Dalbit Jumak Jeju Review: Authentic Local Tavern
Skip the usual black pork and discover Dalbit Jumak, a cozy local tavern near Jeju Dream Tower serving crispy deep-fried anchovies and local makgeolli.
Checked into the Jeju Dream Tower or a hotel in the bustling Yeon-dong neighborhood, and looking for an authentic local spot without traveling too far?
While most travelers instinctively head for black pork or raw fish on their first night, those craving a taste of real local drinking culture should head to Nohyung-dong for a traditional Korean tavern (jumak) experience.
Today, I’m introducing Dalbit Jumak (Moonlight Tavern). It is conveniently located just a 15-minute walk (about 0.7 miles) from Jeju Dream Tower and a quick 12-minute taxi ride from Jeju International Airport.
Here, you can pair Jeju's local specialty, mel-twigim (deep-fried giant anchovies), with ice-cold local makgeolli (rice wine).
An Authentic Nohyung-dong Tavern Near Jeju Dream Tower

Dalbit Jumak is situated right in the heart of Nohyung-dong, one of Shin-Jeju's prime commercial districts.
Its close proximity to major hotels and the airport makes it an incredibly convenient spot to wrap up your first or final night on the island without any transit hassle.

Step inside, and you'll find a cozy, intimate layout. Unlike noisy franchise pubs, each table here is separated by traditional bamboo roll-up blinds. This creates a comfortable, semi-private space perfect for couples or close friends to chat.
If you prefer the warm, rustic atmosphere of a traditional Korean tavern over loud, modern bars, this is exactly where you want to be.
Looking for True Jeju Pub Grub? Try Mel-Twigim and Makgeolli
One of Jeju’s most iconic local ingredients is mel, which is the Jeju dialect for large anchovies.
While you might associate anchovies with tiny dried garnishes, Jeju's mel are plump, meaty, and used in local soups, stews, and condiments. To be honest, during my years living in Jeju, I was always hesitant to order mel-twigim (fried anchovies) because of how they looked. But before relocating away from the island, I knew I couldn't leave without finally trying this legendary local dish. That's what brought me to Dalbit Jumak in Nohyung-dong.
The star of the show here is undoubtedly the crispy, golden-brown mel-twigim.

Shortly after ordering, we were served a humble yet comforting spread of side dishes: seasoned bean sprouts, radish kimchi, local greens, and a warm bowl of siraegiguk (dried radish green soup).

It felt like a cozy home-cooked meal, perfect for warming up the stomach before the drinks arrived. The open kitchen also lets you peek at the chef freshly frying your order.

Our mel-twigim arrived piping hot after about 15 minutes. Honestly, I was shocked by the size—these anchovies are huge! Because they are fried whole, every bite is incredibly rich and savory. The batter is light and crispy, and the soft bones inside actually add a delightful nutty crunch rather than being a nuisance. They make the dish taste even more savory!
If you want to experience authentic island food culture beyond the standard tourist spots, this dish will not disappoint. Pair it with a bowl of refreshing Jeju Makgeolli, which has a subtle sweetness and crisp carbonation, for absolute perfection.

Since fried food is always best fresh out of the fryer, I'd recommend visiting with a group of 3 to 4 friends. That way, you can share a plate of mel-twigim while ordering other local dishes to try together.
Other Local Specialties to Try

Beyond the fried anchovies, Dalbit Jumak offers a variety of dishes showcasing fresh seafood from Chuja Island, a remote archipelago off the coast of Jeju. These regional dishes are perfect for expanding your culinary horizons!
