When you're planning a trip to Chiang Mai,
one experience many people truly want to try
is probably meeting elephants.
However, most elephant sanctuaries
are quite a distance from Chiang Mai city center,
often requiring you to set aside
half a day or even a full day for your itinerary.
1. Pang Dee Dee: An Elephant Cafe Close to the City
I, too, found the travel time a bit daunting,
but Pang Dee Dee, where I visited this time,
is only about a 20-minute drive from the city center,
making it incredibly convenient
and easy to visit! :)
Located on the east side relative to the Old Town,
if you're planning your Chiang Mai trip
with a focus on the eastern areas,
the accessibility will be even better for you.

2. Brand New, Sparkling Clean Facilities
Pang Dee Dee opened last year,
making it a relatively new cafe with spotless facilities.
It's well-maintained overall,
and beautifully decorated throughout,
making it perfect for photos!
The basic cafe admission fee is
an affordable 150 Baht,
so if you want to see elephants up close, even for a short while,
but your travel itinerary is tight and you don't have time for a distant excursion,
this might be a great place to visit.
The admission fee also includes elephant food,
which is great for taking pictures!
3. Diverse Programs Available
I chose the basic cafe program,
which allowed me to feed the elephants, take photos,
and enjoy drinks at the cafe!
They also offer various programs, such as feeding elephants + making elephant vitamin balls,
and even splashing in the water + mud spa experiences with the elephants,
so you can choose the program that suits you best.
You can simply enjoy feeding them
and taking photos,
or, if you want to create even more special memories,
they offer several programs that include making vitamin balls or water activities.
If you're a family traveling with children,
you might want to explore the broader range of choices.
When you pay the elephant cafe admission fee of 150 Baht,
you'll receive a paper ticket like this!
You can then take this paper ticket inside the cafe
and exchange it for elephant food.
4. Traditional Costume Experience
Among the various programs offered,
there was a traditional costume experience.
When we visited, they were running a discount coupon lottery
promotion!
So, while the traditional costume experience was originally 900 Baht,
I drew a 70% discount coupon,
allowing me to enjoy it for a reasonable 270 Baht!
But it seems I was the 'unluckiest' among my companions,
as some friends even drew 'Free' or 90% off coupons! ㅋㅋㅋ
Most people seemed to get great coupons, so I wondered
if they were just giving them away for free??
But then I saw there were also 20% off or 'no prize' coupons.
Even though 70% was the lowest discount among my group,
I was still super satisfied to get anything at all!!
The traditional costume experience was more
thoughtful than I expected! They really put effort into helping us with the outfits!
Once you pick out your desired outfit and put it on,
they tidy up your clothes,
and even give you a simple hair styling and accessories.
They provide a full set of styling,
so my friends and I were all super satisfied ❤️
Most importantly, the helper staff who assisted us
were incredibly kind...★
Before going to see the elephants,
I slurped down a separately ordered iced americano!
5. Going to See the Elephants
✔️No entering the elephant enclosure
✔️No camera flash
✔️No excessively loud noises
Before heading to see the elephants,
make sure to read the cautionary notes!
Finally, just before meeting the elephants!
There are pretty photo zones everywhere,
so snap as many photos as you like :)

When you go towards the front of the elephant enclosure,
the mahout (elephant handler) interacts with the elephant
and helps guests take photos!
Oh, and also, the elephants here
have lived with their mahouts since they were young,
interacting and growing together.
Perhaps that's why the elephants and mahouts
looked so good together, naturally interacting,
I had a slight concern that it might be elephant labor exploitation (?),
which I worried about a little before going,
but instead, I could feel an atmosphere where the mahouts and elephants
cared for each other.
6. Elephant Feeding Experience
The coupon we received when paying the admission fee
can be exchanged for elephant food!
My friend and I exchanged our coupons for a food basket and milk, respectively,
and fed the elephants :)

We did the traditional costume experience and saw the elephants up close,
and if you go to Chiang Mai, I think seeing elephants
is an absolute must :)
The biggest advantage of Pang Dee Dee, where I went,
was its accessibility from the city center.
