For years, swapping out physical SIM cards was just part of the international travel routine. But then, like a game-changer, the eSIM arrived and completely revolutionized how we stay connected abroad.
Beyond the sheer inconvenience of physically changing a tiny chip, there's always that nagging fear of losing your original SIM card while traveling. Imagine the headache of returning home only to find your primary SIM gone! It's a hassle you definitely want to avoid.
I once had a terrifying moment on a flight where my SIM card popped out while I was trying to swap it, and I spent what felt like an eternity searching for it in the cramped cabin. Thanks to the sheer convenience of eSIMs, I've been a loyal user ever since. Following my last trip to Ho Chi Minh City, I'm excited to share my experience using an eSIM in Hanoi, Vietnam, for 2026.
And don't worry, whether you're heading to Nha Trang, Da Nang, or Phu Quoc, a Vietnam eSIM works seamlessly across the entire country.
Vietnam boasts fast internet speeds and affordable rates, so you *could* technically buy a physical SIM at the airport upon arrival. However, I often use fast-track and pickup services these days, and stopping to buy and set up a physical SIM can be a hassle. Since eSIMs require no physical swapping and are incredibly convenient, I almost exclusively use them now and highly recommend them to everyone traveling to Vietnam.
During my previous trip to Ho Chi Minh City, my eSIM even picked up a 5G signal in certain areas, particularly around:

It's incredibly simple!
You'll typically choose between one of Vietnam's leading mobile carriers, such as Viettel or Vinaphone. Viettel holds the largest market share, while Vinaphone is usually slightly more affordable.
After selecting your destination country, the amount of data you need, and the duration of your trip, your part in the US is essentially done. For Vietnam, you'll often see options like 'standard' or 'local high-speed network'; the standard option usually refers to a roaming network.
Once purchased, you'll receive a voucher with a QR code. Simply download it or take a screenshot, and you're all set.
Upon landing and exiting the plane, connect to Wi-Fi. (While I used to do this upon arrival, these days I prefer to set it up before I even leave home. I install the eSIM beforehand and simply activate it once I land.)
Navigate to: Settings >> SIM Manager >> Add eSIM >> Scan QR Code. Follow the on-screen prompts, as shown below:
This will activate your camera to scan the QR code. Just tap the gallery icon in the bottom right corner, select the screenshot you took earlier, and your Vietnam travel eSIM setup is complete!
Once added, you'll see your new eSIM listed. You can then turn off your original SIM, disable Wi-Fi, and confirm that your LTE signal is active. While you can keep your original SIM active, it drains battery faster, so it's best to only switch it on when absolutely necessary.

Following my successful experience in Ho Chi Minh City, I also used a Vietnam eSIM on my recent trip to Hanoi, and it worked flawlessly with excellent speeds. It even performed great during my Halong Bay tour. Remember, a Vietnam eSIM isn't city-specific; it covers the entire country, so you can use it in other fantastic destinations like Nha Trang, Da Nang, or Phu Quoc too.

During our previous use of the Ho Chi Minh eSIM, 5G reception was observed in the Bến Nghé ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. The Vietnam eSIM is usable not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also throughout Vietnam, including Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Nha Trang, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc.
For Vietnam eSIM, you can choose between Viettel or Vinaphone carriers. Viettel is the number one carrier in terms of market share, while Vinaphone is slightly more affordable than Viettel.
After arriving at your destination, connect to Wi-Fi, then go to Settings, select SIM Manager, Add eSIM, and then Scan QR code. The installation will be completed by selecting and scanning the screenshot of the QR code voucher you received at the time of purchase from your gallery.
