanbok!

The price I paid was ~$8 per person.

4. My Firsthand Experience: Gyeongbokgung Night Opening

Even though I've explored Gyeongbokgung multiple times during the day,

visiting at night felt like stepping into an entirely new world!

To be honest, I've actually been to the palace itself quite a few times already.

Initially, I thought, “It's just some lights, how much of a difference can that make?”

But once the sun had completely set and I stepped inside,

the atmosphere transformed entirely!

While the daytime offers a grand view of the entire palace and its sprawling surroundings,

nighttime felt like each illuminated building, one by one,

captured my full attention.

What really struck me was that the lighting wasn't overly bright;

instead, it gently highlighted each structure, beautifully preserving the unique serenity

of the ancient palace. It was absolutely stunning!

As I wandered through the grounds, I noticed that while some spots were bustling,

if you ventured a little further in, you'd discover surprisingly quiet areas –

absolutely perfect for a leisurely stroll.

It felt like a wonderful escape, right in the heart of Seoul!

Which Areas are Accessible During Gyeongbokgung's Night Opening?

For the latter half of 2026,

you'll be able to explore incredible areas like

Gwanghwamun → Heungnyemun → Geunjeongjeon →

Sujeongjeon → Gyeonghoeru → Sajeongjeon → Gangnyeongjeon → Gyotaejeon

→ and the Amisan area.

The palace grounds are actually quite vast, so if you plan to take your time,

snap some amazing photos, and soak it all in, I'd recommend allocating

about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours for your visit.

I, too, initially thought it would be just a light stroll,

but once I started walking, I realized there's actually quite a bit of ground to cover!

So, choose comfort over style for your footwear!

If you're donning a beautiful Hanbok, definitely make sure your shoes are

not too uncomfortable. Besides, for women, your long skirt will hide them anyway!

Will There Be Performances at This Year's Gyeongbokgung Night Opening?

For the Gyeongbokgung night viewing in the latter half of 2026,

you won't just be admiring the stunning palace nightscape!

The National Gugak Center's regular performance, <Seeds of Sound>,

will also be presented on a special stage in front of Sujeongjeon.

The performance will take place a total of 15 times, running from September 2nd to October 2nd,

excluding the Chuseok holiday week, and will be held on

Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 PM.

While the performance itself is free, please note that the Gyeongbokgung admission fee of ~$2 is separate!

5. Useful Tips Before Your Visit

​

✅ Recommended to Enter Around 7 PM

→ If you want to take your time and capture plenty of photos, it's best not to enter too late.

​

✅ Check Hanbok Rental Time

→ Make sure your rental time is at least 2 hours and 30 minutes!

Considering the time it takes to choose and change into your Hanbok, as well as travel and return times, it's good to allow plenty of buffer.

​

✅ Gyeonghoeru is the Most Popular Spot

→ It's a top highlight during the night opening, so it gets very crowded. If photos are a priority, we recommend heading to Gyeonghoeru first after entering!

​

✅ Comfortable Shoes are a Must

→ The palace grounds are much larger than they seem, and some areas are dimly lit at night. Even when wearing a Hanbok, comfortable shoes for long walks are highly recommended.

✅ For Performance Ticket Holders, Check 7:30 PM

→ The <Seeds of Sound> performance at Sujeongjeon starts at 7:30 PM, so plan your route to allow for travel time.

✅ Nighttime Viewing Operates Even in Rain

→ However, if you're wearing a Hanbok, your skirt might get wet, so it's a good idea to bring an umbrella or a raincoat.
