Gongmihak
A Cozy, Aesthetic Cafe Experience in the Heart of Hongdae
One of my absolute favorite things to do in Seoul is hunting down gorgeous, hidden-gem cafes in Hongdae.
On my latest outing, I stumbled upon a spot that beautifully blends modern design with traditional Korean elements. It is an absolute dream for both locals and travelers looking for that perfect aesthetic vibe.
With an incredible variety of baked goods, it is also a must-visit destination for pastry lovers. Here is my honest review of my afternoon at Gongmihak!
1. Discovering Gongmihak

Hours of Operation | Daily 11:00 AM - 11:00 PM |
You can find Gongmihak on the 3rd floor of the Kakao Friends Flagship Store, located right outside Exit 8 of Hongdae Entrance Station.
It is the perfect setup: you can browse the adorable character merchandise downstairs and then head up to grab a delicious coffee. Two experiences in one convenient spot!
📍 Gongmihak Mapo Hongdae Branch
3F, Kakao Friends, 162 Yanghwa-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul
📍 Kakao Friends Hongdae Flagship Store
1-3F, Joen Saramdeul Building, 162 Yanghwa-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul

Because the cafe occupies the entire third floor, the space feels incredibly open and offers plenty of seating options.
I loved how the interior designers reinterpreted classic Korean architectural elements with a sleek, modern twist. Visiting on a quiet weekday afternoon allowed me to truly soak in the calm, peaceful atmosphere.

There are even large group tables available, making it easy to find a spot that perfectly fits your party.
2. The Menu

The drink menu features all your classic favorites like americanos, lattes, and fruit smoothies, alongside their signature drink, The Aesthetics of Mapo.
It is a rich mugwort latte that looked incredibly tempting, but since I was planning on ordering a few heavy desserts, I decided to stick with a clean, classic iced americano to balance the sweetness.

Gongmihak could easily double as a full-scale bakery. The display cases are packed with cakes, mocha buns, chestnut bread, pound cakes, and even traditional Korean butter rice cakes!

Everything is beautifully arranged so you can look through all the options before making your final selection at the counter.
3. Taste Test & Review

✔ Americano: ~$4
✔ Tiramisu Cake: ~$6
✔ Shanghai Butter Rice Cake (4pcs): ~$5

Even the glassware here has a unique, artistic touch.
The americano had a wonderfully smooth, nutty base with just a subtle hint of bright acidity, leaving a clean, refreshing finish on the palate.

The tiramisu was light and incredibly velvety. It was perfectly sweetened without being overwhelming, and the cake layers were wonderfully moist without getting soggy.
Pro tip: Take a bite of the tiramisu, follow it immediately with a sip of iced americano, and let it melt in your mouth!

I was really curious about the Shanghai Butter Rice Cake since it has been trending all over social media lately.
It has a fantastic texture—crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Drizzled with condensed milk, it is incredibly rich and sweet. It is definitely worth trying at least once!

However, I personally prefer the subtle, bittersweet balance of a classic tiramisu over super sweet treats, so the butter rice cake wasn't quite my personal favorite.
4. Exclusive Merchandise

Since the cafe is located right inside the Kakao Friends building, they offer exclusive collaboration merchandise that you can't find anywhere else.
There are so many cute items to browse, which adds a fun, interactive element to your cafe visit.

It is a fantastic place to pick up unique souvenirs while enjoying a relaxing afternoon break.

Gongmihak is a beautiful, atmospheric cafe that perfectly captures modern Korean charm.
It is an excellent spot to bring friends to show off Seoul's unique cafe culture, or simply to unwind with a great book and a pastry.
If you are looking for a beautiful, spacious cafe with great vibes in Hongdae, I highly recommend checking out Gongmihak!

The Gongmihak Mapo Hongdae branch is located right in front of Exit 8 of Hongik University Station. The cafe occupies the entire 3rd floor of the Kakao Friends Hongdae Flagship Store building.
It is open daily from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM (23:00). You can visit at the same time every day as there are no designated closed days.
'Mapo's Aesthetics' is Gongmihak's signature drink made with mugwort latte. In addition to regular coffee menus, it is sold to highlight unique Korean characteristics.
The Shanghai butter rice cake is ~$5 for 4 pieces, and the tiramisu cake is ~$6. The Shanghai butter rice cake features a crispy exterior and a moist interior, and is enjoyed by drizzling condensed milk over it.
