Tentenshacha Hotpot Kaohsiung: A True Local Gem
Craving authentic Kaohsiung hotpot? Tentenshacha offers a delightful, mild shabu-shabu experience with unique ingredients like shrimp paste and egg dumplings. A local favorite!

If you're exploring Kaohsiung and looking to escape the usual tourist hotspots for something genuinely local, Tentenshacha Hotpot is a must-try. This hidden culinary gem offers an authentic Taiwanese hotpot experience that truly stands out.
This Kaohsiung hotpot restaurant was even featured on "Dokbak Tour," a popular Korean travel show, yet surprisingly, we were the only international visitors during our visit. Unlike the fiery, numbing mala hotpot many might expect, Tentenshacha serves a wonderfully clean and savory shabu-shabu style hotpot.
While its location isn't the most central, requiring a dedicated trip, the memorable dishes like the fresh shrimp paste and delicate egg dumplings, coupled with incredibly spacious tables, make it well worth the effort. We've compiled all the essential details for Tentenshacha Hotpot in Kaohsiung, including its location, operating hours, menu highlights, and our personal dining review.

1. Location & Hours

Tentenshacha Hotpot isn't surrounded by major tourist attractions, so you'll definitely need to set aside specific time to visit. However, if you're planning a trip to Shoushan Zoo, it makes for a perfect dining option to combine with your itinerary.
📍 Tentenshacha Hotpot
No. 240號, Qixian 3rd Rd, Fubei Village, Yancheng District, Kaohsiung City, 803 Taiwan

The restaurant operates with split lunch and dinner hours:
✔️Friday - Tuesday
11:30 AM - 1:30 PM
5:00 PM - 10:00 PM
✔️Wednesday & Thursday: Closed
The lunch service is quite short, only two hours, so make sure to time your visit carefully. Reservations are highly recommended, especially for weekend or evening dining, and can be made via the official website linked on Google Maps.

Inside, each circular table features a built-in burner, and we were pleasantly surprised by how spacious the tables were. For a hotpot meal where plates and ingredients tend to accumulate, ample table space is a huge plus. We found it incredibly comfortable to dine with plenty of room for all our selections.
2. Menu

Thanks to its feature on "Dokbak Tour," Tentenshacha Hotpot sees many international visitors, so the menu conveniently includes English descriptions. While the translations weren't always perfect, it made choosing our dishes far easier than deciphering traditional Chinese characters alone.

To order, you first select your main protein, typically beef or pork for shabu-shabu. Then, you choose from a wide array of additional ingredients to cook in your hotpot, such as fresh vegetables, fish balls, various dumplings, and tofu skin. We highly recommend trying some of their unique offerings, like the scallop paste, shrimp paste, or the delicate egg dumplings, which aren't commonly found elsewhere.
3. Our Dining Experience

Here's what we ordered:
✔️Shabu-shabu beef/pork
✔️Shrimp paste
✔️Swallow dumplings, egg dumplings, fish balls
✔️Tofu skin, cabbage, baby corn, enoki mushrooms
✔️Udon noodles
Initially, I expected a strong, numbing mala broth, typical of many hotpot places. However, the broth at Tentenshacha was incredibly light and savory, much closer to a traditional Korean shabu-shabu where the natural flavors of the ingredients truly shine.

The broth itself was seasoned perfectly and delicious on its own, but pairing it with the shacha sauce (a savory, peanut-based condiment) along with minced garlic and fresh chili added another layer of incredible flavor. It kept every bite exciting and prevented any palate fatigue.

One interesting touch was the fresh lettuce served alongside the hotpot. Our server showed us how to wrap the cooked meat in lettuce, a delightful and refreshing way to enjoy the flavors. We added the rest of our chosen vegetables to the broth as we pleased!

The most memorable item for me was the shrimp paste. When I first heard "shrimp paste," I imagined something like a marinated shrimp dish, but it was actually a fresh shrimp paste that you roll into balls and cook directly in the hotpot. As a big fan of seafood, I absolutely loved these bouncy, flavorful shrimp balls. The distinct aroma and succulent texture of the shrimp were incredibly satisfying.

We also ordered the fried tofu skin, which arrived in a surprisingly large sheet – almost the size of a face! It was quite amusing. Once simmered in the broth, it quickly softened and absorbed all the rich flavors, making it a unique and delicious topping that's hard to find in other hotpot spots.

The various dumplings and fish balls were also incredibly fresh and flavorful. The delicate egg dumplings, with their soft exterior and savory filling, paired perfectly with the broth, making it hard to stop at just one.

What really surprised us was the meat. Instead of the super thin, rolled slices typically found in hotpot, the cuts here were noticeably thicker, almost like grilling steak. While it didn't take long to cook, this thicker cut offered a much more satisfying and substantial texture than conventional shabu-shabu meat, which we really appreciated.
Despite its slightly out-of-the-way location, which might seem inconvenient for a packed sightseeing schedule, Tentenshacha Hotpot is absolutely worth seeking out if you're keen to try a local favorite featured on a popular TV show, or if you simply prefer a clean, non-spicy hotpot experience with unique ingredients.
