My unforgettable 3-Night, 4-Day October trip to Xi'an with Mom (no squabbles!)
Complete Guide: Itinerary, Accommodation, and Costs
(a.k.a. A trip to spoil Mom…? Zhangjiajie No.. Terracotta Army Yes..)

Welcoming the best travel months: September, October, and November,
I went on a trip to Xi'an, China with my mom (it was her first time!).
I'll cover our 3-night, 4-day itinerary, hotel and accommodation recommendations, things to do, costs, and transportation.
Everything you need to know about getting around.
- Intro.
For my mom's first trip to China, I wanted to treat her to something special (a 'filial piety trip,' if you will!).
So, instead of Zhangjiajie, we went to Xi'an.
My mom can be a bit particular, and our personalities are quite opposite,
so I was honestly a little worried.
But we managed to put together a 3-night, 4-day itinerary that was just perfect – no arguments, just pure joy!
We pulled it off beautifully!

Egypt felt a bit too far, so we opted for something closer instead:
An Eastern marvel just a 3-hour flight away!
We headed to Xi'an, home of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Terracotta Army,
and let me tell you, the Terracotta Army was absolutely astonishing and magnificent!

During our 3 nights in Xi'an, we stayed in a different hotel each night,
and my mom raved about how unique and wonderful each one was!
As a hotel lover myself, I was incredibly proud to receive such high praise from her.…
(Xi'an doesn't have as many ultra-luxurious and expensive hotels as Shanghai, so
this was both a blessing – allowing us to spoil her with great value – and a slight concern, as there weren't as many high-end options.)
Even though I'm usually a spontaneous 'P' traveler, I meticulously planned our 3-night, 4-day Xi'an itinerary for my mom, who tends to be a 'J' and gets anxious without a plan!
So, I'm excited to share our carefully crafted Xi'an itinerary with you all!!!!
On the flight, there were many travelers in their 50s and 60s joining group tours,
but my mom seemed extra happy to be traveling just with me, her daughter...? Mission accomplished, filial daughter!

Our 3-Night, 4-Day Xi'an Itinerary & Things to Do

First and foremost, the absolute must-see in Xi'an is Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Terracotta Army, one of the world's greatest mysteries!
And Xi'an also boasts some truly spectacular performances related to its history.
(They are so grand!) Everyone highly recommended them, and having experienced them myself,
I can wholeheartedly recommend them too!
Xi'an is also historically known as Chang'an – the origin of the phrase 'Chang'an's sensation' (meaning 'talk of the town').
Our itinerary included visiting the Grand Tang Everbright City and the Bell Tower, both popular attractions for tourists.
While many group tourists seemed to visit Mount Huashan, located near Xi'an,
my mom's stamina is, well, limited… so we skipped it.
Instead, to soothe our tired bodies after exploring the Terracotta Army,
we included a cozy dip in a nearby hot spring hotel!
Our 3-Night, 4-Day Xi'an Adventure: Day 1
[Xi'an Grand Tang Everbright City, The Great Qin (Gugu Daqin) Performance]
If I had been traveling alone, I would have just bought a cheaper flight, even if it meant arriving late 😇
But since I was coming with my mom,
we took a flight at a good time, even if it wasn't business class.
Though, next time I travel with my parents, I think I'll go for business class.

We departed in the morning, and the flight to Xi'an takes about 2 to 2 and a half hours!
(Pretty close, right?)
Upon arrival, we checked into this hotel, which is right in front of Xi'an's Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Grand Tang Everbright City.

For our first day in Xi'an, we decided not to overdo it
and just planned to watch a performance in the evening.
Since we're going to see the Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang in person tomorrow,
we went to watch "The Great Qin (Gugu Daqin)" performance, which tells a story related to the Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang.

Utterly grand and incredibly moving!
There were hardly any foreigners, mostly Chinese locals, but
the staff spoke excellent English, and
the performance itself is so visually stunning and awe-inspiring that even if you don't know Chinese, as long as you know the basic storyline,
you'll find yourself just saying "Wowww, this is magnificent, it's incredible!" I highly, highly recommend it to everyone.
(Video or photo shooting is prohibited during the performance, so you can only take pictures before it starts or after it ends!
Just look at the number of actors... the stage itself moves!)

Both my mom and I are the "eat anything" type, so we just grabbed whatever for dinner, but it was a bit of a miss 😭 Mom, please believe me, Chinese food is usually delicious!
However, the Chinese Tsingtao beer tasted different from what we drink in Korea... it had a strong lager feel, and it was absolutely delicious.

Grand Tang Everbright City in the morning... I'm not sure if it's the "city that never sleeps," but
I certainly know it doesn't sleep in late!

Xi'an Travel Day 2
[Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang]
Our main focus for the day was the incredible Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Army tour, and we deliberately didn't pack in any other external plans.
After our afternoon tour, we headed straight back to the hotel...
...to soak in the very waters where the legendary Yang Guifei (Consort Yang) herself is said to have bathed!
It was all about unwinding with a private hot spring and sauna session at the luxurious Angsana Xi'an Hotel.

Our guide mentioned that the Terracotta Army tends to be less crowded in the afternoon...
...compared to the mornings, which was a great tip!
While you could just grab an entrance ticket and explore the Terracotta Army on your own,
to truly unlock its secrets, a guided tour is the way to go.
Our guide could even 'pave the way' (wink, wink) to the best viewing spots...
...and provided such vibrant, living explanations of its history.
That's why we booked a private Korean-language tour of the Terracotta Army, just for us two!
It was absolutely worth it.

For your Terracotta Army tour,
I honestly can't recommend a tour in your native language enough (unless English is your absolute mother tongue). The depth of explanation makes such a difference!
And trust me, with so many people around, it can get overwhelming, so definitely opt for a small group tour.
Be careful when booking: opting for a super cheap or large group Terracotta Army tour might mean
you could end up at unwanted restaurants or be pressured into shopping excursions. I went through a lot of trouble to find a Terracotta Army tour that focused *only* on the site, even if it meant paying a bit extra – and it was absolutely worth avoiding those distractions!

After the tour, the guide simply took payment and left, no fuss at all.
This meant we had plenty of time to browse the souvenir shops at our own pace
and snap some amazing selfies! How wonderful is that?
Then, back at the hotel, it was time to truly immerse ourselves in the legendary waters associated with Yang Guifei.
Many travelers also recommend seeing the 'Song of Everlasting Sorrow' performance,
but we felt we wouldn't have enough time to fully enjoy our amazing Xi'an hot spring hotel, plus we'd already seen a show yesterday, so we skipped it this time.

Inside our room, there was this stunning Chinese-style garden,
and the hot spring water in our private bath was refreshed every day at 3 PM.
But (sadly!) they mercilessly drain the water at midnight.
Since it's right there in your room, you can hop in and out completely in the buff
and enjoy it to your heart's content! It's pure bliss!!!!
Beyond your room, the hotel's main hot spring area is also incredibly vast and inviting,
so make sure to spend plenty of time luxuriating there as well!

Xi'an Travel Day 3
[Xi'an Bell Tower: Taking It Easy and Exploring the City]
This was the day we checked into the hotel for the final leg of our Xi'an adventure – a place we were incredibly excited about!
Ah, my instincts are spot on as always! Call me the hotel master!
The hotel is absolutely, incredibly fantastic, and the service is genuinely sweet.
They provide everything from welcome food to late-night snacks, starting from breakfast.
It's super close to Xi'an city center, making it so convenient to explore. Plus, it's a hotel with a panoramic view of Xi'an's Bell Tower!

First, we headed out in the evening to see the Xi'an City Wall.
The Xi'an City Wall had a moderate crowd.
It's hard to believe this was all built so long ago...
In Korea, many palaces and city walls have disappeared or burned down, so seeing so many grand structures still standing here made me feel quite envious...
It feels like the people of Xi'an, much like the Egyptians, are sustained by tourism, with generations benefiting from their ancestors' incredible architecture...
Souvenirs at the city wall weren't particularly great,
but after coming down, I found this amazing antique-like shop!
The stamp was so pretty, and it was only 125 CNY!
I had to get it right away!
Then, we returned to our wonderful hotel,
and spent the last day of our Xi'an trip relaxing perfectly suited for my mom.

Xi'an 3-Night, 4-Day Trip: Accommodation Location Recommendations & Hotels

When considering hotel locations in Xi'an, you can generally think of three main areas.
First, there's the city center, the absolute heart of the action – around the Bell Tower, Muslim Quarter, and Xi'an City Wall.
Being a bustling city center, it has the advantage of short travel distances with plenty of restaurants, shops, and more nearby,
however, getting to the Terracotta Army takes about an hour, and traffic can be incredibly heavy during rush hour.
Then, there's the area around Xi'an's Grand Tang Dynasty Everbright City and Big Wild Goose Pagoda, which is also quite central,
though the Bell Tower area is much more downtown.
It has a park right in front and feels somewhat peaceful yet still urban, making it a great compromise.
However, this area is also quite a distance from Emperor Qinshihuang's Terracotta Army.
The third option is near Emperor Qinshihuang's Terracotta Army, in the Lintong area.
It's secluded and quiet,
with a fantastic atmosphere.
The proximity to the Terracotta Army is a huge plus, meaning you can easily head back for a quick return after battling the crowds at the site.
Angsana Xi'an Hotel is absolutely perfect for enjoying a tranquil hot spring and sauna experience,
and as a Banyan Tree group hotel, it's a renowned 5-star chain with expansive and convenient facilities.
So, how much did we spend? Duōshǎo qián (多少钱)~~~
Xi'an Travel Costs with Mom

So, you're wondering how much we actually spent on our 3-night, 4-day trip to Xi'an?
Here's the breakdown!
First, airfare was a pretty big chunk of the total cost (for two people: ~$966).
For hotels in Xi'an, we stayed at the best and most luxurious places (especially the hotels on our first and last nights offered free airport pick-up and drop-off) for all three nights near the Bell Tower, Terracotta Army, and Grand Tang Mall (Datang Everbright City).
Even though I chose hotels my mom would love, it didn't cost as much as I expected.
3 nights at 5-star luxury hotels in Xi'an: around ~$674.

The biggest expense we had once we arrived was the Korean-speaking guide for the Terracotta Army, which was around ~$150 (1,000 Chinese Yuan).
Even for China, attractions like the Terracotta Army and the City Wall have pretty steep entrance fees. For two people, entrance fees were around ~$90.
And taxis... oh my, they were such an incredible deal! We spent less than ~$37.
As for food, we had free hotel breakfast every day,
and even when we ate simple dinners nearby or dined at hotel restaurants, it only came out to around ~$60 for both of us for the entire 3-night, 4-day trip!

So, the total expenses we spent once we got there were around ~$449.
For our entire 3-night, 4-day Xi'an trip, even staying only in the best hotels
and doing a private tour of the Terracotta Army, it only came out to about ~$1,049 per person!
Typically, if you look for Xi'an package tours, they seem to range from ~$749 to ~$1,124.
But we had absolutely no hassle,
stayed only in the best hotels, and I'm quite proud that our costs were relatively low!

What was especially great about our 3-night, 4-day Xi'an trip
&
What was a bit disappointing?

The absolute best parts of our Xi'an trip were:
the "Great Qin" (You Jian Da Qin) performance, seeing the Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shi Huang, and having a private hot spring experience at the hotel!
Also, I loved finding unexpected, unique souvenirs...
And perhaps because it's a city with many tourists, it had the most English speakers I encountered during my China trip!
Even an elderly street vendor next to the Terracotta Army said "five yuan!" in English, which totally surprised me!
The only downside was that Xi'an's weather isn't as bright and sunny as Shanghai's, I guess?
So, for younger travelers looking to wear pretty outfits and stroll around, it might be a bit... challenging.
And I'm not sure if it was just the places we ate at, or if it was because I didn't try more adventurous restaurants since I was with my mom,
but the food was a bit disappointing compared to other Chinese cities ㅠ-ㅠ Where were my usual mouthwatering Chinese dishes?
If you ask if I'd go again? Absolutely, but next time, I'd love to combine it with nearby cities around Xi'an!
