Hey there, fellow travelers!
Eden here, ready to dive into the most crucial item for your Taipei adventure:
the Taiwan EasyCard! In this post, I'll cover everything you need to know about purchasing, topping up, and even refunding your EasyCard, along with its cost and where to use it.

01. How to Buy a Taiwan EasyCard
You essentially have two main ways to purchase an EasyCard:
1️⃣
The first method is to pre-book your card online from your home country and then
collect it at Taoyuan Airport upon arrival.
2️⃣
The second option is to purchase it directly at a
convenience store in downtown Taipei!
If you buy it locally, you can easily find them at MRT stations or convenience stores. The card itself costs 100 TWD.

However, my top recommendation is to pre-book your EasyCard through a travel platform like Klook or MyRealTrip and pick it up directly at the airport.
Pre-booking and collecting at the airport often costs the same, or even less if you can apply a coupon code.

What I particularly loved was the option for a pre-loaded card. This meant I could pick up my EasyCard at Taoyuan Airport and start using it immediately, which was incredibly convenient!

02. Picking Up Your EasyCard at Taoyuan Airport

On my recent trip to Taipei, Taiwan, I arrived at Taoyuan International Airport!
After collecting your luggage, simply follow the airport signs for 'Transportation Cards,' and you'll easily find the collection counter.
Just show the staff your QR code or voucher from your booking, and you'll receive your EasyCard instantly!

03. How to Top Up Your EasyCard

If your EasyCard balance runs low, you can easily top it up at convenience stores or at the self-service machines located within MRT stations!
Simply place your card on the designated spot on the charging machine in an MRT station, and the top-up screen will automatically appear. Most machines also support English, so even first-time users will find it straightforward!
One helpful tip to remember is that these machines often don't give change, so instead of inserting a large sum initially, I recommend topping up smaller amounts as needed, aligning with your travel itinerary!
04. How to Get a Taiwan EasyCard Refund

If you have a remaining balance on your EasyCard at the end of your trip, you can get a refund!
Refunds can be processed directly at the customer service centers within Taiwan's MRT (subway) stations. Just ask the staff for an EasyCard refund, and they'll handle it for you right away!
However, please note that a 20 TWD service fee will be deducted from your remaining balance, and you'll receive the rest of your funds back.
I personally plan to travel to Taiwan again, so I didn't bother with a refund and brought my card back home with me.
05. Where You Can Use Your EasyCard

The EasyCard was incredibly convenient during my Taipei trip, and it's not just for transportation! It's a versatile card that can be used in many different places:
MRT (Subway) & Buses
In cities like Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Taoyuan, you can use your EasyCard as a transportation card. Simply tap it once when you enter the MRT or bus and again when you exit.
Taxis
Some taxis support EasyCard payments! However, it's not universally accepted across all vehicles! I highly recommend confirming with your driver before getting in if they accept card payments.
Convenience Stores & Supermarkets
You can use your EasyCard for payments at convenience stores like 7-Eleven and FamilyMart, and even at larger supermarkets like Carrefour.
On my last day, I used my remaining balance to buy snacks and drinks at a convenience store. It was great to use up the exact amount without worrying about small change!

Taiwan YouBike Guide: Rental, Returns, Deposit & Refunds in Taipei & Kaohsiung
You can easily purchase an EasyCard at MRT stations or convenience stores in Taiwan. The card itself costs 100 TWD.
You can visit the customer service center at any MRT station in Taiwan and ask the staff for a refund. A fee of 20 TWD will be deducted, and you will receive the remaining balance.
Most automated top-up machines inside subway stations do not give change. Therefore, it is recommended to top up in small amounts according to your travel itinerary rather than inserting a large amount of money at once.
