Daejeon Geological Museum
The Geological Museum of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources
is the only geological museum in Korea,
making it a place where you can easily grasp Earth's history.
To help us understand the Earth as it is today,
it collects, researches, and exhibits a diverse range of geological specimens,
including rocks, minerals, and fossils.
What kind of rocks make up the neighborhood we live in?
What resources are rocks used for?
How have various organisms evolved on this land?
It's a place where you can easily and enjoyably learn the answers to these and many other fascinating questions.
At the Geological Museum, in addition to the exhibition halls,
they also run an experience center and experiential education programs,
and offer docent-led exhibition tours.

The Daejeon Geological Museum is divided into two floors:
1st Floor: Central Hall, Exhibition Hall 1, Geoscience Exploration Room, Outdoor Exhibition Area, Souvenir Shop, Information Desk
2nd Floor: Exhibition Hall 2, Audiovisual Room, Geoscience Education Room

Giant Dinosaur Specimens & Globe
As soon as you step into the museum, you're greeted by massive dinosaur models and a giant globe.
Not just the kids, but even I was completely awestruck by their sheer size!
The Central Hall, themed around dinosaurs,
showcases skeletons of Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, and other dinosaurs,
along with various dinosaur specimens like dinosaur eggs.
You can also explore the precisely recreated submarine topography of the Korean Peninsula and surrounding waters
on Korea's largest globe, which measures 7 meters in diameter.
While many of the dinosaur fossils on display are replicas,
the skeletons of Maiasaura and Psittacosaurus
are exhibited as authentic specimens.
In front of each exhibition hall, you'll find activity sheets, so...
Exploring them together makes the visit even more insightful.

A wide array of exhibits awaits, covering everything from the formation of Earth to fascinating fossils and groundbreaking geological exploration.

Through the incredible SOS (Science On a Sphere) (spherical screen),
you can immerse yourself in captivating 3D videos showcasing various Earth phenomena like continental drift, dynamic weather patterns, powerful volcanoes, and dramatic earthquakes –
it was truly the most fascinating experience!
Here, you'll delve into the history of life's evolution through a collection of rare fossils and reconstruction models, gathered from both domestic and international sites.
You can also discover how geological maps are created through meticulous exploration and understand the intricate processes of marine geophysical surveys.
The interactive experiences with
folds, and normal and reverse faults were an absolute blast –
perfect for kids (and adults!) to test their strength and get hands-on with geology! Haha.
As you ascend the staircase to the second floor,
prepare to be greeted by an impressive display of diverse skeletal models of Mesozoic marine
predatory fish.
Don't they look a little intimidating? Haha.
Or is it just me? Lol.
While the museum's interior might not be as vast as you'd imagine,
it's actually the perfect size for a leisurely, in-depth exploration with your kids.
Each exhibit features meticulously detailed explanations, making it wonderfully easy to take your time and truly soak it all in.
I especially loved being able to answer every single one of my child's questions as they popped up – it was incredibly satisfying!

Rocks, Geological Structures, Minerals
Exhibition Hall 2 is a journey into the world of
rocks, geological structures, and minerals.
Here, you'll delve into the classification, formation locations,
and dating methods of various rocks commonly found around us.
You'll also uncover the secrets of geological structures preserved in rocks, like folds and faults,
and learn about the fascinating sites where they are beautifully preserved.
The hall proudly showcases the diverse types and uses of minerals—the very particles that make up rocks—
as well as dazzling gemstones and their raw forms.
On the day of my visit, some areas were temporarily restricted due to exciting exhibition updates.
The sparkling mineral samples were particularly eye-catching,
and seeing such vibrantly colored minerals,
it's truly mind-blowing that these are created by nature!
Being able to explore various types of rocks and minerals up close
was an incredibly fascinating experience.
In particular, the enormous amethyst displayed right in the center was so beautiful, I just had to covet it! LOL
The mineral that truly captivated me was the fluorescent mineral.
Fluorescent minerals are those that glow under ultraviolet, X-ray, or cathode ray exposure.
Isn't it absolutely stunning how an ordinary rock transforms into a vividly glowing mineral? So pretty, right? 😉
Beyond all that, something else that truly captured the kids' attention was this! Haha!
They could actually see the blocks from the popular Minecraft game in real life!
"Oh wow, so this is what it looks like in real life!"
It was a truly fun exhibition where children could learn and discover naturally,
making it incredibly engaging for everyone.
The ultimate highlight of the exhibition was the car driving experience zone!
This interactive experience lets you drive a car
while solving puzzles along the way.
You'll need to answer correctly to drive all the way to the end,
so it's definitely important to pay close attention during your visit! 😉

The Geological Science Education Room is an incredible
**experiential learning space** where you can get up close and personal with major rocks found in Korea, plus fascinating mineral samples and thin sections from both home and abroad.
You can **directly observe** them with your own eyes or zoom in with a microscope – how cool is that?
Unfortunately, on the day of my visit, it wasn't open, so I couldn't go inside. What a shame! :)
These photos are actually from a previous adventure when I visited with my kids.
You can peer through microscopes to observe fascinating rocks like granite and basalt,
and even better, you can get hands-on and directly touch and observe a whole array of different minerals and rocks.
Being able to touch and experience them directly is just fantastic for sparking and satisfying kids' curiosity!
Outdoor Exhibition Area
Right in the museum's front yard, the Outdoor Exhibition Area showcases
some truly impressive geological formations, like the Pohang columnar joints, Jeju Island basalt, and even Gangwon-do limestone!
It was such an engaging experience to be able to see and touch so many different minerals firsthand!
Even on chilly days,
if the sun is shining warmly,
the spacious lawn is absolutely perfect for kids to run around and play!

The Daejeon Geological Museum operates from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is closed every Monday.
Admission to the Daejeon Geological Museum is free. There is a spacious free parking lot available in front of the museum for visitors' convenience.
Docent-led exhibition tours are available from Wednesday to Friday at 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM. On weekends (Saturday and Sunday), they are available at 10:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 3:30 PM.
In Exhibition Hall 2, there is an exhibit where you can see actual blocks from the Minecraft game. Additionally, there's an interactive space where children can drive a car and solve problems, allowing them to review what they've learned while having fun.
The museum interior is designed to be accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. However, pets are not allowed, and bringing in outside food is also prohibited.
