Hello, it's Yappi!🐰
The weather has been so hot lately,
doesn't your appetite just vanish around lunchtime?
I've totally surrendered to this year's heat...
During times like these, I can't help but crave a bowl of refreshing and tangy Bibim Guksu (Spicy Mixed Noodles)
or a comforting bowl of nutty Perilla Oil Makguksu (Buckwheat Noodles).
When it comes to quintessential summer dishes,
Makguksu definitely takes the crown, wouldn't you agree?!🥰
Recently, my husband and I were on a trip to Seoul,
and we decided to stay in the Jongno area.
As luck would have it, just a 10-minute walk from our accommodation was
Gossi Ne Donghae Makguksu's Jongno Branch.
So, after a good night's sleep, we made a reservation and visited around 1 PM.

🌿 A Serene Hanok Ambiance,
A True Gem Right Next to Insadong Ssamziegil

As we strolled along Insadong Culture Street, admiring the sights,
we easily found it located in the very first building down the alley next to Ssamziegil.
It's also about a 5-minute walk from Anguk Station Exit 6,
making it incredibly accessible.
The restaurant was much larger than I expected,
and I was amazed by its beautiful, serene Hanok-style interior!
For a place of this size in Insadong,
you know the taste is practically guaranteed to be fantastic!

We visited on a Friday for lunch,
and the place was absolutely packed with customers!👍
Not only were there many locals,
but also plenty of international travelers,
and by the time we left, a queue had already formed.
If you're planning a visit,
I highly recommend making a Naver reservation, even if it's late at night!
🥢 A Well-Curated Set for Two
& A Generous Korean Feast

Since we had made a reservation in advance,
we were guided to a window seat with a lovely Hanok ambiance,
and then we looked over the menu.

There were so many delicious Korean dishes we wanted to try,
but after much deliberation, we ordered a perfectly balanced combination!
✅Two-person Set: ~$29
(Perilla Oil Makguksu + Yeolmu Makguksu + Suyuk)
✅Sikhye: ~$3
✅Salad Buckwheat Gimbap: ~$4
I was so bummed that I couldn't enjoy
a refreshing glass of corn dongdongju
because I had a stye in my eye 🥲
but the sweet and savory sikhye made up for it.
While I was exploring the restaurant,
the food was prepared and brought out quickly!

1. Perilla Oil Makguksu

Buckwheat noodles steeped in the fragrant aroma of perilla oil,
served with a separate broth.
Pour in about two swirls of broth,
then mix it gently, and the noodles loosen up beautifully.
A savory umami flavor instantly emerges, and
the seaweed flakes are definitely the 'kick'!
2. Yeolmu Makguksu

This is a chilled makguksu with plenty of yeolmu (young radish kimchi),
offering a refreshingly sweet and tangy taste that's simply superb!
It's a buckwheat noodle dish you can enjoy like naengmyeon,
and when you slurp it down on a hot summer day,
its refreshing taste instantly revitalizes you.
3. Savory 'Suyuk' (Boiled Pork Slices)

Even though this suyuk was part of a set menu,
I was surprised by how thick and generous the portions of meat were!
When you enjoy it with dried radish kimchi
mixed with seasoned dried shredded squid (jinmichae),
the savory flavor is simply unbeatable.

The perfect ratio of fat to lean meat meant it wasn't dry;
it was incredibly tender and soft, making it a perfect harmony with the makguksu.
4. Salad Buckwheat Gimbap

This is a vegan buckwheat gimbap
packed with crispy vegetables!
It's often hard to get enough vegetables while traveling,
but this was clean-tasting and wonderfully satisfying! 👍
Since it's a vegan-friendly option, it's also a fantastic Insadong restaurant
recommendation if you're visiting with companions who have dietary restrictions!
🩷Overall Review & Date Recommendation

Even my husband, who's lived in Seoul for a long time,
tasted it and immediately agreed – this place truly offers
high-quality Korean cuisine.
Enjoying the makguksu and suyuk combination
in a neat and traditional hanok setting
makes it a perfect spot for a Jongno date course.
