1. Visiting Camellia Hill, Jeju

Even though the summer heat still lingers during the day,
these days, a pleasant autumn breeze has started to
gently blow in the mornings and evenings.
My husband and I, both Jeju locals, took my mother-in-law, who was visiting us,
to Camellia Hill on Jeju Island,
one of the most representative must-visit attractions in western Jeju.

This is a western Jeju attraction we make sure to visit every year around this time.
Sprawling over approximately 60,000 pyeong (about 49 acres), this expansive
travel destination was cultivated with decades of dedication by its founder.
It's Asia's largest camellia arboretum, and even outside of deep winter,
you can find a variety of beautiful flowers like Jeju's pink muhly and hydrangeas,
making it a beloved spot year-round.

Enjoy a healing stroll among thousands of camellia trees from 80 different countries.
Even in early autumn, Camellia Hill, a truly must-visit spot in western Jeju,
offers a wide array of sights in its greenhouses and outdoor gardens.
I'll share all the details on its location, attractions, and even the cafe menu,
along with vivid, real-time autumn scenery.

As it's a popular tourist spot, the parking lot is spacious, so we could park comfortably.

After passing the ticket booth at the entrance of Jeju Camellia Hill and following the observation path,
a lush camellia forest path greets you first. Although it's not yet camellia season,
the ground is flat and there are palm mats laid out, making it easy to walk with my mother-in-law without any strain.

In the verdant camellia forest,
at Camellia Hill House on Jeju Island, an exhibition was being held to celebrate the publication of the
'Camellia Flower Encyclopedia,' featuring 249 representative species out of the 500+ camellia varieties from 80 countries found at Camellia Hill.
We had a wonderfully healing time admiring the beautiful photographic artworks.

As expected from a must-visit spot in western Jeju,
beautiful plants and vibrant flowers are displayed throughout the four seasons.
We were able to capture plenty of photos of my mother-in-law, who simply adores flowers,
at the many photo zones set up around the garden.

One spot that particularly impressed my mother
was the vantage point where you can relax at Soryujeong Pavilion
and truly soak in the scenery of 'Bosun Pond'.
This pond is meaningfully named after the last characters of the names of its founder, Yang Eon-bo, and his wife, Park Bosun.
It beautifully commemorates the love and dedication with which this couple toiled for many years to cultivate the arboretum.
Two oval ponds are said to represent them, and on one side,
a stone statue of the wife gazing at the beautiful pond felt truly mystical.

In spring, a vibrant hydrangea path unfolds, but even in this season without hydrangeas,
the lush green path was beautiful enough to captivate us.

Next to the second glass greenhouse,
there's an observatory offering a breathtaking view of the expansive Secret Garden and Waryungyeonji Pond below.

In the distance, Gunsan, Marado, Gapado,
Songaksan, Sanbangsan, Dansan, and Moseulbong Peaks all came into view at a glance.
On one side, Hallasan Mountain was also visible, creating such a wide-open vista that it felt incredibly refreshing.

Finally, we headed to the Autumn Garden.
While it's famous for its winter camellias and summer hydrangeas,
the 'Autumn Garden' truly shines as a four-season arboretum.
It fills any seasonal gaps with its romantic autumn ambiance, allowing you to fully experience it, making it a truly beautiful Western Jeju attraction.

Located in the latter part of the walking trail, on an expansive open field,
it was a truly must-visit spot in Western Jeju where you could immerse yourself in tall pampas grass, shimmering silver eulalia,
silver sedge, cosmos, and a vibrant array of other autumn flowers.

As of September 9th, the pink muhly grass was just beginning to turn pink.
Instead of a dense pink hue, it was a soft blend of pastel pinks,
offering a fresher, more pristine early autumn scenery of Jeju Island's pink muhly,
a delightful contrast to the deeper, richer tones of late autumn.
As befits a famous pink muhly spot in Jeju, from late September
through mid to late October is the peak season.
During this time, you can revel in the spectacular Autumn Garden, filled with flamboyant waves of pink
that resemble abundant cotton candy.
3. On-site Cafes

As expected of a large Western Jeju attraction,
convenience facilities like souvenir shops, cafes, and restaurants are thoughtfully arranged throughout.
This allowed my mother-in-law and I to fully enjoy our trip,
taking delightful breaks at various uniquely themed cafes along the way.
Cafe Camellia, conveniently located next to the ticket office at both the entrance and exit,
is an indoor cafe with a cozy atmosphere, perfect for a comfortable break.

The interior of the second glass greenhouse is transformed into a grand flower cafe,
creating a wonderful space where you can comfortably enjoy drinks indoors
while admiring the blooming flowers and lush green plants that fill the greenhouse year-round.
Menu Ordered
Camellia & Gyul-rae Tea: ~$5
Udo Peanut Milk Tea: ~$5
Iced Americano: ~$3

The Houbaknamu Cafe, nestled beside the Secret Garden, Houbaknamu Forest Path, and Light Bulb Path,
serves as an outdoor forest resting area. We enjoyed relaxing in the outdoor seating, soaking in the autumn breeze
and savoring heart churros (each ~$1) while gazing at the beautiful garden.

Even on the way out, there are cafes and art shops, allowing you to browse lovely souvenirs as you finish your visit to Camellia Hill in Jeju. There were so many camellia-themed items, which made them feel extra special and meaningful.
At Dongbaek Kitchen restaurant near the entrance, you can enjoy local Korean dishes like hairtail fish, mackerel, red tilefish, sea urchin seaweed soup, and gogi guksu (meat noodles), all at reasonable prices. It's a great spot to enjoy a satisfying meal too, making it a must-visit place on the west side of Jeju Island.
4. Wrapping Up Our Visit to Jeju's Pink Muhly Spot

Exploring the lush green forest paths, warm greenhouses, and the autumn garden where Jeju's pink muhly waves were just starting to bloom with vibrant pink hues, my mother-in-law and I made unforgettable early autumn memories at Camellia Hill, a truly wonderful spot on Jeju's west side.

Even though it's a vast botanical garden, the walking paths are well-maintained and comfortable to stroll along. With benches perfectly placed for rest stops and cafes available along the way, it was a fantastic course to leisurely walk and relax.

It's also great for visiting with children in strollers, and small dogs under 8kg are welcome to enter with you. So, Camellia Hill in Jeju is a wonderful place for everyone to visit, from young to old, and even your furry friends!
I hope your whole family gets to enjoy some healing time amidst this beautifully maintained natural paradise.
