What is Jangneung?

Jangneung, located in Pungmu-dong, Gimpo, is one of the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.

It houses the tombs of Prince Jeongwon (posthumously honored as King Wonjong), the biological father of Joseon's 16th monarch, King Injo, and his wife, Queen Inheon (Lady Gu).

As part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty,

it's a crucial historical site for understanding royal burial customs and the ceremonial culture of the Joseon era.

If you grew up in Gimpo in the 90s,

chances are Jangneung was a familiar spot for elementary school field trips.

It was so familiar that I rarely visited outside of school outings, but I noticed some changes this time!

Back then, we could roam more freely. Now, with more regulations in place, I noticed things I hadn't before.

While there are both a 'Hyangno' (spirit path) and an 'Eoro' (royal path) leading to the tomb,

visitors are now directed to walk along the Eoro.

The biggest change for me was realizing you can't get as close to the tomb itself anymore.

I distinctly remember playing near the royal mound with friends during school trips –

I even thought stepping on the grass was part of our 'volunteer work' back then??

It was a long time ago, so I could be mistaken....

Now, access is restricted.

But it makes sense – limiting access is better for preservation, right?

Oh, how time flies!

After visiting the tomb, you can also explore the Jangneung Jaesil (ritual house), which is worth a look.

But honestly, the highlight for me was the History Museum.

This museum is conveniently located in the building you'll see right after scanning your QR code at the entrance.

To be frank, it's not a huge space, which is a slight shame, but the content packed within is incredibly rich and engaging.

Since Jangneung is a royal tomb,

the museum provides excellent explanations about the distribution of Joseon Dynasty royal tombs and their significance.

You can see what surrounds the royal mounds, and there are even interactive displays with movable sculptures,

allowing kids to learn about the layout and locations while having fun, almost like solving a puzzle.

They'll surely enjoy it!

For me, visiting the History Museum first was a great idea.

It was rewarding to see the stone statues and their arrangements in person, even from a distance,

after learning about them beforehand. I love putting new knowledge to immediate use!

The Jangneung History Museum also offers books to browse,

videos to watch, and even some interactive games to make learning fun!

What's more, in keeping with our global society,

the explanations about the royal tombs in the museum are also available in English.

This makes it a fantastic spot for English speakers to learn, or even for practicing English if you're a local, and an excellent place to bring international friends!

While seeing a UNESCO World Heritage site was incredible, I particularly enjoyed the beautiful walking path to the tomb.

And the Jangneung History Museum, right after you enter,

was a true bonus, allowing for a deeper understanding of the royal tomb before even reaching it.
