If you are heading to Osaka, chances are high that
Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is at the top of your itinerary.
With its incredible immersive zones and world-class rides,
it is undoubtedly one of the most popular theme parks globally.
It is almost a rite of passage for anyone visiting the city.
However, the ticketing system can be incredibly confusing,
and the infamous multi-hour wait times
can easily intimidate first-time visitors.
Today, I am going to break down exactly how to navigate
the different ticket types, and share my honest review
of using the USJ Express Pass!
Let us start with the most confusing part:
Understanding USJ's Ticket Types.
📌 Broadly speaking, tickets are divided into five categories: Studio Pass (Entry Ticket), Standby Entry Ticket,
Area Timed Entry Ticket, Lottery Ticket, and Express Pass.
I have created a simple table below
to explain the purpose of each ticket type.
Ticket Type | Purpose / Description |
Studio Pass (Entry Ticket) | The mandatory base ticket required to enter the park. |
Express Pass | An optional premium add-on that drastically reduces wait times for specific rides. |
Area Timed Entry Ticket | Guarantees entry to highly popular zones at a specific time. Currently required for Super Nintendo World, and can be secured in advance. |
Standby Entry Ticket | A free timed entry ticket available via the USJ app on the day of your visit (subject to availability). |
Lottery Ticket | Issued only when Standby Entry Tickets run out. Entry is based on a random lottery system. |
To summarize, the absolute non-negotiable requirement is the ▶️ 'Studio Pass',
and the ticket that lets you skip the lines is the ▶️ 'Express Pass'.
The other three (Area Timed, Standby, and Lottery) are strictly
for crowd control in specific areas, primarily Super Nintendo World.
During extreme off-peak seasons, they might not enforce
timed entry for Nintendo World, but that is rare.

Express Pass that includes Nintendo World rides,
your Area Timed Entry Ticket is automatically included!

❗️ I have one crucial piece of advice
for anyone buying an Express Pass.
Express Passes do not let you randomly pick rides on the spot.
Instead, you purchase a specific package
that includes 4 to 8 pre-determined rides.
Therefore, you MUST check the ride list to ensure it includes
'Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge' and 'Mine-Cart Madness' (Donkey Kong)
in Super Nintendo World!
(These two attractions consistently have the longest lines in the entire park.)
As I mentioned earlier,
the Studio Pass is mandatory, while the Express Pass
is technically optional.
✅ However, if you have limited stamina or limited time,
✅ and especially if you are traveling with children,
I consider the Express Pass practically mandatory, despite the cost.
Let me explain exactly why by sharing
my personal experience using the Express Pass.
You have probably heard horror stories of people
lining up at the USJ gates at 6:00 AM
just to sprint to Super Nintendo World.
Given how long the lines get, I understand the strategy,
but honestly, just thinking about waking up that early
on a vacation makes me exhausted.
Because we had the Express Pass,
we leisurely strolled up to the gates around 10:00 AM.
By that time, there was absolutely no wait to enter the park.
We opted for the Express Pass 7.
This means our ride times for 7 major attractions
were all pre-scheduled for us.
Following our itinerary, our first stop was
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Using the pass is wonderfully simple.
You just show up at the ride entrance at your designated time,
scan your QR code as shown in the picture, and you are in.
In the left photo, you can see the regular standby line
for the Harry Potter ride. The posted wait time was over 30 minutes.
However, thanks to our Express Pass,
we bypassed that entirely and used the dedicated priority lane on the right.
We were strapped into the ride in about 5 minutes!
Next up was the absolute highlight of USJ:
Super Nintendo World.
While most guests were scrambling for Standby Entry Tickets on the app,
our Express Pass had our Area Timed Entry built right in,
allowing us to walk straight through the famous green pipe.
Our first ride here was Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge.
The standby wait time was a staggering 90 minutes.
While massive crowds snaked through the regular queue on the right,
we breezed past them through the Express lane on the left.
Our final major attraction was Mine-Cart Madness in the Donkey Kong area.
The lines for this ride were hovering between
two and a half to three hours all day long.
Once again, we flashed our Express Passes,
entered the priority queue,
and were on the ride in about 20 minutes.
Overall, the pass cut down our total wait times
by roughly 80 to 90%.
We managed to conquer the best of USJ in just half a day!
To wrap things up, let's do a quick recap of
the ticket types and my Express Pass verdict.
To enter Universal Studios Japan,
you must purchase a Studio Pass in advance.
The Express Pass is an optional add-on.
However, because the wait times for rides in Super Nintendo World
and the Harry Potter area are notoriously brutal,
if you value your time or are traveling with kids,
the Express Pass is practically essential.
Just remember, when you are booking, double-check that

are specifically listed on your Express Pass package.

By using Express Pass 7, the author reduced the wait time for the Harry Potter attraction from over 30 minutes to 5 minutes, entered Mario Kart immediately from a 90-minute wait, and reduced the wait for Donkey Kong from 2.5-3 hours to approximately 20 minutes. It is said that the overall attraction wait times were cut by 80-90%, allowing them to conquer Universal Studios Japan in half a day.
