Hello everyone!
This is MinimaniMoo, bringing you restaurant stories hand-picked by Mini!
Do you often watch the YouTube channel of Davichi's Kang Min-kyung, who's well-known for her excellent taste in food?
Recently, in a video featuring Mamamoo's Hwasa, a makchang (grilled offal) restaurant was introduced as Hwasa's soul food and regular haunt!
And it turned out to be Dadong Hwangsomakchang, a truly authentic restaurant I've been visiting frequently with my colleagues since way back!

It's a bit of a shame that the romantic vibe of enjoying outdoor grilling in the middle of a lush park, like in the old days, is gone with the relocation, but...
I'll give you all the details on the much more spacious and pleasant Dadong Hwangsomakchang in Myeongdong, from weekday waiting info and reservation tips to honest menu recommendations – all based on my own experience!

Dadong Hwangsomakchang Waiting and Reservation Methods
Even before it became famous as a spot favored by Kang Min-kyung and Hwasa, it was already a hotspot for Euljiro office workers, so expect huge crowds during after-work hours.
You can remotely queue using the Tableing app here.
We had about 20 teams waiting when we arrived around 6 PM on a weekday.
Luckily, the turnover was faster than expected, and we were seated quickly after chatting a bit in the waiting area.

I highly recommend remotely queuing via the Tableing app before you even arrive at the location.

Group reservations are possible for 2 to 18 people.
The Naver reservation window opens at midnight one week before your desired visit date.
They only accept reservations for a maximum of 10 teams per day, but they also keep plenty of tables open for walk-ins (on-site waiting). So even if you can't get a reservation, try for an "open run" (arriving right at opening) or remote queuing!

Exterior / Interior
You'll find Dadong Hwangsomakchang down the alley across from Myeongdong Lotte Department Store.

Step inside, and you'll find round tables that evoke a pocha (Korean street food stall) vibe.
On one side, there are also neatly arranged long rectangular tables for group dinners and gatherings.

Back when it was located in Euljiro Park, it was inconvenient because you had to use the public park restrooms.
But at this new location, the separate men's and women's restrooms inside the restaurant are very clean and comfortable – a definite improvement!

Menu & Order Details
Dadong Hwangsomakchang's main signature dish is beef makchang (grilled beef intestines).
A beloved menu item that has been cherished by countless office workers since its days in the Euljiro Dadong alley!

You can conveniently place additional orders by scanning the QR code on your table with your smartphone.

My Review
Once you've placed your order, a refreshing bowl of soybean sprout soup
along with fresh cucumbers, chili peppers, ssamjang, and makjang sauce
are served as complimentary side dishes.

Next, the charcoal grill arrives,
and beautifully cleaned, pristine beef makchang (intestines)
are placed on it, along with potato slices.

Any makchang that doesn't fit on the grill is left on a plate,
and you can tell at a glance that it's been immaculately prepared, with no unpleasant smell.
It's incredibly reassuring to see.

Makchang can burn easily as the fat drips off,
so you need to flip it frequently with tongs to prevent it from scorching.
While there's a slight hassle of having to grill it yourself,
the moment it hits your mouth, all that effort melts away!

Once it's grilled to a golden brown on both sides,
dip it deep into the special makjang sauce with Cheongyang chili peppers and take a bite!
Seriously, this is the absolute best beef makchang I've ever tasted.
The texture isn't chewy at all; it's delightfully springy yet tender.

After filling up on the savory makchang,
we ordered jukkumi (webfoot octopus) to refresh our palates with something clean and spicy.
Jukkumi
It's plump and bouncy, coated in a vibrant red, rich sauce.

You grill it on the mesh over the charcoal, letting it soak up all that smoky aroma.
The moderately spicy sauce, infused with a subtle charcoal fragrance,
perfectly cuts through the richness of the makchang.

After enjoying some meat, finishing with carbs is the universal rule, right?
So we ordered both Janchi Guksu (banquet noodles) and the newly released Bibim Guksu (spicy mixed noodles).

I had high expectations for Dadong Hwangso Makchang's Janchi Guksu, remembering how delicious it was back in its old outdoor seating days.
However, on this day, it tasted strongly of fish sauce and was quite salty.

The new Bibim Guksu, with its spicy and sour kick,
perfectly balances the richness of the beef makchang.

For a final palate cleanser, we had the fluffy steamed egg casserole (Gyeran Jjim) that rose majestically from its dolsot pot!
Taking a spoonful of the steaming hot gyeran jjim,
it soothed our spicy palates, making for a perfect end to the meal.

My Overall Impression
While I do miss the unique old-school charm of enjoying outdoor seating in a city park,
the newly renovated restaurant is much more comfortable, and even has spotless indoor restrooms,
making it even better for gatherings.
The incredible quality of the beef makchang, offering savory goodness without any hint of an off-putting smell,
along with the friendly staff, made the experience top-notch.
✔️ Just a 5-6 minute walk from Euljiro 1(il)-ga Station and Myeongdong Station
✔️ Highly recommend the chewy yet tender makchang with the spicy and sour Bibim Guksu
✔️ Comfortable indoor interior, with separate men's and women's restrooms
This weekend, or for an evening after work,
how about enjoying a glass of soju with friends or colleagues at Dadong Hwangso Makchang, a famous spot adored by Kang Min-kyung and Hwasa?
