It was so sad, tears just flowed.
After watching the movie, the importance of safety really hit home even more.
So!
To celebrate the school holidays, I signed up for the 119 Citizen Safety Experience Center with my kids.
It's a place where you can learn how to respond to various disaster situations
through education and hands-on experience.
It was a beneficial experience for the children,
but I especially highly recommend it for adults too.

The Daejeon 119 Citizen Safety Experience Center is located in Boksu-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, at Jeongnim-gogae,
behind the Daejeon Seobu Fire Station.
When I first used navigation to visit, it led me to the Seobu Fire Station.
Following the sign, you go down the hill
and turn right.
The 119 Citizen Safety Experience Center is located behind it.
There's a small sign, so you can find it easily.
In front of the center, there's a free parking lot,
and since it operates on an advance reservation system,
there's no rush of visitors, so parking is not difficult.

Disaster situations can happen anywhere, anytime in our lives.
That's why I believe it's important to prepare and practice in advance.
The 119 Citizen Safety Experience Center is a space where citizens can learn and experience how to respond to various disaster situations, such as fires,
by learning and experiencing response methods,
and it is a place to learn safety through experience.
✅ How to Use the 119 Citizen Safety Experience Center
You can experience the 119 Citizen Safety Experience Center through 100% online reservation.
Reservations can be made through the Daejeon City OK Reservation Service website.

9:30 AM ~ 10:30 AM
1:30 PM ~ 3:30 PM
✔Children under 6 are not permitted to enter the experience facility.
✔Children of elementary school age or younger must be accompanied by a guardian.
✔When making a reservation, group leaders and guardians must also be included in the number of participants.
✔Some experiences may be restricted if wearing skirts, high heels, or slippers.
✔Certificates of completion can only be printed online for those who completed the experience and whose names were uploaded during reservation.
✔Late arrivals may result in some experiences being omitted.
When I made my reservation, I also applied for a Fire Safety Experience Certificate of Completion.
Upon arrival, the firefighters kindly guided us,
I told them the name of the person who made the reservation,
and if a certificate of completion was requested, a signature was required.
Later, the certificate can be printed online.
Experiences at the 119 Citizen Safety Experience Center take place on the basement level, and the 1st and 2nd floors.
The experiences vary slightly depending on the visit date,
and on the day I visited,
2F Earthquake Experience, Escape Descender Experience, Escape Slide Experience
1st Floor Fire Evacuation Experience, First Aid Experience (CPR)
were conducted!
On the 1st floor, you'll find a lounge, water dispenser, separate men's and women's restrooms, and other handy convenience facilities.
First off, we headed up to the 2nd floor auditorium where our initial safety lesson took place.
The reservation capacity is 80 people, but surprisingly, only about 20 actually showed up.
It's genuinely tough to snag a reservation for this program...
So, if you can't make it, it would be wonderful if you could at least cancel your reservation to free up spots!
On one side of the experience hall, there was a fantastic setup for practicing emergency escapes, featuring an emergency escape descender (Wanggwan-gi), rescue chute, escape slide, and even rock climbing!
Before diving into the descender experience, we first received a detailed explanation on how to use the emergency descender.
I had always been so curious about the emergency descenders installed in apartments and buildings,
wondering how they actually worked.
This was such an incredibly useful learning session!
As soon as the explanation wrapped up, we immediately moved on to the emergency escape experience!
Participants in the experience must first put on their safety gear (helmet, safety belt) before heading up to the 2nd floor to begin the activity.
[Emergency Descender Experience]
Both adults and children can participate, and thanks to the amazing firefighters, we were able to complete the experience safely!
Since a variety of experiences are offered, it might not be possible to participate if you're wearing skirts, high heels, or slippers.
So, please make sure to visit in comfortable attire!
[Rescue Chute Experience]
You descend from a high place in an instant, and let me tell you, the kids definitely weren't scared – they confidently took on the experience!
[Earthquake Experience]
After the emergency escape experiences were over, we moved to the adjacent earthquake simulation room.
It's a stark reminder that even our region isn't completely safe from earthquakes anymore.
Kids nowadays receive a lot of education at school and kindergarten,
so they actually know much more than I do as an adult!
Do you see the yellow 'hats' (?) the children are wearing? Aren't they adorable?
Apparently, these are actually protective gear that Japanese children carry with them at all times – how smart is that?
In the earthquake experience, you can directly feel the intense shaking that occurs during an actual earthquake.
One person found it too scary, while another felt like they were on an amusement park ride... The children's reactions were so varied – quite interesting to observe!
With things shaking, objects breaking, and the chaos, I personally found it absolutely terrifying!
The earthquake experience is conducted with two teams;
while one team is experiencing it, the other can take a restroom break or
wait by taking fun photos at the photo zone. Haha!
[Fire Evacuation Experience]
For me, this was truly the most memorable and impactful experience.
Fires can unfortunately strike at any moment, anywhere.
Before this, I only had a rough idea about fire extinguishers,
but thanks to this incredible opportunity, I was able to thoroughly learn about the different types of extinguishers, how to maintain them, and crucially, how to use them effectively.
What's more, I learned essential evacuation methods during a fire,
including how to move safely in a low posture,
and even how to check a door's temperature before opening it.
These are truly practical tips that could make all the difference!
Inside, the Fire Evacuation Experience Zone
offered a simulated experience that felt incredibly close to a real-life emergency.
Navigating the dark, winding corridors,
I found myself truly terrified.
Even without acrid, thick smoke,
fumbling along the walls of an unfamiliar, pitch-black path to escape,
I honestly questioned whether I could remain calm and escape in a genuine emergency...
I wasn't confident at all. It was a humbling moment!;

[Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): A Lifesaving Skill!]
In my opinion, CPR is hands down the most crucial skill anyone can possess to save a life in a real emergency.
The kids, having experienced it numerous times at daycare, kindergarten, and school,
were already quite adept!
They knew exactly what to do!
I, on the other hand, only had a hazy understanding,
so I was thrilled to finally get the chance to learn it properly.
I gained detailed knowledge about the precise location, force, and rhythm for chest compressions,
and even learned how to operate an automated external defibrillator (AED) – truly invaluable skills!
What's more, I got to learn about something many parents, including myself, have likely heard about at some point:
the Heimlich maneuver (abdominal thrusts).
Knowing this means I’ll be much better equipped to handle a choking emergency should it ever arise.
Two hours flew by without me even noticing,
filled with incredibly enriching and truly invaluable learning experiences.
📌 Advance Reservation is a Must! While reservation slots used to open monthly, they now open three months at a time, making it slightly easier to secure a spot. However, weekends are still incredibly popular, so I highly recommend booking well in advance!

And while it's fantastic for kids,
I honestly can't recommend it enough for adults!
