Booking Your Halong Bay Tour in 2026: Navigating the 'Sinh Tourist' Scam

Halong Bay, Vietnam, a UNESCO-designated Natural Heritage site, was definitely on my must-see list. Since I was already in the area, I decided it was the perfect time to explore it.

Who knows when I'd next be in Hanoi, Vietnam? So, since I was here, I figured it was now or never to visit this incredible UNESCO World Heritage site and slotted it into my itinerary.

I initially planned to just book through a local travel agency, so I didn't arrange anything specific from back home. (I briefly considered a 2-day, 1-night Halong Bay cruise, but ultimately decided on a day trip.)

My quick research into Halong Bay tours in Vietnam revealed a common challenge: distinguishing between the 'fake' Sinh Tourist agencies and the 'real' ones. It seemed crucial to find the genuine article.

However, some travelers mentioned there wasn't a huge difference, with some even having good experiences with the 'fake' agencies. Of course, others shared horror stories of getting ripped off by them.

Armed with this knowledge, I decided it was best to avoid the potential pitfalls and sought out the 'real' Sinh Tourist office.

There were two known locations. I headed to the one that seemed most frequently mentioned in blog posts, only to find it firmly closed.

Surrounded by countless other 'Sinh Tourist' lookalikes, I decided to try my luck at the second official branch.

I made my way to the other location, only to discover it was also closed! Hilariously, right next door, a (fake) Sinh Tourist office was wide open.

If I hadn't double-checked the address, I would have easily walked straight in, assuming it was the real deal. The addresses were distinct, even if they were practically neighbors.

With no other options, I reluctantly stepped into the 'fake' Sinh Tourist office. The price felt quite steep. They quoted me 1,450,000 VND for a Halong Bay day tour, then quickly offered a 'special' price of 1,000,000 VND. That's about ~$58 reduced to ~$40.

I really wanted to compare prices with other agencies, but that would mean trekking all the way back to the previous locations (which were a considerable walk away).

I was already tired, and honestly, I figured how much difference could there really be? So, I just walked back in.

At that point, I knew I'd already lost any leverage at the negotiation table. Walking out and then back in certainly didn't help my case!

Since I was also booking a bus to Sapa with them, I tried to haggle a bit more, but they insisted it was already a 'special' price and wouldn't budge.

The Halong Bay tour included a lunch I had absolutely no expectations for, an island tour (with options for swimming or trekking), a cave tour, kayaking (or a bamboo boat ride), and something called a 'sunset party with wine.' The 'sunset party' was a new one for me, as I hadn't seen it mentioned in other reviews. (Frankly, I had zero expectations for it – a sunset party for that price just didn't add up!)
