Looking for a fun indoor escape with kids during the summer monsoon season? If you're in Daejeon and want to make unforgettable memories, don't miss the annual Firefly Light Experience! It's a rare, once-a-year event where you can watch thousands of live fireflies glow in the dark up close. Best of all, admission is completely free!

1. Daejeon Firefly Light Experience

The Daejeon Insect Ecology Center features around 40,000 fireflies (Luciola lateralis) bred and raised right here at the facility. Rather than just a static display, you'll step into a dark, specially designed exhibition room where you can watch these magical insects flicker and glow. Kids find it absolutely mesmerizing!

2. The Perfect Rainy Day Indoor Outing for Families

Beyond the fireflies, the Daejeon Insect Ecology Center is home to 31 insect species (around 90,000 individual bugs!) and 15 different animal species. Once you step inside, the kids will be so captivated they'll lose track of time.

It's not just a passive museum—it's highly interactive. Kids can actually touch and feel some of the creatures, making it a fantastic hands-on educational experience.

Plus, it's fully air-conditioned, making it the perfect sanctuary during rainy monsoon days or the sweltering heat of mid-summer. It's highly recommended as a top indoor destination in Daejeon!

Pro Parking Tip
Most visitors head straight to the main Hanbat Arboretum parking lot, but here is a local secret: park in the lot behind the Daejeon Yeonjeong Korean Traditional Music Center. It is significantly closer to the Insect Ecology Center entrance. Walking in the intense summer heat is no joke, so save your energy and park closer!
3. Combine with Hanbat Arboretum on a Sunny Day!

If the weather clears up before or after your firefly experience, take a stroll through the neighboring Hanbat Arboretum. Walking along the peaceful forest paths is a wonderful way to connect with nature. You can even sign up for the popular Hanbat Arboretum Forest Program, which is a fantastic outdoor learning experience for children.
