Sanjeonggol: Suncheon's Spicy Seafood Pork Bone Stew
After enjoying the cherry blossoms in Suncheon, we found Sanjeonggol Haejangguk, a local gem near City Hall serving an incredibly spicy and delicious seafood pork bone stew.

After soaking in the beautiful cherry blossoms along Suncheon Dongcheon, we stumbled upon Sanjeonggol Haejangguk, a fantastic local eatery located conveniently close to Suncheon City Hall.

One of my go-to tips for finding delicious local restaurants in an unfamiliar area is to check out the spots near government offices. They often cater to a local crowd with consistently good food.
That's exactly how we found Sanjeonggol, by searching for "restaurants near Suncheon City Hall."

The place definitely has that classic, time-honored feel of an old-school establishment. It might not be the fanciest or most modern, but it certainly exudes the charm of a long-standing local favorite.
Spicy Seafood Pork Bone Stew (Haemul Deungppyeojjim)

Looks like a regular seafood stew, doesn't it?

While it has all the vibrant colors and fresh seafood of a classic Korean seafood stew, this dish is actually a Haemul Deungppyeojjim – a delicious pork bone stew infused with seafood!

I asked everyone to wait a moment so I could snap a few photos, but it seems they couldn't resist digging in!

For my second child, who isn't a fan of spicy food, we also ordered a separate bowl of Dwaeji Ppyeohaejangguk (Pork Bone Hangover Soup).

My eldest was happily picking out the pork bones from the seafood stew. It was truly a feast!

The stew was packed with plenty of fresh seafood. I polished off all these clam shells myself – it had that perfect "deliciously spicy" kick. It was a bit too spicy for the kids, though.

Because of its proximity to Suncheon City Hall, the area is bustling with a variety of great restaurants. We spotted a fantastic spot specializing in Jjukkumi (webfoot octopus), which is currently in season.

We also saw Nagwon Hoegwan, famous for its succulent cockle set meals.

Right nearby, there was even a restaurant offering traditional Korean full-course meals (Hanjeongsik).
My Takeaway
The old adage about finding great restaurants near government offices certainly proved true here in Suncheon.
While Sanjeonggol Haejangguk might not be the best choice for families with young children due to its spicy offerings, it's an absolute must-try for adults who appreciate a good kick in their cuisine.
And if Sanjeonggol isn't quite what you're looking for, the surrounding area is a treasure trove of other delicious Suncheon dining options.
