Gongju City: Population and Basic Information
📍 Gongju City Hall
Gongju City Hall, 1 Bonghwang-ro, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do
Gongju City, Chungcheongnam-do, is home to just under 100,000 residents, with a population of 99,424. Interestingly, it covers over 10.5% of Chungcheongnam-do’s total area, making it the largest city or county in the province by land size.

Historically, Gongju played a pivotal role in Korean history. During the Samhan period, it was part of Mahan's Burun-guk. More significantly, after the Baekje Kingdom relocated its capital from Wiryeseong to Ungjin (modern-day Gongju) in 475 AD (King Munju's 1st year), it served as the capital for 63 years until the move to Sabi (Buyeo) in 538 AD (King Seong's 16th year). This period cemented Gongju's status as a central hub of the Baekje Kingdom.

After the fall of Baekje, the Tang Dynasty established the Ungjin Commandery. In 670 AD, Silla took control, and in 686 AD (King Sinmun's 6th year), they established Ungcheonju, governing 13 counties and 29 prefectures, maintaining its regional importance. The city was renamed Ongju in 757 AD (King Gyeongdeok's 16th year), and then Gongju in 940 AD (King Taejo's 23rd year). In 983 AD (King Seongjong's 2nd year), it became Gongju-mok, one of the 12 major administrative divisions of the country. It was part of Hanam-do in 993 AD (King Seongjong's 12th year) and was elevated to a 'mok' (major administrative district) again in 1341 AD (King Chunghye's 2nd year), reinforcing its status as a regional center. Fascinating history, isn't it?
