The day of our Halong Bay adventure finally arrived! Our tour package promised hotel pickup, and true to their word, a guide met us right at our hotel entrance. Don't expect a bus to pull up directly; instead, a friendly guide will greet you and escort you to the tour bus, usually parked nearby.
Our guide arrived just after 8:00 AM. After picking up more travelers for about an hour and a half, we were officially on our way to Vietnam's magnificent Halong Bay!

Upon arrival, we boarded our Halong Bay cruise, and the tour officially began. This is the awe-inspiring landscape that greeted us in Vietnam's Halong Bay, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
Up close, the sheer scale of the limestone karsts is truly impressive.
While the sky, sea, and islands are undeniably beautiful, after seeing them for hours on end during the Halong Bay tour, the initial excitement does tend to wane a bit!
Lunch was served almost immediately after we boarded the cruise. My only regret? I hadn't yet decided to document this trip for a blog post! So, I snapped one quick photo before the food was fully laid out, and then promptly got lost in the deliciousness. Unfortunately, I have no photos of the main courses that followed!
This picture only shows the appetizers. I believe there was a meat dish and other courses served afterward. My friend, however, wasn't too impressed, feeling there wasn't a substantial main dish and just a lot of "odds and ends."
Personally, I went in with zero expectations and wasn't particularly hungry, so I found the meal to be quite decent, even better than I anticipated.
After lunch and a short rest, we arrived at an unnamed island. Here, visitors have the choice of swimming or trekking. I wasn't in the mood for a swim, so trekking was the obvious choice for me.
We were given some free time, allowing those who wanted to hike to hit the trails and those who preferred a dip to enjoy the water.
The trek began, and while I don't regret my choice, it turned out to be quite a climb! By the time we reached the summit, I was drenched in sweat.
This is the view from the top. It's not an "OMG" kind of view, so choosing to swim instead would also be a great option. If you hustle, you could probably even manage to do both!

After finishing the trek and heading back down, we still had over 30 minutes left of free time. So, with no swimsuit, I just jumped into the ocean in my clothes. (Looking back, it probably wasn't the best idea since I didn't have a change of clothes or swimsuit.)
There are shower facilities available, but they cost ~$7 to use. You only get water; no shampoo or body wash is provided, so come prepared!
Next up was kayaking (or a bamboo boat ride)! The bamboo boat involves several people sitting in a larger boat while a local oarsman navigates for you. It's a relaxed way to simply sit back and enjoy the scenery. I'd read some posts recommending the bamboo boat over kayaking, citing how tiring kayaking can be.
However, my friend was really keen on kayaking, so that's what we chose.
My verdict? Kayaking is SO much more fun! While I haven't tried the bamboo boat for comparison, the free time allotted is quite generous. I imagine just passively sitting in a slow-moving boat for that long might get a little boring. With kayaking, even though it's a workout, you can control your speed and explore wherever you want.
We paddled diligently, passing through a cave-like opening, which led us to a fantastic spot perfect for kayaking.
This area can get a bit congested, and there are some low ceilings, so be careful not to go too fast or you might bump your head!
Once you pass through that narrow opening, you emerge into this wide-open, yet completely enclosed, lagoon. It feels like a secret world, which probably explains why the guides let everyone explore so freely!
Even though it's surrounded by towering karsts, this area is surprisingly, even remarkably, large.
Oh, a quick tip for kayaking: if you want to change direction, just paddle on one side – the opposite side to where you want to turn. Don't paddle on both sides at once!
I'm sharing this because we encountered a group of Vietnamese travelers who were completely adrift in a corner, unable to steer their kayak. When we approached, they frantically asked us for help!

Kayaking was genuinely a lot of fun, though I admit, if you get too enthusiastic with your paddling, it can be quite a workout!
Our next stop was a cave exploration.
This was another impressive cave, but having explored similar ones in places like Jeju Island and other destinations I can't quite recall, it didn't blow me away. Plus, by this point, I was already feeling pretty worn out.
My friend, however, had never been in a cave like this before and was absolutely fascinated, leaving very satisfied.
Apparently, the original itinerary for the Halong Bay tour typically goes: Cave → Kayak/Bamboo Boat → Island (Trekking/Swimming). But on our day, due to the sheer number of people, they reversed the order!
From a stamina perspective, the original sequence would have been much better. By the end, I was completely exhausted!

Oh, and about the "sunset party"... they do offer something akin to wine. They pour you a single, tiny glass – essentially just a sip – and that's it! Don't expect a whole bottle or an elaborate celebration.
You can purchase drinks, water, and beer on board the Halong Bay cruise. There's usually a cooler packed with options. We saw a cafe menu but couldn't find anywhere that looked like a proper cafe, so we just ignored it. However, I later heard that you can indeed order from it, and some people did!
My conclusion on a Vietnam Halong Bay day tour: A day trip is certainly enough to experience the highlights. You probably don't *need* to stay overnight on a cruise. That said, a day trip is quite exhausting by the end! So, if I ever get the chance to visit again, I might actually opt for an overnight cruise, simply because I've already done the day trip and would love to try something different.
