I recently headed back to Daehangno—Seoul’s famous off-Broadway theater district—to catch a play. I expected a typical, predictable rom-com, but I was pleasantly surprised by how refreshing and engaging it actually was! Let me introduce you to the hit play, "Male Friend, Female Friend."

What is "Male Friend, Female Friend" about?
Miri, a girl who has never managed to have a successful relationship, meets the seemingly perfect guy, Seongjin, thanks to a playful setup by her close guy friend, Minseok.
As Miri constantly leans on Minseok for relationship advice, she dreams of a picture-perfect romance. However, things take a turn when she discovers that the "perfect" Seongjin has a very close female friend of his own, Yunjin.
At first, Miri tells herself it’s fine since she has her own guy friend. But slowly, Yunjin's presence starts getting under her skin. As Miri falls deeper in love with Seongjin, accepting his female friend becomes an uphill battle. Misunderstandings and tension peak when all four of them—the couple and their respective best friends—embark on a trip together!
My Honest Review of "Male Friend, Female Friend"
While I’m not a theater critic, I’ve been watching a lot of Daehangno plays lately. One thing that stood out immediately at Saewoo Art Center was their reception desk.
This is where they check your reservation and hand over the physical tickets. I loved that they recommended the best available seats and actually checked if we were happy with the seating arrangement before finalizing it. It was such a thoughtful, welcoming touch!
The lobby waiting area was also incredibly clean, modern, and comfortable—definitely one of the nicest waiting spaces I've seen in the area.
If you've frequented indie theaters in Seoul, you know that basement venues can sometimes have less-than-ideal restrooms. Luckily, the facilities here were spotless and very well-maintained, which is a huge plus!
There's also a lucky draw event corner set up on one side, so make sure to drop your name in before the show starts!
Looking at the simple poster, I didn't expect much from the stage design. But once inside, I was seriously impressed by the vibrant, colorful lighting and the high production value of the set.
Best of all, the seats actually had proper backrests! I brought my mom along, and she was able to enjoy the entire show comfortably without any back strain.
Why You Should Catch This Show
If you love webtoons or romance novels, the premise probably sounds super familiar, right? We all love that classic, comforting "predictable" romance vibe... or do we?
That familiar trope is exactly why I chose this play for a theater date with my mom. But guess what? The ending was absolutely NOT what we expected!
My mom and I had guessed a certain ending, and when the play threw a curveball, it made the experience so much more thrilling and memorable.
I won't spoil the ending for you, but it’s definitely something you have to see for yourself! ❤️
Also, a quick tip for the extroverts (MBTI "E" types): arrive early and snag a seat in the front row! This is easily one of the most interactive, audience-participatory plays I've ever experienced. I found myself wishing I was up there joining in on the fun!
So, if you want to be part of the action, get there early and claim those front-row seats! ❤️

There were a few unexpected, unscripted moments on stage, but Ahn Seung-chan handled them with amazing wit and kept the show rolling seamlessly. Kim Min-su was fantastic, and he was so sweet and engaging with the crowd during the post-show photo session. Yoon Hyo-bin and Ha Jin delivered incredibly charming performances—they were absolutely adorable! ❤️
If you're looking for a lighthearted, funny, and interactive rom-com in Seoul, "Male Friend, Female Friend" is a must-see. Between the brilliant ad-libs, the audience engagement, and the surprising twist, it’s the perfect addition to your Daehangno itinerary!
