What is Sungsimdang?
Sungsimdang began as a humble steamed bun shop in front of Daejeon Station back in 1956. Today, it has grown into a renowned bakery famous for its incredible value and is considered a must-visit spot for anyone traveling to Daejeon.
🍞Sungsimdang Daejeon Station is Perfect for:
✔️ Travelers looking to buy bread as souvenirs before heading home.
✔️ Those who don't have time to visit the main Sungsimdang branch.
✔️ Anyone specifically craving Twigim Soboro, rather than cakes, yakisoba bread, or sandwiches.
Sungsimdang Daejeon Station: Our Top Bread Picks
1. Twigim Soboro (Original, Matcha, Sweet Potato)
While the "Siru Cake" might be trending at Sungsimdang these days, the Twigim Soboro was, and still is, their original superstar. It's a true classic!
Personally, I prefer the Twigim Soboro over the famous Strawberry Siru Cake, which is why I wholeheartedly recommend it as a must-buy. Between the flavors, the Original is definitely my favorite.
2. Bucheppang (Chive Bread)
Bucheppang is another incredibly popular bread alongside Twigim Soboro. While Twigim Soboro undeniably holds the top spot for me, you'd be missing out if you didn't grab a Bucheppang too. It's a unique savory treat worth trying!
Where to Find Sungsimdang at Daejeon Station
You'll find Sungsimdang on the second floor of Daejeon Station. Just head towards the station building from Exit 4, and you can't miss it!
Honestly, Sungsimdang at Daejeon Station offers a surprisingly wide array of breads, including almost all the must-try items you'd expect from the main branch. So, if you're short on time and can't make it to the flagship store, the station branch is a fantastic alternative.
For popular items like Twigim Soboro, there's often a separate purchase area. If you're only looking to grab these iconic fried pastries, just follow the signs!
When I visited around 8:00 AM, the inside of the bakery was bustling, making it a bit tough to browse, but there wasn't a long line for checkout. I thought the evening might be similar, so I planned to pick up Twigim Soboro and Bucheppang just before my train around 6:00-7:00 PM.
However, when I returned, the queue was incredibly long! I ended up having to skip my Twigim Soboro and Bucheppang. So, if you prefer not to carry your bread around all day and plan to buy it at the station, I highly recommend arriving well before your train's departure time, especially in the late afternoon or evening.
✔︎ Sungsimdang Daejeon Station: Final Thoughts
If you're taking a train for your Daejeon day trip and planning to buy a set of Twigim Soboro, I highly recommend purchasing them at Daejeon Station by arriving early for your train, rather than buying them at the main branch and carrying them around all day. It'll save you a lot of hassle!
