If you are looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a slower, more authentic slice of local Korean island life, this is the perfect day trip. In this guide, I will walk you through everything you need to know: where to catch the boat, ferry timetables, ticket pricing, on-site booking tips, motion sickness advice, and my personal experience exploring the island on foot.

Ferries to Gapado Island depart exclusively from Unjin Port Passenger Ferry Terminal, situated in the southwestern corner of Jeju.

Keep in mind that ticket sales and boarding registration close strictly 20 minutes before departure. To avoid any last-minute rush, I highly recommend arriving at the terminal at least 1 hour before your desired departure time!

When you purchase your ticket to Gapado, your departure and return times are automatically paired together.

This means your return vessel is pre-assigned, giving you approximately 2 hours of exploration time on the island, which is the perfect amount of time to experience its charm without feeling rushed.

Currently, the regular ferry to Gapado Island does not support online reservations for international tourists. You must purchase your tickets in person at Unjin Port on the day of travel.

How to buy tickets on-site:

Head inside the Unjin Port Passenger Terminal to get started.

During weekends or peak spring seasons, the terminal can get incredibly busy, so give yourself plenty of buffer time.

Make sure to fill out the boarding declaration form at the central tables first, and then queue up at the ticket counter. Remember, every single person in your group must present a physical passport or ID card to purchase tickets!

At just 10 minutes long, the ferry ride to Gapado is incredibly brief. However, if you are prone to motion sickness, even 10 minutes can feel like an eternity on choppy waters.

On the day I visited, the waves were quite active, and I felt a bit of motion sickness coming on shortly after we left the harbor.

I found that keeping my eyes fixed on the horizon and looking at Mt. Sanbangsan in the distance helped soothe my stomach. Before I knew it, we had arrived.

The ferry does have motion sickness bags available at the front of the cabin, but if you struggle with seasickness, taking a quick travel pill 30 minutes before departure is highly recommended.

Many travelers assume that a rainy day automatically means the ferry is cancelled, but that is actually a myth!

Light rain usually does not affect operations. Instead, cancellations are decided by wind speeds and wave conditions.

In Jeju, even if the sky looks perfectly blue and clear, high wind warnings or strong undercurrents can ground the ferries. Always double-check before making the drive to Unjin Port.

Right by the pier in Gapado, you will find several shops offering bicycle rentals.

Because the island is exceptionally flat, renting a bike is a fantastic, breezy way to zip around and see the major sights quickly.

However, if you do not plan on sitting in a café for hours, the 2-hour stay limit is actually more than enough time to explore the entire island comfortably on foot.

My partner and I opted to skip the bikes and explore on foot this time.

We set off to collect stamps for the Jeju National Heritage Stamp Tour, visiting the Somang (Wish) Observatory and the historic Gapado Altar, which was featured in the popular Netflix K-drama Our Blues.

Taking our time to enjoy the sea breeze, stop for photos, and listen to the waves allowed us to soak in the tranquil, slow-paced atmosphere of the island far better than we would have on a bicycle.

If you enjoy walking, do not hesitate to skip the wheels. Exploring on foot is incredibly therapeutic here.

Gapado is not about flashy tourist attractions; it is about slow walking, quiet ocean views, and finding space to breathe. The true highlight of our trip was simply basking in that untouched, peaceful atmosphere.
