Rustic Countryside Getaway in Korea
Gunwi Nature-Like Healing Farm

Is this Switzerland or South Korea?!
The view from 2,300 feet (700m) above sea level was the sole reason I booked this place,
but it turned out to be even better than the photos. I must have taken a hundred videos of this breathtaking landscape!
This isn't just a "countryside-themed" aesthetic stay; it’s a real, rugged rural experience (known as "Chonkance" in Korea). It might not be for everyone due to the basic amenities, but if you love nature, fresh mountain air, and camping, you will be 100% satisfied.

The road up is mostly paved and manageable, but the last 10 minutes before reaching the farm consists of highly winding mountain roads.
Beginner drivers might find it a bit intimidating!
The Nature Room
Gunwi Nature-Like Healing Farm Countryside Stay
The most famous rooms here are "Gureumchae" (Cloud House) and "Haneulchae" (Sky House).
However, neither of those has a private bathroom, so we skipped them
and booked the wooden "Nature Room" (Jayeon-bang) which comes with its own private restroom.

Except for those two, the views from all the other rooms are almost identical. If I visit again, I would definitely choose a room with a private bathroom.
No matter how great the view is, sharing a public restroom in the summer is a dealbreaker for me.

There is no AC—only a fan. Even at 2,300 feet high, when the summer heat climbs past 97°F (36°C), it gets quite hot!
We booked this during the autumn Chuseok holiday hoping for cool breezes, but the daytime was still scorching.

It feels exactly like the cozy, tiny room at your grandparents' countryside house.
Just a simple, rustic room—and that's it! Haha.
The room was clean, and though the private bathroom was small, it was tidy with surprisingly strong water pressure.
Note that you must bring your own bedding, pillows, utensils, and toiletries.
It's best to think of it as a camping trip!

We brought our own camping chairs and tables, but there's a wooden picnic table right outside.
If you don't have gear or want to travel light, you don't really need to pack them.

We lucked out because the adjacent rooms were vacant, giving us a peaceful, quiet healing experience
(a large family group stayed at Gureumchae and gathered in their own yard).
If the place is fully booked, the rooms are quite close to each other, so it might not feel super private.
If privacy is your top priority, Gureumchae and Haneulchae are more secluded.
But remember, they don't have private bathrooms... so there's a trade-off!
Either way, we felt incredibly lucky during our stay! ♥

The panoramic view was truly picture-perfect.
Looking out at the green mountains, floating clouds, and Gunwi Lake, I felt an instant sense of peace.
A cold beer would have been perfect here, but we forgot to buy some!
We made do by mixing traditional Korean rice wine (Cheongha) with ice instead.

We sat out on our chairs, listened to music, read books, and just chatted. Suddenly, a beautiful rainbow appeared right in front of us!
We worried we might get bored with nothing to do, but watching the scenery shift hour by hour made time fly.

Taking a cool shower and stepping out to feel the gentle mountain breeze felt like absolute heaven!
There are no outdoor lights, so it's a good idea to bring your own camping lanterns.
We used a tripod with our phone flashlights, which worked surprisingly well.
The porch itself is quite bright if you leave the indoor room lights on.

Be warned: there are plenty of bugs—moths, ants, and flies.
If you are squeamish about insects, summer might be challenging.
(Bug spray and mosquito coils are absolute essentials!)
No AC, lots of bugs, and plenty of inconveniences...
yet, I already want to come back when the weather gets cooler.
I guess this is the true charm of a rustic "Chonkance" getaway! Haha.

I was worried I wouldn't sleep well on the floor, but I slept like a baby! 😊
I set an alarm for 5:50 AM to catch the sunrise and the sea of clouds.
You can watch the sunrise right from the porch of the Nature Room,
which was absolutely magical.
After the sunrise, we cooked a hearty breakfast and took photos in front of Gureumchae after the guests there checked out.

Tips & What to Pack
There are absolutely no shops or restaurants nearby,
so you must stock up on food and supplies before heading up.
The nearest market is over a 20-minute drive down winding mountain paths.
Our Menu: Dinner: Takeout Shabu-shabu / Late-night snack: Chicken skewers & chips / Breakfast: Sandwiches & salad

Each room has its own designated refrigerator.
For the Nature Room, instead of the shared kitchen fridge, you use the private one located further inside.
The shared kitchen has a sink and microwave (remember to bring your own dish soap and sponge).
Food waste goes in the kitchen bin, and other recyclables can be sorted at the parking lot station.

Gunwi Nature-Like Healing Farm is a place where you truly become one with nature.
If you're looking for a pristine, comfortable luxury resort, you might find this place highly inconvenient.
But if you can embrace a little rustic discomfort as part of the romance of travel, this is a highly recommended spot.
I had such a healing time that I'd love to return in the cool autumn for a 2-night stay.

The most famous rooms, Gureumchae and Haneulchae, offer great privacy but do not have individual bathrooms. On the other hand, the Nature Room is convenient as it has an en-suite bathroom, but if fully booked, the rooms are close together, which may make it feel less private.
There are no commercial facilities around the accommodation, and the nearest supermarket is more than a 20-minute drive away. Since you would have to navigate winding mountain roads to go back out, it is highly recommended to buy plenty of food and snacks before checking in.
Bedding and tableware are not provided at the accommodation, so you need to prepare them yourself as if you were going camping. You must bring all necessary items, including blankets and pillows, as well as tableware, dish soap, and sponges.
There is no air conditioning in the room, only a fan, so it can get very hot during the day. Also, due to the outdoor environment, there are many insects such as moths and ants, so it is essential to bring insect repellent and mosquito coils.
