This was actually my second trip to Kaohsiung, and I was looking for something new to do. With a gloomy, rainy forecast for one of the days, I decided to find an awesome indoor spot.
That's how I stumbled upon the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.

The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts is most conveniently accessed via the Light Rail Fine Arts of Museum Station.
While I personally navigated with Google Maps and took a taxi (similar to ride-sharing apps in the US), using an EasyCard makes public transport in Taiwan, whether it's the Light Rail or a taxi, much smoother!

The museum is surrounded by a vast park, so even after getting off the Light Rail, it's a bit of a walk along the main road to reach the entrance. Since rain was in the forecast, the sky was overcast and drizzling throughout the day.
While I've often visited art museums in Europe and the US, this was actually my first time exploring a museum in Asia. It was a refreshing change of pace!

Upon entering, you'll find the ticket counter immediately to the left of the lobby. The main museum entrance is in the center, and to the right, there's a gift shop.
General admission is 90 NT. Concession tickets, priced at 45 NT, are available for university students, seniors aged 65 and over (on weekends/holidays), and groups of 20 or more.

I didn't qualify for any discounts, so I simply paid the 90 NT for my ticket. You can also purchase tickets in advance through platforms like Klook or KKday. Depending on the exchange rate, this might sometimes be a bit cheaper, so it’s worth checking the link below:

The lobby area is a single story, but once you pass through the central entrance, you step into a spacious building that spans four impressive floors.
From what I observed, the museum seems to focus more on special exhibitions rather than extensive permanent collections. So, it's a good idea to check the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts website for current exhibitions before your visit.
Since these were special exhibitions, each entrance featured informative posters and descriptions.
These two pieces, located on the first floor, were among the first I saw when my concentration was still at its peak!
This piece cleverly illustrates the idea that as people become increasingly glued to their smartphones, humanity might evolve to resemble the figure on the far right!
This was an incredibly massive artwork. The artist created it by continuously drawing with a pencil on a canvas against a wall, reportedly walking several miles in the process. Next to the piece, they displayed several worn-out shoes and countless used pencils, showcasing the immense effort involved.
Some of the artworks didn't have English explanations, but don't worry – you've always got Google Translate (or a similar app) in your pocket!
The sheer scale of this piece was truly impressive, making it the most memorable artwork for me. It's designed to be modular, so its size can adapt to different venues, but here at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, it commanded the space, stretching across two full stories.
After a lot of standing and admiring, I took a break in a comfortable lounge area. It was still pouring outside, which made me feel even better about choosing the museum for the day!
Honestly, when I visited, many of the exhibitions were focused on contemporary art, which can sometimes be a bit challenging (haha!). But this particular section, with its landscape-like paintings, was much easier to appreciate.
This piece looked like a global network, intricately woven with strings.
There was also an interactive exhibition related to food, where visitors could draw or write about food-related topics in a guestbook format. I didn't write this one myself, but I was delighted to see a message left by another Korean visitor! It's always fun to find little connections abroad.
Since I wasn't familiar with many of the artists, the merchandise in the gift shop didn't particularly grab my attention, though I did eye a stylish bag!
Unless you're a dedicated art lover, you might not feel the need to make a special trip to the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. However, if you find yourself in Kaohsiung on a dreary day and are looking for great indoor activities, it's definitely worth considering. It wasn't crowded, offering a wonderfully peaceful and serene atmosphere!

The general admission fee for the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts is NT$90. University students can purchase tickets at a discounted rate of NT$45 upon presenting their student ID.
Getting off at the Light Rail Museum of Fine Arts station is the closest. It is recommended to prepare an EasyCard in advance when using public transportation in Taiwan, such as the light rail.
The proportion of permanent exhibitions is small, and the museum mainly focuses on special exhibitions. Therefore, it is recommended to check the current special exhibitions on the museum's website before visiting.
There is a Taiwan bus tour that visits Tianliao Moon World and Fo Guang Shan along with the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. This tour is accompanied by a Korean-speaking guide, and departure is confirmed when two or more people book.
