A single lap around Carrefour is the ultimate answer.

featuring souvenirs I actually bought with my own money,
plus a must-know discount tip for buying Kavalan Whisky!
Carrefour is a massive hypermarket chain with locations all over Taiwan.
Think of it as the Walmart or Target of Taiwan, where you can buy local specialties, snacks, and alcohol
even cheaper than at duty-free shops.
It is an absolute must-visit shopping destination.

Let's dive in! 💚
1. Carrefour Taiwan Basic Info: Location & Hours

As mentioned, Carrefour is a major local supermarket chain
found throughout the country.
Since I was based in Taipei,
I visited the Guilin Store,
which is the closest branch to Ximending Station.
Carrefour Guilin Store Location: 11-minute walk (~0.5 miles) from Ximending Station
Open 24 Hours
📍 Carrefour Guilin Store
No. 1, Guilin Rd, Rende Village, Wanhua District, Taipei City, Taiwan 108
It's open 24/7, so you can pop in whenever it fits your schedule!
2. Top Carrefour Shopping List Recommendations
1. Darlie Toothpaste - Star Edition
~$3

This is a special Darlie toothpaste that actually dispenses little star shapes.
The Colgate heart-shaped toothpaste is super popular in places like Vietnam,
and it looks like Darlie released a similar, fun version.

It's not the cheapest toothpaste on the shelf, but it's so cute
that I highly recommend it as a quirky souvenir.
Plus, it leaves your mouth feeling incredibly fresh and minty!
2. Edible Bubble Tea Postcard
~$3

Yes, you read that right. It's a postcard, but you can drink it.
It actually contains real tapioca boba pearls inside, making it a fantastic and unique gift.

You just boil them in water and add them to your tea or desserts. As expected from the birthplace of bubble tea,
there are so many creative boba-themed souvenirs here.
3. Xiaolongbao Cushion
~$15

If I had extra room in my suitcase, I would have absolutely bought this Xiaolongbao (soup dumpling) cushion.
It is incredibly soft and squishy to the touch.
It's also surprisingly large,
making it the perfect cozy companion to hug while sleeping or lounging on the couch.
4. Lay's Potato Fries
~$2

Sure, you can find Lay's anywhere in the world,
but there are specific flavors you'll only find in Taiwan and Greater China.
Particularly the Cilantro and Tomato Ketchup flavors.
These are shaped like french fries, making them extra crunchy,
and they pair perfectly with an ice-cold beer.

The cilantro flavor has a subtle, pleasant herbal kick,
while the ketchup flavor tastes exactly like eating fries dipped in ketchup!
I made sure to grab one of each.
5. I-Mei Choco Puff Balls
~$3

These chocolate puff balls are arguably one of the most frequently bought items by tourists visiting Carrefour.
They are similar to classic chocolate cream puffs,
but the texture is a bit different, making them worth a try.
Honestly, they won't blow your mind,
but they are a solid, highly snackable treat.
They taste exactly how you'd imagine! Haha.
I loved eating mine with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
6. Beef Noodle Soup (Cup Ramen)
~$2

Want to bring the taste of Taiwan home in a cup?
Then you need to grab this instant beef noodle soup.
It's not overly spicy, but it boasts a rich, savory broth that appeals to almost everyone.

They offer it in both cup and packet forms,
so just pick whichever is easier to pack in your luggage.
7. Dr. Q Konjac Jelly
~$3

If you've ever been to Japan, you know the konjac jelly hype.
Well, Taiwan has its own incredibly popular version!
They come in convenient little squeeze pouches
and are available in a variety of fruit flavors.

The lychee flavor is usually the best-seller,
but I bought a mixed bag of grape and lychee.
Verdict: The grape flavor is definitely superior! :)
8. Lay's Potato Chips (Unique Flavors)
~$1

As I mentioned earlier, visiting Asia means
unlocking a whole new world of Lay's chip flavors.

You'll find wild options like cucumber, cilantro, lime, and more.
If you are an adventurous eater, you have to try the Durian flavored Lay's.
They also make for a hilarious novelty gift for friends back home.
9. Taiwanese Shrimp Crackers
~$4

This is the Taiwanese take on classic Asian shrimp crackers.
I only snapped a photo of it at the time,
but after reading tons of rave reviews online, I realized I missed out.
If you enjoy savory seafood snacks, definitely toss a bag of these into your cart.
10. Taiwan Beer
~$1

Taiwan Beer comes in an amazing array of flavors.
They offer unique fruit blends like grape, apple mango, and pineapple that you won't easily find in Western supermarkets, making them a great souvenir.

Highly recommended if you enjoy sweeter, easy-drinking alcoholic beverages!
11. Whisky
Significantly cheaper than back home

You simply cannot visit Taiwan without checking out the whisky aisle.
You will find premium whiskies here for at least ~$15-20 cheaper
than what you'd pay in the US or Europe.
Brands like Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, and Balvenie are all heavily discounted.
(Macallan, however, is priced similarly to back home).

For instance, Ballantine's 17 Year Old
usually goes for around ~$85 back home, even at discount stores...
But in Taiwan, it's around ~$54!
Glenlivet is available for around ~$38.

You can grab a 15-year-old Glenfiddich for just ~$46.

Balvenie is also a steal at ~$54.
A quick glance proves it's much cheaper than back home,
so if you appreciate good spirits, definitely pick up a bottle.
I ended up buying the Ballantine's 17 Year Old.
Without discounts, that bottle usually costs me ~$108!
( Literally half price )

Note: They do sell Kavalan whisky here as well,
but I highly recommend buying it from a specialty liquor shop for better discounts.
I will explain exactly how to do this below!
12. Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor
~$15

If you enjoy strong spirits, Kinmen Kaoliang is a must-buy.
It is readily available at Carrefour.
Clocking in at 58% ABV (116 proof), it packs a serious punch,
but since it's an iconic liquor originating from Taiwan's Kinmen Island,
it's a very popular souvenir.
( For limited editions, you'll need to visit a specialty liquor store )
13. Fridge Magnets

Because this store sees so many tourists,
they have a dedicated section for classic souvenirs
like fridge magnets and keychains.

14. Fresh Fruits (A Warning)

They also sell a wide variety of fresh fruits.
I didn't include this as a 'must-buy',
but rather as a warning of what NOT to buy here.

You'd think tropical Taiwan equals cheap fruit, right?
Wrong! It's actually quite expensive here!
Do not expect the rock-bottom fruit prices you'd find in Southeast Asia.
The fruit at this specific Carrefour Guilin branch is especially pricey.

If you are craving fresh fruit,
I recommend ordering it via a local delivery app or just enjoying it at your hotel's breakfast buffet.
Taiwanese fruit... isn't as budget-friendly as you might think 😱
3. The Ultimate Taiwan Souvenir - Kavalan Whisky Discount Tips

You can't talk about Taiwan souvenirs without mentioning
Kavalan Whisky!
The price fluctuates significantly depending on where you buy it.
Generally, your options are Local Supermarkets / Duty-Free / Liquor Shops.
Technically, if you apply all promotional discounts,
buying from online duty-free before your flight
is usually the absolute cheapest route.
( Excluding the Classic series )
However, shopping in Taiwan allows you to find unique editions
and guarantees better stock availability.
For that, I highly recommend local liquor shops.

Specifically, I purchased mine at the
Daldalhae Liquor Shop in Ximending.
( This is NOT a sponsored post!!! )

The biggest perk of this shop is that if you are having trouble deciding,
they will happily offer you free tastings.
There is zero pressure, and the staff is incredibly friendly!
I had never seen so many varieties of Kavalan in one place,
so I was having a really hard time choosing.
Thanks to the owner guiding me through a tasting session,
I was able to find the exact flavor profile I loved.

Communication was a breeze, and they also carry
a wide range of miniature Kavalan bottles,
which make for phenomenal gifts.
While prices fluctuate slightly depending on the season,
they gave me a discount off the sticker prices shown in the photo above
for both the miniature and standard bottles :)
One thing is for sure: even before the discount, it was cheaper than Carrefour!

They also stock a ton of limited-edition Kinmen Kaoliang bottles,
so I ended up buying some of those here as well!

I ultimately walked away with a great haul of miniatures.
But wait, here is a hidden trick.
If you subscribe to the YouTube channel "Freehan Insu"
and mention "I came from Freehan Insu" when you visit,
you will get a special discount!
This is an exclusive perk negotiated directly with the owner,
so you won't find this info anywhere else 😊
>> Subscribe to Freehan Insu on YouTube
Oh, and if you have no idea what Kavalan is
but just want to buy a good bottle:
Go for the Classic (best value for money)
or the Solist (perfect for premium gifting).
4. Carrefour Taiwan Shopping Tips

✅ Claim Your Tax Refund - Some branches allow you to process tax-free refunds right on the spot.
The Guilin store offers this service, so keep it in mind if you plan on spending over ~$62 (2,000 NTD)!
( Don't forget to bring your passport! )
5. Final Thoughts

The key to successful souvenir shopping in Taiwan
is knowing exactly what you want before you go.
Keep in mind that shopping at Carrefour is tax-free eligible,
so consolidate your purchases to hit the minimum spend!
For Kavalan, head over to the Daldalhae Liquor Shop in Ximending,
ask the owner for recommendations, and enjoy a tasting. Just remember, these are expensive whiskies, so don't treat the tasting like a free open bar!!
Don't forget to use the YouTube trick
to score that Kavalan Whisky discount :)
Happy travels! - 🫶🏻
