Taiwan Kaohsiung-Kenting Travel
Kenting Car Rental Trip

Hey there, Global Explorers! 😊
I recently shared some insights on booking flights to Okinawa, and another destination that was high on my travel radar was Kenting, Taiwan's southernmost resort paradise.

Kenting doesn't have direct flights from many countries, but it's an easy drive of about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Kaohsiung International Airport.
With its emerald waters, scenic coastal roads, dramatic limestone cliffs, and vast grasslands, it's no wonder Kenting is often dubbed 'Taiwan's Hawaii'. It's a hugely popular summer getaway for both locals and international travelers.

When I started planning my Kenting adventure, the first thing I puzzled over was transportation. I initially thought all the attractions were clustered together, but it turns out they're spread out across the eastern and western coasts. Relying solely on buses or taxis seemed a bit inconvenient, so naturally, I started looking into car rentals.
In this post, I'll share everything I learned while researching my trip: transportation options, car rental price comparisons, and must-see attractions. I've even got a 10% discount coupon tip, so if you're planning to rent a car, make sure to read all the way to the end! 😊
📍 Kaohsiung International Airport
No. 2號, Jhongshan 4th Rd, Zhongcuo Village, Siaogang District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan 812
📍 Kenting National Park
Pingtung, Taiwan
📍 Location: Hengchun Peninsula, Pingtung County, Taiwan (similar latitude to Hawaii)
🕒 Travel Time: Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes drive from Kaohsiung
✅ Climate: Mild year-round, April through October is the recommended travel period

✅ Recommended Itinerary: 2 nights/3 days to 3 nights/4 days
✅ Recommended Travel Type: Couples, Families, Independent Travelers
Transportation Options Compared |
There are three main ways to get from Kaohsiung to Kenting: the local bus (Kenting Express), a full-day tour, or a rental car.
Method of Travel | Estimated Cost | Recommended For |
Kenting Express (Independent Travel) | Approx. ~$6 one-way with EasyCard | Those who find day tours too short and prefer not to drive |
Full-Day Bus Tour (Join-in Tour) | Approx. ~$28 per person and up | Those who want to comfortably explore major attractions without driving |
Rental Car (Independent Travel) | Varies by vehicle (Detailed comparison below) | Those who want to travel freely without schedule constraints |
If you opt for the Kenting Express, you'll likely need to rent a scooter or use taxis once you arrive in Kenting, which might limit your ability to explore widely.
A full-day tour can be a great option for families traveling with parents or children, as it conveniently covers the main sights.
Rental Car Price Comparison |
If you have the time, a rental car seemed like the most suitable option for a Kenting trip. When renting a car abroad, it's crucial to check not just the vehicle price, but also insurance, customer support, and cancellation policies. After looking at reviews from travelers who rented cars in Taiwan, Trip.com and Klook consistently came up with high satisfaction scores.
I compared prices directly, using the criteria of pickup and return at Kaohsiung International Airport and the same car class (Toyota Corolla Cross or similar).
My usual go-to, MyRealTrip, was around ~$221, which was significantly more expensive than Klook and Trip.com, so I excluded it from this comparison.

For a 3-day rental of the vehicle shown above, both sites had similar base prices, starting around ~$138.
Booking Platform | Price | Booking Link |
Klook | ~$152 | |
Trip.com | ~$142 |
While the prices between these two sites aren't drastically different, consider applying any special offers or first-time booking discounts they might have to get the best deal!
Keep in mind that prices for the same vehicle can fluctuate based on dates and availability, so it's a good idea to check current rates as soon as your travel dates are firm.
