Most free water playgrounds in Daejeon
operate by setting up temporary pools
in urban parks or sports complexes.
But the Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area Water Playground
is a little different.
As you venture past the foot spa and valley nestled under lush trees,
and beyond the stone pagoda plaza, deep within the forest,
a blue outdoor water playground emerges.
The tree shade extends all the way around the pool,
and there were even wooden platforms (pyeongsang) and rest areas
for guardians to relax while their children played in the water.
From operating hours and how to use it,
to the pool's ambiance, the valley and foot spa,
and even the changing rooms and restrooms –
I'm excited to share everything I discovered on site.

2. Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area Water Playground Location & Parking |

The Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area
is located on the outskirts of Daejeon.
It's about a 5-minute drive from Namdaejeon IC (Interchange).
Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area Parking Lot 1 - Free
While there's free parking,
it can get full on weekends,
so you might have to park a bit further away and walk.
After parking your car,
you'll need to cross the bridge and walk into the forest recreation area
for about 10 minutes.
The water playground isn't built
right in front of the parking lot, and if you pack
swimsuits, tubes, and picnic mats, you can end up with quite a bit of luggage.
After walking it myself,
I realized that a wagon would make transporting kids and water play gear
all at once so much easier.
However, some sections are gravel or dirt paths,
so if your wagon has small wheels,
it might be a little inconvenient.
A product with larger,
sturdier wheels would be a better fit.

3. Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area Water Playground Water Playground Layout in the Forest |
The Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area Water Playground
is tucked away deep within a forest surrounded by dense trees,
making it feel quite cool even in the middle of summer.
Last year, there were several pools available both up and down,
but when I visited in 2026,
only the two upper pools were open.
Since the number of pools was reduced,
visitors gathered in one spot,
making it a bit crowded.
You take off your shoes above the entrance,
then walk barefoot down the stairs
to enter the water playground.
The water playground was operating with two pools
of different depths.
The upper pool was about hip to waist deep for adults,
while the lower pool was knee-deep,
so there were many young children in the lower section.
On both sides, there are spots where you can
sit and rest for a bit in between playing in the water,
and you can also watch the kids play from above.
What makes Sangsodong Forest Bathing Area
truly special is
its water temperature!
Perhaps because it uses valley water,
it was surprisingly cold
from the moment I dipped my feet in.
When I first plunged in, it felt like my whole body was freezing,
but after a moment of adjustment,
it was cool enough to make me forget the summer heat.
With deep tree shade overhead,
even on a hot day, you might actually feel cold
once you step out of the water!
Make sure to bring a large towel or beach towel,
and a light cover-up to wear over your wet swimsuit.
I only brought a regular towel,
and it got soaked quickly..
Since the valley water is so cold,
I highly recommend bringing at least
one large beach towel.

From the pool walls,
streams of water fell,
allowing children to play by showering themselves as if under a waterfall,
It was also great for riding tubes
or enjoying water play with a guardian.
It might not be a water park with flashy rides,
but the biggest charm of Sangsodong Recreational Forest's water play area was the ability to cool off and play in the forest's cold valley stream,
even in the middle of summer.
4. Sangsodong Recreational Forest Water Play Area: Where are the Best Shady Spots? |
Around the water play area,
you'll find pavilions, pyeongsang (flat wooden decks),
and tent shelters available.
Most of the surrounding area is under tree shade,
meaning you get very little direct sun exposure,
and you can easily keep an eye on the children playing.
After looking around myself, the most popular spots were indeed the pyeongsang.
Many families rush
to claim these spots first.
If all the pyeongsang are taken,
the tent shelters are also a great option.
They come equipped with chairs and tables,
perfect for a quick rest or organizing your belongings.
On weekends, the best spots tend to fill up quickly after 10 AM,
so if you're hoping for a prime location,
I recommend arriving a bit earlier.
5. Sangsodong Recreational Forest Water Play Area: Amenities |
Men's and Women's Changing Rooms / Restrooms
Around the water play area,
men's and women's changing rooms are available,
making it convenient to change out of wet clothes.
Restrooms are also conveniently located right next door,
so it wasn't inconvenient to use them
even with children.
What's more,
it was great that you could rinse off any dirt from your feet
at the entrance after playing in the water.
6. Sangsodong Recreational Forest Water Play Area: Don't Miss the Valley Stream and Foot Bath! |
Another wonderful charm of Sangsodong Recreational Forest
is that it offers more than just the water play area.
Before you even enter the main water play area,
you'll find a natural valley stream and a foot bath zone waiting for you.
The valley stream isn't very deep,
making it perfect for kids to splash and play,
and also a lovely spot to relax for a while
under the cool forest shade.
The foot bath area, nestled under the metasequoia trees,
was especially popular with adults.
With cool stream water continuously flowing,
just dipping your feet in for a moment
made the heat quickly dissipate.
I tried dipping my feet in too, and
it was much colder than I expected!
Perhaps because it's stream water,
it was enough to make me flinch the moment I put my feet in,
and I couldn't last long, so I quickly pulled my feet out.
Even though it was a scorching summer day, my feet felt so icy! ;;
7. Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area Water Park Don't Miss the Forest Playground! |
It's a place you'd be sad to
leave right after finishing your water play.
Inside the forest recreation area,
there's also a Net Adventure and a Forest Playground.
With net play, trampolines, zip lines, and more,
facilities are prepared for children to run around and play,
so they keep playing for a long time
even after their water activities.
However, rather than using it immediately
with wet clothes and bare feet,
it's safer to wipe yourself dry,
change into dry clothes, and put on shoes
before playing.
8. Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area Water Park Stone Tower Plaza & Forest Library |
The exotic Stone Tower Plaza
is one of the must-visit spots at Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area,
and is even called Korea's Angkor Wat!
In summer, with sunlight filtering through the dense trees,
the stone towers and lush green forest create
an even more mystical landscape.
It's also perfect for a leisurely stroll after water play
and taking memorable photos.
Also, be sure to visit the newly established
Forest Library (Sangso-dong Relaxation Center)
at Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area.
When you're tired from outdoor activities
or want to escape the heat for a bit,
you can relax comfortably indoors, reading a book.
9. Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area Water Park What to Bring |
✔️ Wagon (approx. 10-minute walk from parking lot to water park) ✔️ Swimsuit or rash guard, swimming cap ✔️ 2 or more large towels (The stream water is cold, so these are more useful than regular towels.) The water, especially, is stream water and much colder than you might expect.
Children can get cold quickly,
so we highly recommend bringing

The Sangso-dong Forest Recreation Area Water Park will operate from Thursday, July 23rd to Sunday, August 16th, 2026. It is closed every Monday.
The water park operates from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM. It is divided into three sessions: 1st session (10:00 AM - 12:00 PM), 2nd session (1:00 PM - 3:00 PM), and 3rd session (3:30 PM - 5:30 PM). Each session runs for 50 minutes, followed by a 10-minute inspection period.
When visited in 2026, only the two upper pools were open. The upper pools were about hip-to-waist deep for adults, while the lower pool was knee-deep.
The stream water is very cold, so it's a good idea to bring a large towel or beach towel and a thin outer layer to wear over your wet body. Since it's about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the water park, a wagon would be convenient if you have a lot of luggage.
The flat platform spots around the water park are the most popular. On weekends, most good spots are taken after 10:00 AM, so it's recommended to visit a bit earlier if you want a prime location.
