Seoul, a city constantly buzzing with energy, also holds serene pockets where you can unwind and reconnect. One such enchanting discovery I made this past May while strolling through the heart of the city was the 'Book-Reading Clear Stream' along Cheonggyecheon.

Initially, I thought, “Is this just a place to sit and read?” But as I walked further, seeing the illuminated chairs and books lining the Cheonggyecheon stream, I couldn't help but stop and explore.

It turned out to be the ‘Book-Reading Clear Stream,’ a captivating branch of the Seoul Outdoor Library initiative.

Imagine reading a book with the gentle sounds of a stream in the background, right in the middle of Seoul! I ended up walking all the way from here to Euljiro that evening, and the experience was surprisingly delightful.

The autumn season for this unique outdoor library has just begun, offering a perfect escape. 📚

The Book-Reading Clear Stream is a special section of the Seoul Outdoor Library, set up along the Cheonggyecheon stream, stretching from Cheonggye Plaza towards Mugyo-dong Intersection.

For fall 2026, the library operates every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from September 5th to November 2nd, and it's completely free to enjoy.

Daytime hours are from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. During peak summer, they even have evening hours (4:00 PM to 10:00 PM), but for autumn, it's primarily daytime.

Please note that pets are not allowed, and on-site food and drinks are restricted.

I visited in the spring during the evening hours, and personally, the nighttime ambiance here was absolutely magical. 🌙

They set up chairs with backrests right by the Cheonggyecheon stream, with small tables and soft lighting interspersed between them.

Even across the water, people were lined up, engrossed in their books. The way the lights reflected on the Cheonggyecheon water made me momentarily forget I was in the bustling heart of Seoul.

Of course, I spent a bit more time observing my surroundings than reading, haha!

But even just sitting there with a book open, listening to the water, it made me feel like a true bibliophile, even if at home I'd usually reach for my phone after ten pages, haha!

After enjoying the Book-Reading Clear Stream, I didn't just turn back; I continued my stroll along Cheonggyecheon.

When I visited in May, fascinating video projections were displayed on the surface of the stream under the bridges.

Flowers and lights moved across the water, blending with the real ripples to create a truly mesmerizing scene.

It was even more beautiful captured on video than in photos!

However, please note that such media art installations can vary depending on the season and specific events, so the exact scene I witnessed might not always be present.

Nonetheless, the neon signs, small lights, and the general nightscape of Cheonggyecheon alone make it a wonderfully attractive evening walk. ✨

Watching people read under the lights, admiring the reflections on the water, I walked on and found myself in Euljiro.

If you prefer a date that involves a bit of reading and a leisurely walk over a more structured activity, I highly recommend this course.

It's also a great idea to have dinner in Gwanghwamun or near Cheonggyecheon, then visit the Book-Reading Clear Stream, and finally take a slow walk towards Euljiro. 🚶

As the evening air begins to cool, like it does now, sitting by the Cheonggyecheon stream with a book sounds absolutely perfect.
