When you're exploring Osaka, there's one spot you simply can't miss, and that's the iconic Umeda Sky Building, home to the Floating Garden Observatory.
It's incredibly famous for a reason, offering some of the most spectacular views of the city.
My very first trip to Japan, way back in 2019, was to Osaka, and I remember stumbling upon this place with a friend, completely unaware of what a gem it was.
Back then, I wasn't much of a photographer, but I still snapped a few pictures. Looking back now, the difference between those early attempts and my travel blogger photos is pretty hilarious!
The photo on the left is from my 2019 visit, and the one on the right is from my most recent trip. The composition might be slightly different, but it's definitely the same stunning view!
It just goes to show, there's a clear difference between photos taken before and after I started my travel blog!
Anyway, I always book my tickets in advance, and this time I used KKday. You just exchange your voucher for a physical ticket when you arrive.

The building is conveniently located and easily walkable from Osaka Station. Once you get close, just follow the directional arrows that say "Observatory" or "空中庭園" (Kuchu Teien).

With tickets in hand, let's head up!
When I visited, it wasn't too crowded, so I managed to snap a picture of the escalator entrance without anyone in it – a rare sight!
This is it! Those long, illuminated escalators lead you up. First, you'll reach an indoor observation floor, and from there, another ascent takes you to the true outdoor Sky Garden.
Once you step out, prepare for the incredible panoramic views! Even with some construction visible on the left, it somehow blends seamlessly into the urban landscape.
The views here offer a different kind of charm compared to the Harukas 300 Observatory. While both are beautiful, I actually think my photos turned out better here! Comparing them again for this post, Harukas 300 feels like you're looking down from an even greater height, whereas the Floating Garden Observatory gives you a closer, more intimate perspective of the surrounding skyscrapers.
There's also a Sky Cafe where you can grab a quick bite or enjoy a drink (they have a fantastic selection of international beers!).
However, snagging a window seat can be a challenge – even when it wasn't overly crowded, those spots were almost all taken! This also makes taking photos from that side a bit tricky since there aren't many open spaces. If you see a vacant spot, grab it quick!
Oh, one crucial tip! You can use the Osaka Amazing Pass for admission to the Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden, but there's a catch: you need to visit early.
The pass is only valid until 6:00 PM (18:00). Many travelers rely on the Osaka Amazing Pass to save on admission fees, so if you want to use it here, make sure you plan an early visit. However, if you're aiming for the incredible night view, a 6:00 PM cutoff means you'll miss it! So, you'll need to decide what's more important for your trip: saving money on admission or experiencing the stunning Osaka nightscape.
I actually had an Osaka Amazing Pass myself, but because I wanted to see the night view, I ended up booking my ticket separately. Who knew there were such restrictions!
