Chiangmai Old Town Hotel
When planning a trip to Chiang Mai, most travelers find themselves choosing between two main areas: the historic Old City and the trendy Nimmanhemin neighborhood.
If you dig a bit deeper, you will also find popular local hubs for long-term stays (like Santitham or areas near the university) and unique boutique stays offering immersive experiences like elephant wake-up calls.
Today, we are focusing on the classic heart of the city: a cozy stay right inside Chiang Mai's Old City.

Why We Recommend Viya Lodge (Viya Lanna)
Choosing the Best Chiang Mai Neighborhood

While Nimmanhemin is highly popular for its hip cafes and modern digital nomad vibe, most first-time visitors prefer starting their journey in the Old City. It gives you that quintessential Chiang Mai feel. I also chose the Old City for my very first stay here.
Starting your trip here allows you to easily explore nearby historical sites, and once you get your bearings, you can move on to trendier spots like Nimman or quieter local residential areas like Santitham.
Checking into Viya Lodge at Night

I checked in quite late because I arrived in the late afternoon, grabbed a delicious local dinner, and spent hours wandering around the Sunday Walking Street market first. The lobby desk is tucked away on the bottom right. The property feels more like a charming private villa than a standard hotel, and it was incredibly clean and comfortable for the price.

I stayed in a Deluxe Corner Twin Room, which came with two comfortable beds and a courtyard view. Since it was dark outside, I only pulled the curtains back slightly to sneak a peek...

And this was the incredible view right outside! An ancient Buddhist stupa (chedi) stood beautifully illuminated right in front of my window.

The bathroom was clean, simple, and came with fresh towels and basic amenities. Honestly, when you are staying in the Old City, you will spend most of your day out exploring rather than staying in your room. This was more than comfortable and met all my needs perfectly.

I highly recommend this hotel's location because of its incredible proximity to the Sunday Walking Street. Getting around the narrow alleys of the Old City is super easy from here. The night market gets extremely crowded, so if I had stayed outside the Old City walls, just getting in and out would have been exhausting.
Waking Up to Old City Views

After a busy night of exploring, I opened the curtains the next morning to a warm, welcoming view of the Old City. The ancient chedi I saw last night looked equally stunning in the morning light. It already looked like it was going to be a hot day—easily reaching into the mid-90s°F—but the historic atmosphere was absolutely beautiful.
Why We Recommend Viya Lodge (Viya Lanna)

With its perfect location and clean, comfortable rooms, Viya Lodge was the perfect starting point for my Chiang Mai adventure before I moved on to Nimmanhemin and other areas.
