Daejeon in September: Must-Visit Spots
Daejeon's Gyochon-dong and Wonnae-dong Sanjangsan Mountain Lycoris (Spider Lily) Clusters
Did you know that Daejeon also boasts stunning clusters of Lycoris (Spider Lilies)? Many travelers might only think of famous spots like Gyeongju, Gochang, or Gimcheon when it comes to these beautiful blooms. But here's a secret: Daejeon has its own hidden gems where a crimson wave of Lycoris flowers unfurls every autumn! You'll find them along the main road in Gyochon-dong, Yuseong-gu, and around Sanjangsan Mountain in Wonnae-dong. Every mid-September, the mountain paths transform into a vibrant red carpet of Lycoris, creating a breathtaking sight that will leave you in awe with every step. The subtle, radiant red hues make it a perfect spot for capturing 'insta-worthy' life shots! What's more, this Daejeon autumn gem is completely free to enter and easily accessible, making it a stress-free and delightful experience. It's ideal for a leisurely stroll and, being not far from the city center, it's perfect for a spontaneous day trip. However, for those visiting Sanjangsan Mountain with young children, please note that the path is narrow and unpaved, making it challenging for wheelchairs or strollers.

4. My Visit Review & Hot Tips
The Lycoris radiata, or Red Spider Lily, is a unique flower because its leaves and blossoms appear separately.
In spring, the leaves grow and then disappear.
Then, in autumn, only the stalks emerge, blooming with vibrant red flowers.
This makes them feel even more mysterious and special.

The Flower Meaning of Lycoris radiata:
Unattainable Love
That's why it's also called 'Sanghwasa' (相思花), or 'Flower of Mutual Longing'.
The way its leaves and blossoms never meet
is said to resemble a deep longing or yearning,
giving it this poignant name.

Personally, I recommend the Gyojeon-dong cluster
for its excellent accessibility!

The Gyojeon-dong cluster of Lycoris radiata
blooms beautifully along the roadside,
stretching from Mimeid Apartment
all the way to Jinjam Intersection.
The section between Mimate Apartment and the adjacent J-Park Apartment
boasts the most spectacular blooms.

What's unique about this spot is that
a small hill has formed
between the road and the apartments.
With trees and flowers blooming here,
it's the perfect urban walking path.

There are two paths here:
an upper path and a lower path.
The upper path is a dirt trail, giving you the feeling of walking deep in a forest,
while the lower path is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.

From the upper path, you can admire the Lycoris radiata right up close,
while from the lower path, gazing up at them,
they make a fantastic backdrop for photos.

What's more, you'll find
art installations dotted throughout.
They light up at night,
creating a completely different ambiance.
I visited during the day,
but next time, I'd love to see them lit up in the evening! Haha.

Isn't the rabbit hiding among the Lycoris radiata absolutely adorable?

Another great advantage of this spot is that
it's super easy for pedestrians to visit.
There's a bus stop right in front!
As soon as you get off,
the Lycoris radiata unfold right before your eyes,
making for a really convenient visit.

From the Gyojeon-dong Lycoris radiata cluster
to Sanjangsan Mountain in Wonnae-dong
it takes 2 minutes by car / 20 minutes on foot (1.5km).
※ You can also take a bus from Mimeid Apartment
and get off at Jinjam Elementary School to transfer or continue your journey.

Wonnae-dong Sanjangsan isn't
a difficult course,
so it's great for a light hike
or just a visit.

From the entrance of Sanjangsan
to the cluster of Lycoris flowers,
you can arrive in about 15-20 minutes of climbing,
making it the perfect distance to enjoy the autumn scenery
with a leisurely walk.
