Gongju (공주) is a region renowned for its fantastic Jjamppong (짬뽕) restaurants.
You'll find some Chinese restaurants here that are famous nationwide, and many others proudly carry the title of being among Gongju's top Jjamppong spots.
Yet, the place where I savored the most delicious Jjamppong in Gongju wasn't one of those widely celebrated establishments.

It was Jangpung Jjajang (장풍짜장), a Chinese restaurant in Gongju located right in front of the Na Tae-ju Grass Flower Literature Museum (나태주풀꽃문학관).
I stumbled upon it by chance, and the Jjamppong broth was so incredibly good that I found myself returning just a week later! During my two visits, I tried Jjamppong, Ganjjajang (간짜장), Bokkeumbap (볶음밥), and Mini Tangsuyuk (미니탕수육). Among them, the refreshing and clean Jjamppong, along with the crispy, old-school Tangsuyuk, were definitely my favorites.
Jangpung Jjajang is a Chinese restaurant nestled in Banjuk-dong (반죽동), Gongju.
I first discovered this gem on my third trip to Gongju.
After exploring the Na Tae-ju Grass Flower Literature Museum, a delightful aroma wafted from the Chinese restaurant directly across the street.

Seeing a good number of customers inside, my travel companion and I decided to have dinner there.
Our first visit was around 5:20 PM, and the dining area was already bustling. By the time we left, it was even more packed.

Even a week later, when we revisited around 5:00 PM, the place was just as busy with eager diners!

Our initial order consisted of Jjamppong, Ganjjajang, and Mini Tangsuyuk.
I had read in other reviews that the Jjamppong could be spicy, so I requested it to be made less spicy when ordering.

About 10 minutes after ordering, the Mini Tangsuyuk arrived first. It was the perfect size for two people to share alongside their main dishes.

What truly impressed me was that it wasn't the chewy, glutinous rice Tangsuyuk (찹쌀탕수육) so common these days, but rather the thin, crispy, old-school style Tangsuyuk. I absolutely loved it!

Next came the Jjamppong, and the broth was simply divine!
It was generously packed with seafood like squid and shrimp, and most importantly, it wasn't overly oily, making the broth incredibly refreshing and clean-tasting.

Sometimes, Jjamppong broth can be too greasy, making it heavy to finish. But Jangpung Jjajang's version was never heavy, so I just kept wanting more.

The Ganjjajang was also perfectly stir-fried and incredibly delicious.

All three dishes we tried that day were so good that it felt like we had accidentally stumbled upon a truly authentic Chinese restaurant in Gongju.

Perhaps it was because the Jjamppong was so unforgettable on our first visit, but when we went to see the Gongju National Heritage Night Walk a week later, Jangpung Jjajang immediately came to mind. Even with many other famous Jjamppong places in Gongju I hadn't tried yet, I just craved the Jjamppong from this particular spot again.
So, this time, we ordered Chadolbagi Jjamppong (차돌박이짬뽕), Bokkeumbap, and Mini Tangsuyuk.

This time, I didn't ask for the Jjamppong spice level to be adjusted, and it tasted pretty similar to the last. It was just the right amount of delicious spice! It seems it's not inherently very spicy to begin with. (Perhaps the previous reviewers who mentioned it being spicy aren't big fans of heat?)
Of course, spice tolerance is personal, so if you're sensitive to spicy food, I'd still recommend asking for it less spicy when you order.

And that broth taste that I fell in love with on the first visit!
The Chadolbagi Jjamppong had a slightly richer flavor than the regular Jjamppong, and it was equally delicious!

The Mini Tangsuyuk was still as tasty as ever.

However, the Bokkeumbap we ordered this time was rather ordinary.

It wasn't bad, but it just didn't leave as strong an impression as the Jjamppong or Ganjjajang.
My husband and I are both completely hooked on the Jjamppong, so we decided that on our next visit, we'll just order two bowls of Jjamppong!
📍 Jangpung Jjajang
1st Floor, 94 Bonghwang-ro, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do
Among the dishes I personally tried at Jangpung Jjajang, the Chinese restaurant in Gongju, the Jjamppong is undeniably my top recommendation.
Both the less oily, refreshing Jjamppong and the rich Chadolbagi Jjamppong were absolutely delicious.
And if you appreciate thin, crispy, old-school Tangsuyuk, I'd highly suggest the Mini Tangsuyuk. The Ganjjajang was also a fantastic traditional-style dish.

While there is some parking available directly in front of the restaurant, the number of spots is limited. I recommend using a nearby public parking lot.
Gongju boasts many famous Jjamppong restaurants like Donghaewon (동해원), Jangsunru (장순루), and Jinheunggak (진흥각).
I haven't had the chance to visit those well-known places yet, so I can't directly compare the flavors. However, I can confidently say that Jangpung Jjajang's Jjamppong is truly delicious, even if it's not as widely famous as the others.
